 Re: Jean-Luc Godard
breathless because it's accessible. pierrot because it's the most accessible of his great period.
expect to be completely lost the first couple of times you see his mid/late 60's films.

 Re: Jean-Luc Godard
well, I really shouldn't be talking, because I've only seen four of his films. three of which make my favorites list, which ostensibly lends me some authority.
I have a hunch Godard is not the filmmaker for KJ.

 Re: Jean-Luc Godard
what did you think about Les Caribiniers? I've heard it's rough/works better as an experiment than a film.

and it seems you have sadly missed out on Godard's plastic decorations so far. go for a color film next.

 Re: Jean-Luc Godard
Weekend may have the best sex scene ever, that doesn't show an inch of flesh below the character's face. That endless monologue, holy cow!
The other Godard I've seen is Alphaville, which was delirious fun. Oh yeah, and I guess there's that scene in I'm Not There with Blanchett as Dylan and Michelle Williams (?) as Edie Sedgwick. That scene sure as hell felt like a tribute to Godard.

 Re: Jean-Luc Godard
I think I'd rather respond to the Magnus post:
see 2 or 3 things I know about her! actually, you might hate that one.
so I think I'll re-direct this post to kypade:
see 2 or 3 things I know about her! even though I know this is basically impossible.

 Re: Jean-Luc Godard
It made me laugh. I am neither endorsing nor criticizing the viewpoint.
Actually, I'm currently reading Conversations With Wilder and he's hating on Godard too. [It's a great book, BTW, and Crowe's work crafting it and recalling his tense encounters with the man has earned him a lifetime of goodwill in my eyes, Elizabethtown be damned.]

 Re: Jean-Luc Godard
Magnus wrote: So-called great directors hate on other so-called great directors/works
Wells hated on Bergman (and vice versa). It's just how it is. Bergman hated on many directors... he hated on Hitchcock, he hated on Antonioni, he hated on Godard (and Raoul Coutard), he hated on Welles, he hated on and on and... too many names to fill this list... Strangely he didn't hate on Tarkovsky (who's major influence seemed to be Antonioni). Godard was probably the most hated filmmaker but also one of the most sincere and one of the most alone (from the beginning of his career till now). He never tried to mystify his movies or look back on his work with sentiments ...and yes, there were also movies and filmmakers that he was extremly passionate about. It's weird how other filmmakes try to brand him as self complacent or self-indulgent like it's something negative : everyone of them have made movies that could have been criticised with exactly the same words. Werner Herzog's (and a lot of other people's) main point of criticism is/was that he "makes movies for the critics" - which is bullshit: he just appreciates cinemagoers as people with critical opinions (at least some of them) while the other ones could watch something else, ...he didn't mind.
