I don't want Hilary Swank to win best actress. I would rather see Annette Bening or Kate Winslet win.

I won't be pissed, but disappointed if:

Chris, I'm so disappointed! I loved Cate! I guess you're rooting for Natalie?

How could you tell?
If Natalie can't win, I wouldn't mind Madsen winning, but I just didn't think Blanchett was that good. At least not to the degree she's been praised. I won't be upset if she wins, but disappointed.

I haven't seen Closer so I can't be objective, but IMHO Blanchett made The Aviator. Her scenes with Leo are the highlight of the movie.

I thought Leo stole the movie. It's his best performance to date, imo, while Blanchett's is still Elizabeth.

With Old Habits Die Hard out of the race, I think Shrek 2 is the most deserving movie for the best original song award.
I find myself strangely rooting for Hilary Swank. (I'd go for Winslet if she had a shot, but it looks more and more unlikely, still a surprise win for her would be excellent).

I've barely kept up with the Oscars this year (gee, I wonder why  ) so I guess all I want is for Aviator NOT to sweep. Leo has tied RotK once too many times already.

I have to admit, it is a little disappointing to see that people who were very into the Oscars last year, weren't into the Oscars at all, but were only watching and supporting it because they wanted their opinions validated by something that they really could have cared less about in the first place. :-#
There is always at least one reason for me to have some interest in the academy awards every year , and I see it as political gobbledygook, that means absolutely nothing where a film's merits are concerned. This year, it seems like a true barometer of who is interested and who is not. I'm sure the ratings will reflect that. It makes one wonder if they'll be sure to have a token blockbuster with a real chance of winning every year, should ratings be dismal this year.

Anyone other than Kate Winslet for Best Actress.
Anything other than Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind winning for original screenplay.
Anything other than Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind winning for Best Picture.
I have a sneaking suspicion at least one disappointment awaits me on the night...

And if you know the formula for creating a movie which you know in advance will be a sure-fire Oscar-quality $$ blockbuster, I'm sure a few Hollywood honchos would be happy to hear from you.
But you are right -- potentially lackluster Oscars do separate the true movie fan from the casual fan. I'm not afraid to admit I'm a more casual fan, like many people who watch the Oscars for reasons other than the art. If only the true movie fans such as yourself watched the Oscars, ratings would be so low that network TV wouldn't waste 3.5 hours of more profitable TV time on the telecast. They would ship it to HBO. And why not? HBO is the "movie" channel, right?

HBO is great, plus Chris Rock could swear.
"Million Dollar Baby my black ass. White America is obsessed with getting a champion boxer all for themselves. Where's Laila Ali? Venus Williams? Even Della Reese could beat the shit out of Hilary Swank."
"Now that bitch from T-2, she could fuck you up."

Bump...for the week before the Oscars
Oh and my current pick is - I don't want Virgina Madsen to win Best Supporting Actress, Portman and Blanchett were better, much better.
