Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
the scene between Dr. Manhattan and Rorschach at the end of Watchmen brought my girlfriend to tears. If there's one star of the film, it's Jackie Earle Haley. He brings so much humanity and pathos to a character that could have been one note.
If Shutter Island is a sucess, I'd love to see him nominated.

Public Enemies seems like it'll receive generally positive reviews, but with no real praise. The box office might be strong enough to justify it though (Its period nature, genre and strong pedigree put it in a good stance right now).

I'd move Public Enemies into the tech category, Atwood for costume in particular.

Partly a film about films and partly a film about love, Pedro Almodovar's "Broken Embraces" can't quite decide where its allegiances lie. A restless, rangy and frankly enjoyable genre-juggler that combines melodrama, comedy and more noir-hued darkness than ever before, the pic is held together by the extraordinary force of Almodovar's cinematic personality. But while its four-way in extremis love story dazzles, it never really catches fire.
I think there are definitely 3 nominees out of 7 highest voted below.
The Lovely Bones (Peter Jackson) Drama about heaven. 12% [ 21 ] Shutter Island (Martin Scorsese) Leo and Marty's 4th film. 12% [ 21 ] Nine (Rob Marshall) Adaptation of the hit Broadway musical. 11% [ 19 ] The Human Factor (Clint Eastwood) Nelson Mandela drama. 11% [ 19 ]
Public Enemies (Michael Mann) John Dillinger vs the Feds. 9% [ 15 ] Avatar (James Cameron) First Feature Film Since Titanic. 7% [ 13 ] Tree of Life (Terence Malick) Brad Pitt drama set in the 1950s. 7% [ 13 ]
I am surprised that Cheri has been mostly ignored.
Cheri (Stephen Frears) Drama set in 1920's Paris. 4% [ 8 ]
Each year, we've seen films get BP nominations based on lead performances. And with Stephen Fears at the helm AND the fact that its a period film, Cheri stikes me as the typical minor BP nominees.
There was some other freshness honored Sunday, incidentally the last Oscars until 2011 to take place in February (next year the winter Olympics takes care of the 14th, 21st and 28th, while the 7th is the Super Bowl -- will they go as early as January or the first week in March?).
Ooh, I never thought of that! I hope they go for the last weekend in January (i.e. Jan 31). That would be awesome. But it seems likely to me they'll just stick it in March, even though I don't want to have to wait that long. A Jan 31 Oscar show would create a neat dynamic in terms of following the Oscar season, with a few guild winner announcements and other things occurring after the Oscars (unless everyone squeezed even further to be ahead of them).

Now, a month or 2 later, that I know about a few of these movies a little more, I would go back and change up my votes some.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

I'd still stick with my 5 picks from however long ago I voted...
The Human Factor The Lovely Bones Nine Shutter Island Tree of Life
... and I'm confident at least two of those will surely be nominated.
Is The Fighter still coming out? Have we heard anything on The Informant?
