 Re: Duplicity
This was tons of fun. It never feels dull and the two stars share great chemistry with each other. It soars when it's just Julia and Clive on screen sharing some very well written witty lines. The ending is perfect, and sets a great tone. It's by no means perfect, but it's pure enjoyment. The crowd I was with ate it up, should have great legs. B+

 Re: Duplicity
Slick and loads of fun. Julia Roberts (in a welcome return to lead roles) and Clive Owen share a sexy, unforced chemistry, and the supporting cast including Paul Giamatti and Tom Wilkinson is effective. Duplicity is significantly more light-hearted than Tony Gilroy's last (Michael Clayton) but nearly as well-plotted and well-made. This isn't a great movie but it is very entertaining and the sort of breezy fun that makes for an enjoyable two hours. I also enjoyed the unconventional ending in which... the heroes are the ones who have gotten played at the end, rather than the reverse B+

 Re: Duplicity
Julia Roberts return to the screen is a great one and her chemistry with Clive Owen is great. The story is creative and is overall just a very enjoyable film. The spin at the end is also great. B+

 Re: Duplicity
Like the characters in the movie itself, Duplicity keeps on playing its audience until the very end. Though writer/director Tony Gilroy moves from the serious legal thriller Michael Clayton to lighter fare here, hardly any of the intelligent writing is lost. This is a movie that demands its audience's attention and keeps viewers on their toes by always staying a step ahead, particularly when it seems like there's nothing else to figure out. The non-linear presentation works very well, with layers of backstory being peeled away as appropriate to the events in the present (though it does get a bit sluggish and needlessly tough to follow at times). Clive Owen and Julia Roberts are right on the money as the sexy couple caught up in corporate espionage, nailing excellent chemistry in a far more pleasant relationship than the one they shared together in Closer. With solid, fun performances, humorous moments, and some stylish techniques at hand, Duplicity is a highly entertaining movie that doesn't disappoint, especially when its final (and best) twist is unveiled.

 Re: Duplicity
4/10 -> D
The way the story was plotted was irritating. The twists weren't that predictable (besides the last one) but the way they were delivered was completely mishandled. The time jumps (and the lame montages between) were more irritating rather than a goofy way to shed a new light on the events.
The acting is underwhelming from both leads and even the supporting cast doesn't manage to give a single bright spark.
The overall experience of the movie - borefest from the beginning to the end. I never cared, never laughed, never bought into their love story. The movie never did anything for me. Pity. The concept (although not the most original one) could've been exploited much better.

 Re: Duplicity
If a film could blow itself the result would be Duplicity. I can't remember the last time I saw a film that was so in love with itself. By the half hour mark I was pretty much disgusted with it. And the overall tone of the film I felt was a colossal miscalculation. I wasn't going in expecting a heist romp like Ocean's Eleven, but when you have serious/thriller music playing over a bunch of people standing around machines that duplicate copies from a building across the street, something is wrong, especially if the building across the street is a company that specializes in soap. I normally like James Newton Howard, but less would've been more here. His score belongs in another, and much better, film. And the way the story is told is godawful. The first 45 minutes are absolutely confusing. By the time the end comes around (Which I thought would never come. In the last 20 minutes it felt like there were two different endings) it all comes together but I could hardly care at that point.
Not everything was horrible though. I liked Paul Giamatti and the speech he gave at the end. I also liked the last shot of the film with Owen and Roberts both having that dumbfounded look on their faces at the end of the film. I think I had the same look on my face when the lights came up.

It's smart (whether it's good or not is debatable, but it is intelligent material) and people, the general public, are not. They like dumb things, typically, although this does not always stand true (IM, TDK, POTC) And I know I sound like an elitist, but it's hard not to.

...but it's a bad kind of smart. The director and writer pretty much ruin the story because of their need to show off how smart they think they are. This movie coulda been great if it had replaced some of it's brains with some more heart...

Whether that's a good or bad thing is debatable, which was my original point, whether it's true or not is what we were debating.
