Quote:
Beetlejuice is a 1988 American dark comedy film directed by Tim Burton, produced by The Geffen Film Company and distributed by Warner Bros.

The plot revolves around a recently deceased young couple who become ghosts haunting their former home and an obnoxious, devious "bio-exorcist" named Betelgeuse from the underworld who tries to scare away the new inhabitants permanently.

Beetlejuice stars Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Jones, Sylvia Sidney, and Michael Keaton as the titular Betelgeuse (the film's title being a phonetic spelling of the character's name).

After the success of Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Burton was sent several scripts and became disheartened by their lack of imagination and originality. When he was sent Michael McDowell's original script for Beetlejuice, Burton agreed to direct, although Larry Wilson and Warren Skaaren were hired to rewrite it.

Beetlejuice was both a financial and critical success, grossing $73.33 million from a budget of $13 million. The film spawned an animated television series that Burton produced, and the unproduced Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian sequel.

One of the best still-standing comedies ever. The effects are dated now, but the story is still fantastic. Beetlejuice is one of the greatest characters invented, helped immensively by Michael Keaton's wonderful performance. Alec Baldwin and Gena Davis do a nice job as well. This movie's very nostalgic for me.

Height of Keatons popularity before Batman, He was a scene stealer and was only in 19 minutes of the film. Great time at the movies for great characterization, look at death, and it is shot very well.

Great use of Harry Belafonte songs, BTW.

Enjoyable, odd, albeit dated, Beetlejuice is still one of my favorite comedies from the 80's.

A perfect, wildly imaginative little gem of a comedy. One of my favorite movies. Tim Burton never topped this.

THat scene when they're all dancing around the dinnnig room table was great. Tame for today's standards, but it was probably a riot when it first came out. I'm surprised it hasn't received the dreadful make-over treatment that most movies like this get. Oh well, give it time...

Me too! One of the greatest themes of all-time, created by the theme-master himself, Danny Elfman!

Even the music besides the main theme is great, like the Deezes (?) theme.

Let me continue the lovefest. This is Tim Burton at his best. Beetlejuice is not my favorite Tim Burton film, but it certainly comes close. Burton's weirdness is at its great display in this one and you can see his obsession with the dead and the morbid in this one that he contnued in Nightmare before Christmas and Corpse Bride. I don't think a single movie displays Burton's disctingt style as well as this one. The acting is right on the spot. Geena Davis and the pre-fat Alec Baldwin make a great couple here and the young Winona Ryder is a blast. But it is Michael Keaton who truly stands out in the best role of his career (above Batman, yes). He created such a memorable and fun character. People have mentioned the score here and I can't help, but agree. The score is great. The movie is extremely rewatchable, it is funny, enthralling, very interesting, full of great and innovative ideas and dark humor. This is how you make milestone fun movies!

Burton's second best, only behind Edward Scissorhands.

Love it. And this is the real Michael Keaton. He is terrific in this, along with a great supporting cast.

PEACE, Mike.

Not Burton's best, but certainly better than almost everything he's made since, oh, Ed Wood. Michael Keaton far and away steals the show. I think this movie is the best indication of why he should not have played Batman. The comedy is both slapstick and witty in nature, and it's occasionally just as dark as the rest of the film. Some of the sight gags are as hilarious as they are imaginative, and the light-hearted dark tone works very well. My biggest complaints would be Winona Ryder, who was fairly bland, and not enough Beetlejuice, but other than that, it's as good a dark fantasy comedy as you can get.

Hehe, loved it. One of my favorite movies growing up, and still is. I love everything about the film, and think the out-dated effects are actually a good thing. You don't have to have flashy effects and mega budgets to create a great film. The score is awesome, just like every other Burton/Elfman collaboration. Can't wait for Sweeney Tood, yes, Elfman isn't doing the score for this one, but a musical by Burton seems too good to be true, for me. I became a fan of Geena Davis because of this film also, she favors my aunt ALOT! I think this is actually the first film I watched by Burton also.

Catherine O'Hara never gets any love. She was pretty awsome as Delia here.

Old thread, but I just found it and the film is finally being given a decent DVD treatment coming soon, so I just wanna say this is one of my favorite movies I have ever seen.

My favorite Tim Burton-directed picture as well. Beetlejuice is a riot.

Otho: What happened to these people?
Delia: They died. Oh, look, an indoor outhouse.

[in the waiting room of the afterlife]
Barbara: Adam, is this what happens when you die?
Receptionist: This is what happens when you die, that is what happens when he dies, and that is what happens when they die. It's all very personal. And I'll tell you something; if I knew then what I know now,
[shows her slit wrists]
Receptionist: I wouldn't have had my little accident.

Delia: [talking to a workman] If you tell me what you do I'll tell you why my husband will fire you.

Bernard: Delia, you are a flake. You have always been a flake. If you insist on frightening people, do it with your sculpture.

Dumb Football Player: [the football players have re-entered Juno's office] Coach?
Juno: What?
Dumb Football Player: [looking disturbed] I don't think we survived that crash.
Juno: [sarcastically] How did you guess?

Delia: This is my art, and it is dangerous! Do you think I want to die like this?

And the best scene includes this song:

Day-o, day-ay-ay-o
Daylight come and he wan' go home
Day, he say day, he say day, he say day, he say day, he say day-ay-ay-o
Daylight come and he wan' go home

Work all night on a drink a'rum
(Daylight come and he wan' go home)
Stack banana till morning come
(Daylight come and he wan' go home)

Come, Mr. Tally Mon, tally me banana
(Daylight come and he wan' go home)
Come, Mr. Tally Mon, tally me banana
(Daylight come and he wan' go home)

It's six foot, seven foot, eight foot, BUNCH!
(Daylight come and he wan' go home)
Six foot, seven foot, eight foot, BUNCH!
(Daylight come and he wan' go home)

Day, he say day-ay-ay-o
(daylight come and he wa'n go home)
Day, he say day, he say day, he say day, he say day, he say day

(Daylight come and he wan' go home)

A beautiful bunch a'ripe banana
(daylight come and he wan' go home)
Hide thee Deadly black tarantula
(Daylight come and he wan' go home)

It's six foot, seven foot, eight foot, BUNCH!
(Daylight come and he wan' go home)
Six foot, seven foot, eight foot, BUNCH!
(Daylight come and he wan' go home)

Oh, my grade is 8/10 (A-) :D

Eh, this was all over the place and not in a good way.

There was so little internal logic to this thing and it got on my nerves, with random things happening for seemingly no reason other than "the filmmakers wanted to." The characters themselves all behaved in such forced, scripted ways and none of them--aside from Beetlejuice, anyway--really had any sense of self. Sure, the visuals were entertaining enough in and of themselves for a bit but after a while of it being just about the weirdness with the people involved being so uninteresting I became bored with it. Weirdness for weirdness sake doesn't really work for me.

The actors were all competent enough but no one really stood out as anything special, including Keaton. As for the "comedy"...well, what comedy? I was unclear on what exactly was supposed to be funny most of the time. The dinner scene was fun and I remember being amused a few other times throughout but mostly I thought they were just trying too hard to be different and bizarre. It was all very forced and didn't work for me.

I'm not really a fan of Tim Burton's work I guess as nothing he's done has ever really amazed me. There are a number of his films that I always think could be intriguing but he's never able to deliver. There are always too many weak links and holes in his films for me.

Anyway, I'd say Beetlejuice would be a C. Maybe C+.

I don't see how it is "Burton being Burton," however.

The statement definitely seems odd to our modern ears, as Beetlejuice is a not a tired update of lame material, nor does it contain a major role for his female life partner. In addition, Beetlejuice is not terrible.
