Yeah, you know...it is to the point of me thinking - maybe he doesn't really care and just makes films he likes/wants to make?

I mean he said that one of the reasons to do The Da Vinci Code was spending lots of time in Paris and shootng inside of the Louvre (because judging by the boring film, the story couldn't have been the reason).

I'm also curious how much say Grazer has over Howard's choices. He allowed The Missing to happen.

Oh my. The worst of Howard's films.

The thing is that he can actually make a good bait film IMO. Frost/Nixon, Cinderella Man, and A Beautiful Mind were bait films but still good. I give him credit for being fairly consistent with his bait.

I like the quote about Howard that he's a skilled director that simply shows no personality or individuality in either style or choice of projects. As a story teller he's underrated, he's good at crafting tension and plotting and in general the parts of directing that's not just how stylistic your camera is (including being maybe the best out there at directing performances). Frost/Nixon shows all of these strengths particularly well... his work creating the tension of the interviews and making them exciting is very good filmmaking. He's just not an auteur. Jon Favreau is another guy heading down that path... Iron Man is a very well directed and made film... it's just without any style or personal touch. Nolan is sort of there too, though his films are at least always shot recognizably stoic and coldly. But he's an excellent filmmaker still in my opinion, one of the best currently working.

Not at all. There's a clear path in his films. Apart from what you've already mentioned, he always deals with flawed and usually morally compromised individuals, usually uses the same kind of editing and cinematography and so on...

Heh! Your list is almost exactly the opposite of mine. We're like the two Capt. Kirk's in the Star Trek episode The Enemy Within. I just pray we never meet, so that we don't end up causing the universe to explode!

Wait, did Shack just compare Ron Howard to Christopher Nolan?

Yeah, Ron Howard has no distinct style. He's not a bad or offensive director at all, but he simply has no signature. However, Nolan's films all have a certain ominousness and look to them.

Yeah, I agree on Howard. He has made some pretty good films. I like A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man and Appollo 13 quite a bit. But I wouldn't call any of them great. And in none of them did he leave his personal touch.

I grant you that they all look the same, but 'always deals with flawed and usually morally compromised individuals'?

Does that not sound like 91% of all movies? It's called conflict.
