 I don't get Hilary Swank
Two Oscar noms. Two wins. In a leading category, no less. When was the last time someone won two Oscars for a leading role in a row without any prior noms? I mean even Hanks was nominated before his two Oscars and so was Jodie Foster... I think it might have been Sally Field.
It just seems so random...not saying she didn't deserve them (I haven't seen Boys Don't Cry), but her career seems so weird - she just seems to pop out of nowhere, win an Oscar and disappear...because aside from her Oscars there isn't much going on in her career.
What has she done between Boys Don't Cry and Million Dollar Baby?
The Core Insomnia 11:14
(I think The Gift was shot before she won the Oscar...)
What has she done after Million Dollar Baby?
The Reaping The Black Dahlia PS: I Love You Freedom Writers
Some flops there, some decent performers, but no really big hits. Despite her two big wins, her career simply doesn't ever really seems to take off. I wonder whether she'll also end up like Sally Field who ended up starring in highlights like Legally Blonde 2 or Say It Ins't So and was mostly relegated to supporting roles. Because despite the acclaim she has gotten for those two films, I don't think she is widely seen as a terrific actress overall in a way that other two-time Best Actress winners are seen (like Jodie Foster, Bette Davis or Elizabeth Taylor).
I'm pretty sure she's gonna get her third nom this year for Amelia, though....

She wins an Oscar every 5 years. She's a comet.

Re: I don't get Hilary Swank
Freedom Writers was solid, but The Reaping and The Black Dahlia were both horrible.
I don't get Swank either. I haven't seen Boys Don't Cry, but I thought she was excellent in Million Dollar Baby. But if I didn't know she was a two-time Oscar winner going into watching any of her other movies, I would never guess it. I think she's too inconsistent to really have her talent assessed.

Re: I don't get Hilary Swank
She has given two very good performances, but the sad truth is that she's unattractive (or at least, not-pretty) and therefore has a lot more trouble getting good roles than most other Oscar-winning actresses (like Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman, etc).
Heck, both of her Oscar wins came from performances where they needed a somewhat ugly woman... and I guess there aren't too many movies where that works.
Meryl Streep, while not attractive, is arguably both more talented and more charismatic... that's why she's had so much success.

Re: I don't get Hilary Swank
Kathy Bates is not very attractive and even she has a higher profile, I'd say.

I don't know much about Amelia Earhart the person (will there be intense scenes like in The Aviator). But Hillary has the look down. So watch out.

Re: I don't get Hilary Swank
Well, Amelia Earhart certainly had an interesting life, as a woman break from conventions and having multiple open relationships at the same time.
Sounds very Oscar-y to me, but fuck, can Swank really tie Katherine Hepburn for most Best Actress wins?
I think her best chance is that the voters simply forget that she has won twice before (not hard).

I think her best chance is that the voters simply forget that she has won twice before (not hard). Does she have a mental breakdown at any point? Grave injuries? The open-ended nature of her death may be difficult to capture on screen. I would think it's Pfeiffer's year if Cheri is singled out. Carey Mulligan, the girl that blew the roof off at Sundance is too new. Cruz just won for a foreign language film, sorry Pedro.

The open-ended nature of her death may be difficult to capture on screen. I think it'll probably end with her flying off and then some text saying that she disappeared and was never found. Better than spinning some theories.

Re: I don't get Hilary Swank
now that she's won two, she'd have to be far and away the most praised lead actress to win. It's possible, but I wouldn't count on it... having three Best Actress wins by age 40 (?) would be quite amazing for an actress who most people have never seen in a movie before.

Not to mention, she won because she happened to be in the year's BP winner and had that riding in her favor (whereas I doubt Amelia will have the same benefit).

Two leading wins are still a huge deal. It has been achieved in the Best Actress category maybe 8-9 times overall? And only very rarely without having any other prior noms and/or distinguished careers. That WAS a big deal.

I'm sad that Annette Bening is still without an Oscar.

I thought Bening was better in Being Julia than Swank M$B. I'm one of the few, though.

I think she's great, a few questionable project choices aside. Freedom Writers was actually really underrated.
