Post Do you think I'm useless?
We had this computer chair for a few years, but as time went on, it wore out. So, we had to substitute this chair from the kitchen a few years ago, and it just stayed, instead of getting a new one. And alas, it wore out, and the back of the chair broke off, most likely from leaning against it. I broke the news to my parents, and they were pissed off about it. I know I shouldn't sit in a chair and lean back a bit, because that's obviously not what you should do with a chair, right? Anyway, I said I was sorry, and that I couldn't really do much else to fix it, so I didn't know why the hell they were pissed. I came back into my room, sitting on half a chair, and not worrying about it, since it was still something to sit on. Then, they flip out completely, because of an accident. Calling me useless was one of the few things they did, among other insults that I didn't appreciate at all, and now I'm here, since I usually don't tell anyone else about it. It has happened before, but I usually just shrug it off. But, sometimes it gets to me. Maybe they're right, you know? Meh, I dunno... it kinda upset me, which has resulted in me sounding like a little 12 year old girl writing in her blog about her bad day. But, it seems others have expressed their personal problems on here lately, so I figured I would too. Excuse the rant of personal problems, I'll be back to my normal self soon enough.

Mr. X, There is nothing to be gained by a parent calling their kid useless. Constructive criticism is OK. Putting down and calling names will not work and negatively affects the kid.

Cheer up buddy \:D/ Go watch a good Bill Murray movie. That kind of criticism is unwarranted and is best ignored.

Thanks, peoples. I usually take it with a grain of salt, because I know my parents have a shitload to deal with, and that they never actually mean it. Should they do it? Probably not. But, it usually just goes in one ear and out the other. Tonight, it kind of struck a nerve, and I felt like letting you people know. Perhaps I will watch a Bill Murray movie. Something fun, though, like Ghostbusters.

Parents are like that sometimes. Trust me. I'm working on moving out because mine are so over-bearing.

 If they ask why I did it, I'll say "Rusty told me!". Then, I'll be shipped off to the nuthouse, for having a friend called Rusty in some place called The World of KJ.

Well, you know my opinion on the whole thing already, but I'll quickly sum it up. All people react in different ways when they deal with stress and this is how your parents deal with it apparently. Is this an excuse? No, not really, but at least an explanation. I don't think that deep in their harts they think that you're useless. Personally, I think you should talk to them about that once they calm down, maybe in a couple of days. I am pretty certain they'll regret that they've said it.

And as a matter of fact, no, you're not useless. Without you, "Steamy Nights in the Igloo" could never have been made!!

You shouldn't suck it up all the time, at least not when you feel that what has been said was really unfair. You should get into a civil discussion with them over it later on, once they're less upset. I know that this discussion will not be very fruitful at first, but if you repeat it some times, there might be results, really.

Ah, that's too bad. You're definitely not useless. Like everybody else said though, parents have their brainfarts too. I guess it just depends on how many your parents have and whether they realize it or not.

Personally, I would suggest moving everything around in your house and throwing away a lot of things. Hey... it worked for you in the past in other situations!!

If that doesn't work you can remind them that someday you'll be the one taking care of them and ask if they would like to finish their life off in a really crappy nursing home.

Nope, you're not useless, they're just frustrated. You're a good guy and sometimes people, even parents, don't handle themselves well. They're sublimating their dissappointments onto you, learn to read the signs and not take them personally. I do that too, though not in the same way, and its very tough to know when to step back from situations with people you care about and care for. They're tired is all, and as long as they don't do anything worse to you, I'd just remember your own sentiments come first. I know you've been dating for three years (or something, forgive me if I'm mistaken) so clearly someone doesn't think you're useless. To me that also means you're off to college pretty soon. Things change then, and you need to build a sense of strnegth that doesn't come from external factors because otherwise college will kill you. As long as you don't think you're useless, than you're not. I know its hard to listen to comments of a similar vien for too long before you start thinking them about yourself. I've had experiences like that as well, and ended up treating myself pretty disrespectfully in some ways. But you need to try and seperate the two. Now would be an excellent time to do a little writing, which I know you've mentioned you've done, and remind yourself of the talents and skills you have which you can build upon and have potential. Don't waste your time thinking your worth is in fixing a chair unless you plan on going into the carpentry or the furniture business.
