TAE-BO!

Oh my god, it works so well! I mean, nothing gets you sweating, and your heart beating faster then Tae Bo. As long as you have room to kick, and move 3 steps, you could do it anywhere! And if you really are looking for fast results, the Advance Video is certain to give you either greater stamina, or a heart attack.

jb's right about jogging in cold weather. It's a quick way to give yourself a heart attack if you have undetected heart problems.

I would just do situps, pushups, jumping jacks, and jog in place in your room, bABA. That's a decent way to get your heart pumping and blood flowing everyday until the sun starts to come out again. Aslo, get a lot of sleep and drink a lot of water.

Be sure to post the video. On the unintentional comedy scale ... this would rate a 10. It would be like Napolean Dynomite 2.

Maybe its the winter blues or whatever. I've barely stepped out anywhere lately and my social activities involve sitting at a friend's place or a restaurant or a bar, playing video games or cinema or whatever.
Its freezing outside, I've been mostly depressed and as each day goes by, I fall more and more into a depressed state and my body becomes more and more usless.

I can't afford a gym membership right now and it'll hurt me too much if i get one and then never end up going. Its freezing outside and my room doesn't have much place. But mroe than anything, I want to start taking some positive steps. And the first thing on the agenda is building my stamina back up.

I've lost a lot over the years. I was part of atheletics teams .. never a runner but i was great at field events. I was considered atheletic only cause i could keep going if required. But since i joined the university over 5 years ago, i stopped doing everything i would, with my only exercize coming from walking block after block in -20 temperatures. I would have those days where in case i was in a hurrt, i could cover 16 blocks in a slow jog but thats it. 2 years ago, i was biking a bit. But now, i'm really the lowest I've been. I'm sure i would start panting if i jogged beyond 50 to 60 meters.

I really need to get back in shape. And i need help from you guys. I need to pick up my stamina but i have no idea how to start ... jogging outside right now will only cause me to get sick. and i have little walking space in my room, no money for a gym. Suggestions?

Sorry, started skimming and lost patience, so if I'm repeating, just pay me no heed. I'm like this too bABA, and used to do alot of field events and sprints, so sometimes I just get shocked at what a lazy tired bum I've become. On the other hand, being a veteran of freezing places too, I have tons of recommendations. I have the killer sit-up list from hell that takes only about 15 minutes. I used to roll out of bed (way back when I lived somewhere with a floor, I plan to start this up again once I do) and do the set in about 15 minutes and it jump started me. Anwho, start by doing about 30 push-ups, then roll over and do sets of 30 situps (ten types) and in between sets don't relax, hold your body in the "hollow" position fora count of ten and then ease into the next type of sit-up. Play around with them, do regular ones, crunches, those elbow to knee side ones, ones with your legs up, ones where you lay on your side and use your side tummy myscles, etc. Then when you're done that role over onto your front and do about 50 super-mans, they're really good for strengthening your back and creating good posture, then do another set of push-ups. Do it very rapid without really stopping and you'll get the whole thing done in 20 minutes and its pretty good on muscle and cardio vascular (you'll be breathing hard by the end) then to calm down stand up and do some hell raises. That's that, its a good kick start cheap alternative that doesn't even require room like lunge-walking does. Also, drink 50 gadzillion cups of coffee, I'm off for cup number three right now as I've been up since 7 this morning and am so dead tired I need a pick-me up before going back to the library.

Hope that helps, its the cheapest, quickest, easiest routine, least time consuming thing that workd your lungs and heart and muscles all a little bit.

Tae-bo might be too strenuous for the moment.

I suggest the good ol' Harvard Bench Step. Just get a solid step stool or stack of newspapers (or anything that's a foot high and won't move). Step right foot up left foot up, right foot down left foot down. Do that for a minute or so and it will get your heart rate up just fine. The best time to do this is while your waiting the two minutes that your coffee is heating in the microwave.

@Dolce: I tried to understand most of it. I guess you'll have to show me these killer routines the next time i'm around.

erendis: I'll give this a try. I'm now on a quest to clean up as much of my room as possible. This type of cleaning involves throwing anything away that isn't useful or have sentimental value associated to it.Hoping to make enough space to throw away this book shelf I have. I'll get something for the steps then and i'm hoping to invest in a bench. That way, I wont have to get a gym membership at all. I'll ask my broth back for all my weights.

If you are seeing a doctor then you should get advice from your doctor and not be asking us these questions.

It's like with the fad diets that hit a year ago... South Beach, Atkins... they are okay for some but a serious change in lifestyle demands that a doctor be involved somewhere to help pinpoint where the trouble spots are and lead you to healthy endeavors.

Even vegas and vegetarians should see a doctor before they make a jump into that lifestyle change to ensure they are getting all the nutrition their body needs.

Excersize is no different.

NM just saw the complicating factors. I hope you get better soon.

Lifthing weights within moderation will help some. Ideally walking a lot and light jogging but that seems to be not possible at the moment.

bABA...I will send you an extra special dolce illustrated manuel for sit-ups. It will probably be not much better than dolce's illustrated manuel for kj's front page layout (remember that? haha) but It will be in you pm box tomorrow. Maybe if it makes you laugh really hard it will be like a good tummy workout anyways!

Seasonal Adrenaline Disorder (or as I call it Scandanavian Sleep Sickness) is pretty common in the winter, but there are lots of good suggestion in this page like jb's and hans' jump rope one. Plus with a jump rope you can also do good stretching exercises that get blood flowing. If you have hard wood floor, for sit-ups I would say fold a blanket otherwise you'll notice that you've started bruising that muscles around the bottom of your spine. no biggie, but hurts to touch.

The doctor is actually being seen for another reason all together. I developed a problem long time ago that sort of resembles acid reflux though some of the symptons aren't exactly the same. This basically causes my entire eating patterns and quantities to get disrupted. I've been on medication for it ofcourse. I'm in no way seeing the doctor for diet reasons though. This was an actual medical problem i've been suffering with for over 2 years.

I developed reflux as a freshman in college when i managed to put on something like 25 or 30 pounds in less than 1/2 a year. i was stuck with it for a couple years, but it starts to go down when your lifestyle isn't too chaotic. For me the most problems come from lack of sleep. it still kicks up if i go three days with less than 4 hours. Its more problemtaic than my vino, coffee, and chocolate bar consumption habits, so from what you've said in the thread, your trouble might stem a bit from your lack of sleep. Hopefully when that gets resolved your system will fall back into equilibrium. i always saw these things as warning signs. I hope this is not all anxiety related bABA? I know you actually take thing very seriously, and the sleep, stamina, and everything else could actually be stress related! Take care of yourself.

I realize this, but why NOT consult a doctor about your energy levels, your diet and excersize?

yea ... remember when i was in newyork and that half a salad i ate? thats all i ate in a day and a half plus half a snack here or there. my last 3 months were really bad. the problem is, i dont have all the normal symptoms for acid reflux. I'm on nexium right now which is helping but at the end of next month, i have a scope exam to attend which will let them figure out what the hell is going on.
