Psst...don't say that. Snack thinks that scary movies are worthless and their audience should pretty much die. Apparently, they pander to their audience. Well, rom-coms pander even more and unlike horror movies, their audience is almost exclusively one gender which makes the pandering even worse because it's sexist pandering. A lot of girls like and see horror movies. Saw V's audience was 52% female.

Amazing for F13, which I bet will have a sizable female audience, probably near or over 50%, unlike something like HJNTIY, which had a pathetic 80/20 ratio of female to male audience according to BOM.

Someday, they're going to make a romantic comedy in which the two leads chop each other's heads off instead of kissing at the very end. WHAT.WILL.YOU.DO.

What a way to ignore everything I said and instead attack me

2009 is just amazing!

F13 had a good yet very frontloaded opening. It'll probably end with a total just above Cloverfield.

HJNTIY had a great hold and $100 million looks good for it.

Taken is a beast. I can definitely see this film making over $125 million.

Shopaholic did alright. I thought it was going to open big (like $25M+ 4-day) but still a high-teen 4-day is great for this film.

Amazing hold for Coraline. I can see this one holding out for a long time and making over $70 million.

Paul Blart is simply stunning. It opens to $32 million and spends five weekends above $10 million! It'll definitely pass Star Wras: SE as the highest grossing January film. Could it play with $150 million?

International did alright.

Pink Panther 2 and Push held well despite bad WOM.

Look at Slumdog number. When actuals come in, it may increase over the 3-day. I'm suprised it hasn't gotten over 2K theaters yet. When was the last time a film under 2K theaters passed $100 million?

Gran Torino is still strong and should pass $150 million.

What a tremendously strong weekend.

Pretty crazy opening for Friday the 13th, although not unprecedented (Freddy vs. Jason did open to nearly $40M in 2003). Legs will be awful but it doesn't matter.

He's Just Not That Into You benefited hugely from Valentine's Day as expected. I have to give WB/NL props for taking a "troubled" project that was delayed for a long period of time, giving it the perfect release date and turning it into a likely $100M+ performer. It's still performing pretty similarly to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

Taken is absolute insanity with its legs. I saw the movie last night and can understand why it's doing these numbers, it's a huge crowd-pleaser. Probably a lock for at least $120M.

Confessions of a Shopaholic looks overestimated but still did rather well. A solid $50M total could be in order here.

Coraline is doing fabulously, that's nice to see. There's nothing left to say about Paul Blart, I am really out of things to say.

I expected more from The International, but I suppose $10M is an OK sum considering Taken is obviously the action flick of choice and Clive/Naomi have never really been box office draws.

Slumdog is still chugging along beautifully, it (and The Reader, to a smaller extent) is the only movie to receive any sort of Oscar bump. It's at $86.5M now, the question is how much past $100M it can get.

I think generally this year there are some massive massive over-performers from films that would in any previous years market's die a death. It seems like more people are going to the movies to see products that would usually be shunned. Unusual year thus far.

Post Re: Weekend Estimates (3day)
Crazy, crazy, crazy weekend. There's really not much else to say.

Obviously, Friday the 13th is an enormous winner. Even though it was predictably frontloaded, a $42.2 million start for a horror remake (esepcially an R-rated one) is absolutely mind-blowing. It obviously had help from the "Friday the 13th on Friday the 13th" marketing ploy (and a little assist from Valentine's Day), but it still trounced expectations. It's an incredible start, and though it will miss out on the $100 million mark, it's still a huge hit.

He's Just Not That Into You comes out the top dog amongst the chick flicks this weekend, and managed a really solid hold. Yesterday obviously helped (as it was off just 15% from last Saturday), but a fall of under 30% against another chick flick in the top ten is very good. If it continues to hold well, it will be the third early year release to cross $100 million.

Taken is a beast. Considering what it had working against it (movie being up on the Internet for months and opening over Super Bowl weekend), it has had a mind-blowing run. $100 million is obviously a guarantee, and $125 million could definitely be in play.

Confessions of a Shopaholic came in a bit below expectations, but that's understandable with He's Just Not That Into You continuing to do so well. It's a good start considering how relatively new Isla Fisher is as a draw (and that it doesn't have the best timing, as many of the weaker reviews have noted), and it should finish with a solid total in the end. But it's still really odd to see Jerry Bruckheimer's name attached to it. It's definitely not the kind of thing with which I would associate him.

Coraline had an absolutely fantastic hold, and has had an excellent run thus far. It still has one more weekend before its first competition for 3-D screens (the Jonas Brothers movie) arrives, and it should be interesting to see how that one cuts into its legs (if it does). But even with that, I think it will still cross at least $70 million, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it get into the $75-80 million vicinity.

Paul Blart has had an amazing run, and it continues with an increase this weekend. It has also become the first release of 2009 to pass $100 million, and it's still got plenty of gas in the tank.

The International failed to meet expectations, but it still had a decent start, and it says a lot when a $10 million opening is only good enough for a seventh place finish. It should be leggy, but not enough to hit its $50 million budget.

Pink Panther 2 has a good hold, but it's still off more than 45% from its predecessor over the same frame three years ago.

Slumdog Millionaire continues to impress. Even despite never playing in more than 1,724 theatres, it has brought in $86.5 million. It's a sure thing to cross $100 million, and it should get a nice little expansion after the inevitable Oscar win.

That would have been mostly true up until I attended a friend's wedding this weekend, but it is no longer :D

You've got the remember: Libs is quite a bit older and it's easier for a girl to find a guy than the other way around.

Joe, do you ever wonder to yourself: "Am I one of those creepos on the internet that could make it on an episode of Dateline? Is that what's become of my life?"

Because, if I were you, I'd start that wondering.

No, because I'm not a pedophile and I've never hurt anyone in my life. Don't intend to either.

Joe... what the fuck, man?

I'm not gonna lock this cos, well... it's the 3 day estimates thread. But let's keep any discussion not related to the box office out of this thread. If you can't do that, then I'll lock not only this thread but also all future box office threads for ever. I hope that's enough of a threat for you.

Joe, you crossed a line here. Let's step into the site, shall we?

Slumdog Millionaire only spent 1 weekend in the top 5 as well during its entire run so far and yet is at $87 m already, and could top $125 m without ever making it to the top 5 again. I think it will certainly be one of, if not the highest grossing movie ever to not make it to the top 4 (someone correct me if I'm wrong on this), and if it hadn't spent that one week in the top 5, it would become the biggest film ever to never make it to the top 5 (currently Everest with $87 m).
