Yeah...that's never too early to discuss since most/all of us are gonna flock to that summer/winter blockbusters with the pretty CGI.

Anyway, I'd say we have pretty much two near-locks at this point:

Transformers 2
Avatar

One is a likely $350+ million grosser with definitely amazing effects.

The other is suppose to revolutionize visual effects.

Question is - which will be the third?

I think Harry potter and Wolverine are out because the effects people have never been partial to these two franchises. I think it'll come down to 2012, Terminator: Salvation and Watchmen. Then again, 300 garnered no love and effects from a film early in the year are probably not remembered that well, so it's 2012 vs. Terminator. I'll go with Terminator for now, though they do love water effects.

Avatar and TF2 are already in there... the last spot is a battle between Watchmen, Star Trek, and Terminator.

The Lovely Bones
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

The Lovely Bones should be pretty effects heavy for a drama.

Star Trek and Transformers are too ILM heavy, they'll only nominate one ILM heavy film. Lovely Bones is Weta heavy, and while Weta helped on Avatar, they aren't the only effects studio (as much as I've heard? Let me know if I'm wrong).

Avatar is likely the winner unless The Lovely Bones turns into a BP nominee/frontrunner, The Lovely Bones benefits from being a late-in-the-year entry. Harry Potter will get it's due at the end of it's run (the 8th film!).

Nah, Lovely Bones is too small-scale and low-budget for this category. Jackson is an effects man, yes, but I think the budget means it's not quite a What Dreams May Come. Maybe I'm wrong, but they haven't nominated a film that small-scale and small-budget in how many years in this category. They certainly haven't nominated effects more supplemental since...Saving Private Ryan? I don't know.

Avatar is a mortal lock, and it will win as long as it's not an abysmal failure. Transformers is in. I think 2012 is #3, with Potter in fourth. They didn't nominate T3, so no. Star Trek...maybe, but it depends.

Jon you bring up a good point about budget, but when you talk specifically about Jackson/Spielberg/Lucas films budget can be a little wonky as (with Lord of the Rings and Star Wars as examples) the productions are not necessarily paying full scale for the amount of effects work that gets done.

There's a fascinating documentary on Phantom Menance where Lucas essentially stares down ILM to fit the relatively small budget for Phantom Menace (which at $115 million was a bargain, even 11 years ago).

It's hard to tell though, I mean War of the Worlds had a $132 million budget but had a star attached to it which probably demanded at least 15%-20% of that total.

But part of my reluctance to nominate Star Trek or Harry Potter is that ILM typically has a really tough time securing 2 nominations. It's definately possible and has happened, but not very often (despite the fact they deserve it).

I do agree that Avatar pretty much has this thing to lose.

Well, $65 million these days is pretty damn low, though not so much for a drama. I think we'll need to see just how elaborate heaven looks. Art Direction is pretty locked, though.

I don't think there's any way for Avatar not to be nominated.

Avatar being nominated for Visual Effects is as much of a mortal lock as the Picture nominations of ROTK, Slumdog Millionaire, and the Animated Film nominations of Ratatouille and WALL-E.

A different one, one that no one (or very few) are expecting right now.
