 Madame de... [The Earrings of Madame de...]
The Earrings of Madame de... Quote: The Earrings of Madame de... (French title: Madame de...) is a 1953 drama film directed by Max Ophüls. It was adapted from Louise Leveque de Vilmorin's period novel.
This film is considered as a masterpiece of the 1950s French cinema.
Andrew Sarris once called it "the most perfect film ever made".

 Re: Madame de...
There aren't enough superlatives. The sequence where Ophuls shows us the passage of time through a waltz is as beautfiul and expressive as the movies get.

9/10 -> A-
Wonderful movie... I agree with yoshue about the waltz sequence. It was magical.
But the only thing that bothers me is why did she sold her earrings in the first place? What did she need money for?

 Re: Madame de...
So upon 2nd viewing I think Madame de... is probably a perfect movie. A watchful eye and a more rested mind totally improved the experience. It was glorious to see everyone dance on the mirrors in that ball scene, something that totally went by me the first time I saw the movie. The camera moves by in such a fashion that draws you in, those long tracking shots, like the one where Madame de... walks across the room before being caught in her white lie, are so beautiful and impressive. I'm impressed. The acting is phenomenal across the board. I laughed when that Bible fell from her closet in the opening scene and loved the carriage crash scene. The music plays an incredibly important role in this movie, everything's built around it. Oh those earrings of Madame de... I want to see this movie again and again.

 Re: Madame de...
and it box likes other arts too: musical work here is a master class] and it uses sculptural unlike any film before had (and only a few later)
and then you push all those buttons together: F L M S ------> MFLS
NOTE: not gonna change it, but this was written in the course of an altered state
