Okay. As promised I start with 50 movies which didn't make it into my Top 100, but have been into consideration. The ranking of those fifty is secondary as I swapped them back and forth a lot. I'll post them in one piece, so it doesn't slow down the whole process of the Top 100

And here we go...

#100
The Dish
(AUS 2000)
Image

Who made it?
Rob Sitch

Who's in it?
Sam Neill, Patrick Warburton and a bunch of unknown australian actors

What's it about?
It's a comedy based on a true story about a remote Australian antenna, that played an important part in the broadcast of the first landing on the moon.

Why is it any good?
It has one of the most inspired bunches of quirky characters, a witty story and it is one of the most original takes on one of the greatest events in the history of mankind you'll ever see

excellent picks!

Picnic at Hanging Rock
(AUS 1975)
Image

Who made it?
Peter Weir

Who's in it?
Helen Morse, Rachel Roberts and a bunch of unknown australian actors

What's it about?
Based on a novel by Joan Lindsay and til today not known whether based on a true story or not, it is a mystery story about a bunch of School Girls who set out to picnic at Hanging Rock. When they return the same evening, three school girls and a teacher are missing

Why is it any good?
It is a confusing mystery drama, with haunting images and an equally haunting use of music and noises. This is a very strange movie and it probably divides the audience in two parts, one hates it passionately, the other loves it passionately. As you can see, I am part of the latter group.

Toy Story 1+2
(USA 1995/1999)
Image

Who made it?
John Lasseter

Who's in it?
The Voices of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen

What's it about?
It is the first computer-animated franchise and follows the adventures of toy cowboy Woody and his first enemy, then friend toy space ranger Buzz Lightyear.

Why is it any good?
Although the computer-animated movies have been in its infancy then and movies like Finding Nemo are far better in terms of technical perfection, these two movies are still Pixar's pride. Two highly original and smart stories with heart and lots of laughs

Queen Margot
(F 1994)
Image

Who made it?
Patrice Chéreau

Who's in it?
Isabell Adjani, Daniel Auteuil, Jean-Hugues Anglade

What's it about?
It is a costume drama which chronicles the Massacre of St. Bartholomew from August 24, 1572 - a key date in the religious war. Central characters are the Catholic Queen Margot and her Protestant husband Henri

Why is it any good?
It's a rousing epic with impressive looks, fantastic actors and tremendous swordfighting. It finds the perfect balance between talky and action elements.

Jaws
(USA 1975)
Image

Who made it?
Steven Spielberg

Who's in it?
Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Shaw and Bruce

What's it about?
Lots of swimmers getting eaten by a shark

Why is it any good?
This is the movie that defined the term blockbuster. The young Steven Spielberg proves why he is known as one of the masters of suspense. It pushes you in your seat and doesn't let you exhale til the credits. And it features one of the most memorable soundtrack themes of all time

Collateral
(USA 2004)
Image

Who made it?
Michael Mann

Who's in it?
Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett-Smith

What's it about?
A taxi driver is forced to drive a professional killer to his job-sites for the nights

Why is it any good?
Two words: Jamie Foxx. Everyone talks about Ray, but he equally shines in this one. Under the incredible direction by Michael Mann he easily out-acts Tom Cruise and gives the viewer the chance to identify with him. No matter that the ending is a bit of a letdown, this movie is the rare combination of chamber play and thriller. And the scene where Foxx gives Jada Pinkett-Smith a ride is one of the most romantic of recent years

Heat
(USA 1995)
Image

Who made it?
Michael Mann

Who's in it?
Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore, Natalie Portman, etc. In other words: more stars than you can imagine

What's it about?
It's a thriller about bank-robbery, but that is secondary. It is the movie where Pacino and DeNiro share the screen for the first time

Why is it any good?
Dude, didn't you read? It is Pacino AND DeNiro. For the first and only time. Not enough for you? Well how about some of the most amazing shoot-outs you'll ever see?

#93
The Bridge on the River Kwai
(UK 1957)
Image

Who made it?
David Lean

Who's in it?
Alec Guinness, William Holden

What's it about?
British soldiers are forced to build a railway bridge for their WWII Japanese captors, unaware of an allied mission to blow it up

Why is it any good?
Incredible directing and Alec Guinness at the top of his game. One of the best war movies ever.

#92
The Sixth Sense
(USA 1999)
Image

Who made it?
M. Night Shyamalan

Who's in it?
Bruce Willis, Toni Collette and little Forrest Gump (aka Haley Joel Osment)

What's it about?
A boy who sees dead people - and the now trademarked Shyamalan-Twist

Why is it any good?
Maybe the most incredible child performance ever and an haunting atmosphere. And of course: the Twist. Which Twist? I though you'd know by now that Bruce Willis is a woman.

#91
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
(USA 1975)
Image

Who made it?
Milos Forman

Who's in it?
Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher

What's it about?
A man convicted to jail time tries to escape his term by playing crazy. The plan backfires when he is sent to a mental institute

Why is it any good?
Jack Nicholson and Mental Institute: The perfect symbiosis. Besides incredibly acted, the movie succeeds in showing the life inside a mental institute and not branding those inside as idiots, but caring human beings

Pleasantville
(USA 1998)
Image

Who made it?
Gary Ross

Who's in it?
Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges, Joan Allen, Jef Daniels and the awesome J.T. Walsh

What's it about?
Two teens getting sucked into a cheesy black and white sitcom. The two soon infiltrate the perfect environment with their worldly sensibilities.

Why is it any good?
It is a clever take against racial prejudices as all those people affected by the teenagers get colored and the black and white guys start a witchhunt against them. The coloring is visually striking done by Ross and the performances are pitch-perfect

#89
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
(USA 1948)
Image

Who made it?
John Huston

Who's in it?
Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston

What's it about?
An adaptation of B. Traven's tale about a trio of prospectors who turn against each other when they strike gold

Why is it any good?
It is a gripping tale about greed and what it does to people. Bogey and Walter Huston are incredible

#88
The Truman Show
(USA 1998)
Image

Who made it?
Peter Weir

Who's in it?
Jim Carrey, Ed Harris, Laura Linney

What's it about?
A life-long Big Brother version

Why is it any good?
Peter Weir does it again and turns a genre actor into a character actor. Jim Carrey delivers what at that time seemed to be the performance of his live-time as a shallow guy whose live is televised to the world - unbeknownst to him. Fantastic script by Andrew Niccol, marvellous direction. A classic!

#87
Gladiator
(USA 2000)
Image

Who made it?
Ridley Scott

Who's in it?
Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen and Harry Potter's headmaster

What's it about?
A roman soldier is double-crossed by the cocky new emperor, gets sold into slavery and loses his family. He gets revenge as he proceeds to become a heck of a Gladiator.

Why is it any good?
It's the revival of the historic epic. Awesome action direction by Scott and a marvellous performance by Russell Crowe. Often tried to be copied in recent years (Troy, Alexander, King Arthur) but never reached

#86
Unforgiven
(USA 1992)
Image

Who made it?
Clint Eastwood

Who's in it?
Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman and yet again Harry Potter's headmaster

What's it about?
An ageing gunslinger comes out of retirement because he needs the money for his family. It's more an anti-western than a western cause all the heroes have lost their ideals they had as young ones.

Why is it any good?
It's Clint Eastwood's farewell to the western - and what a good one it is. Being the actor's-director he is, he inspires his cast to deliver top-notch performances. Don't expect to be blown away by the action, this is all about the characters.

#85
Minority Report
(USA 2002)
Image

Who made it?
Steven Spielberg

Who's in it?
Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton

What's it about?
In the near-futures crimes are solved before they even happen. Cop Anderton's belief in the system of the pre-cogs is shattered when it is predicted that he will kill someone in the next few hours.

Why is it any good?
Based on a short-story by Philip K. Dick this one raises not only interesting questions about crime-fighting, but is a visually impressive detective story. Steven Spielberg delivering his usual thrills and awesome action-sequences doesn't hurt either.

#84
Four Weddings and a Funeral
(UK 1994)
Image

Who made it?
Mike Newell

Who's in it?
Hugh Grant, Andie MacDowell and Mr. Bean

What's it about?
The title kinda gives it away...

Why is it any good?
It's from the time when Hugh Grant's boyish charme and confused looks where still original. A witty scripft (by Love Actually's Richard Curtis), real-life characters, clever jokes and a lot of heart makes this the definitive rom-com.

#83
Lawrence of Arabia
(UK 1962)
Image

Who made it?
David Lean

Who's in it?
Peter O'Toole, Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn

What's it about?
A biography of britisch adventurer T.E.Lawrence who leads the revolting arabs against the turks during World War I

Why is it any good?
It's the ultimate adventure movie. Keep some bottled water around when you watch it, cause then endless shots of the dunes will make you thirsty. Epic action scenes and an impressive cast make this a "thinking person's spectacle" (Video Movie Guide)

#82
L.A. Confidential
(USA 1997)
Image

Who made it?
Curtis Hanson

Who's in it?
Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey, Danny DeVito and Farmer Hoggett from Babe

What's it about?
Adapted from the novel by James Ellroy it chronicles how an ambitious young cop in L.A.'s 50s tries to rise above his corrupt colleagues.

Why is it any good?
Because it features one of the most impressive ensemble-casts ever.

#81
Master and Commander
(USA 2003)
Image

Who made it?
Peter Weir

Who's in it?
Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany

What's it about?
An adaptation of Patrick O'Brians epic sea adventure about the Napoleonic Wars and the special friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey and his mate, erm, doctor Stephen Maturin

Why is it any good?
Peter Weir recreates the period perfectly. If you just go to the movies for the action be warned: The movies has far more interest in the characters and the faithful recreation of the sea-life. But when the cannons go off, you'll be blown away by the action as well.

Lola Rennt
(GER 1998)
Image

Who made it?
Tom Tykwer

Who's in it?
Franka Potente, Moritz Bleibtreu

What's it about?
When her boyfriend loses 100 000 Deutschmarks of gangster money, Lola Runs through Berlin without a plan how to help him but convinced that she can because "Love conquers all"

Why is it any good?
It is an exciting roller-coaster ride, paced by techno-beats and visually impressive, including animated sequences and dream sequences. Not surprisingly it even has a cult following in the US - which german movie can say that about itself?

The Sweet Hereafter
(CAN 1997)
Image

Who made it?
Atom Egoyan

Who's in it?
Sarah Polley, Bruce Greenwood and Bilbo Baggins

What's it about?
The aftermath of a bus accident in which many children have died. Based on a novel by Russell Banks

Why is it any good?
Ian Holms portrayal of the conflicted lawyer who comes into town is breathtaking. On the one side he tries to urge everyone to convince the parents to hire him so he can sue whoever responsible for the accident, on the other side he himself struggles with his fragmented relationship to his drug-addicted daughter.

Duel
(USA 1971)
Image

Who made it?
Steven Spielberg

Who's in it?
Dennis Weaver and a monster truck

What's it about?
Dennis Weaver and a monster truck

Why is it any good?
Steven Spielbergs feature film debut is til today an exciting ride. Helped by a script by Richard Matheson (based on his own short story first published in Playboy magazine), which cleverly never shows who is driving the truck, this is a car-drivers nightmare and a filmlovers-dream. Often copied, never reached.

#77
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
(USA 1977)
Image

Who made it?
Steven Spielberg

Who's in it?
Richard Dreyfuss, Francois Truffaut

What's it about?
A jam session between Aliens and Humans

Why is it any good?
The special effects, the score by John Williams, Richard Dreyfuss' performance and lots of other little things that combined result in an epic sci-fi movie

#76
Open Range
(USA 2003)
Image

Who made it?
Kevin Costner

Who's in it?
Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall, Annette Bening, Harry Potter's new headmaster and the guy from the ER reception

What's it about?
It's a western about the conflict between freegrazers and a local despot who declares war on them

Why is it any good?
Because Kevin Costner shows that, giving the right material, he can be a fantastic director. He captures the beauty of the land, manages to interweve (sp?) a beautifully told romance into the western story and stages a final shoot-out that is nothing but jaw-dropping
