Yes! This is in my list of favourite teen films ever. 1999 was a good year for these types of films.

Grade: A-

Just watching it now, for the first time and really enjoyed it.. Ironic fact: Julia Stiles in this film in a scene reads The Bell Jar, and she is cast in the movie verison comming out this year.. something I noticed.

Another thing: Allison Janney is HILARIOUS in this movie, delivering yet another one of her scene-stealing performances.

I'm going to buy it tomorrow. And agreed, Alisson Janney was hilarious, she's always so scene stealing.

B+/A-. Wow, I didn't think I'd love this at all actually. I'd skip by it when it was on tv but now, finally, unfortunately under the circumstances I watched it and I'm thankful I did. While it is, VERY 90's, that is what kinda makes it great. So enjoyable. And the "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" scene is my favourite.

Decent and passable teen rom-com, that earned a cult status which will certainly increase after Heath Ledger's tragic death.

And yes, Allison Janney is extremely fun to watch here in her brief role - if there's a scene I remember here (aside from the final one in the classroom) is the one where she's trying to write an erotic novel in her office.

I really really would like to know how Ledger's death impacted the ratings of this film and inflated them... anyway...

B+

I like it a lot (and not only now, heh). I read The Taming of the Shrew in school and the movie shares no resemblance at all with the source, except for the very basic plot structure and a couple of character names, but it is still an entertaining romp on its own. Ledger and Stiles make a good couple together and have chemistry. Of course, it is very predictable and doesn't always avoid the pitfalls of your typical teen comedy, but it is the better of its kind.

I was surprised to learn that this was from the same writing duo behind Legally Blonde and She's the Man, two other favorite teen/young adult comedies of mine. I guess this means I need to start looking forward to I Know What Boys Like...

I saw this movie in theaters and instantly fell in love.

It's not great art. But it's just so enjoyable. And surprisingly witty for what it is.

Walter Stratford: This morning, I delivered a set of twins to a fifteen-year-old girl, do you know what she said to me?
Bianca: "I'm a crack-whore who should have made my skeazy boyfriend wear a condom"?
[beat]
Walter Stratford: Close, but no. She said, "I should have listened to my father".
Bianca: She did not!
Walter Stratford: Well, that's what should would have said if she wasn't so doped up!

I think both this and Brokeback I would have enjoyed the same before his death. I'm watching Casanova soon, we'll see how that turns out.

It's nothing special, but it's easily the best of that strange fad of teenage Shakespeare adaptations.

I almost loved it, but every problem that arose would fix itself within two or three minutes. However, Ledger was terrific, it walked the funny/touching line well, and some of the scenes were very memorable ("Can't Take My Eyes Off You"). Could've been great, but I guess they didn't have enough time to tell that whole story perfectly.

I so love this movie. I remember being forced to watch it in the movie theater with my high school friends and coming out being thankful and giddy as a schoolgirl. Anyway it was either Life or this but really, I can watch this movie time and time again and I still love it every time Julia's character hits her head against the chandelier, every time their Father makes Bianca wear that pregnancy suit in order to go out and every time that kid goes down the hill on his bike. Also the songs, they are part of the soundtrack of my life. And this was the first time I took notice of Heath Ledger. He looks so cute as a bad boy. I can't believe he's dead now.

"I need agua!"

Damn. Good. The "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" scene completely gave me the shits! 1999 couldn't get any better on chick flicks. This would have been an all-time favorite already, had I seen this years earlier. :grrr:

A magnificient film. Truly. It's incredibly clever and properly blunt all throughout. It doesn't' beat you to death with the romance, but rather mixes in a beautiful amount of both subtle and outrageous humor to keep the feel fresh. It gets somewhat preposterous at times, and somewhat cliched/conventional at others, but in the end its about as much fun as a film could possibly be, and all throughout it's wonderfully satirical and humorous.
5/5

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

Rewatching this on HBO right now. It's honestly one of my favorite comedies ever and one of the few teen movies of its era that's aged amazingly.

Yeah, it holds up well.
