Kiss of the Spider Woman (Hector Babenco, 1985)- 10/10
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (Terry Gilliam, 1988)- 10/10

"Teamwork, Sybil!"
-The king of the moon

Ok, a few words on the Baron: It at once reminds me of The Thief of Bagdad and many other entries in the genre, but it creates a world all its own. It's subversive, everything makes sense in two ways. That scene with the god and his monstrous machination Sybil flying after the Baron over the lunar landscape read to read me as man’s dependence on machine and how helpless we are when it breaks down on us. Uma Thurman is not Uma Thurman. I didn't even realize that was her until the credits rolled at the end. All I kept thinking was whoever that is is just a dead ringer for Keira Knightley. Seriously! And speaking about the gods and goddesses that appear in this movie, the birth of Venus sequence is simply breathtaking. Visual thrills abound. I really only rented this because the plot sounded somewhat like that of the coming Pixar feature Up and ended up loving it way more than I thought I would. Actually, that's a crude lie. I've been wanting to dive into Gilliam's filmography for some time but it's taken me until now to see anything by him other than The Brothers Grimm.

Lust, Caution
Nausicaa, of the Valley of the Winds

They both had a lot to like, but were also very flawed. Lust, Caution had the unfortunate luck of being released just after Black Book, which is a much better version of the same story. While I enjoyed Lee's elegant direction, by the end of it's nearly three hour running time I just couldn't help but feeling that that much time to tell such a bare story was rather indulgent.

As for Nausicaa, well it's certainly not Miyazaki's finest hour. For better of for worse, it has every anime cliche in the book. Plucky heroine with a cute shoulder pet who lives in a land of green rolling hills, a bunch of bad guys who don't realize that they're unintentionally going to destroy the world, a really bombastic ending with a surprise saccharine sweet ending. At times, it rises above the cliches. But the end was particularly disheartening. That said, Miyazaki's visuals are incredibly engaging - he really makes complete worlds that the audience can be fully immersed in, despite music that sounds straight out of a Super Nintendo game.

Actually, that's pretty close to accurate, I'd say.
