Re: Why do we care about the Oscars?
I love movies too much not to care about the Oscars.
Yes, they get it wrong more often than they get it right. But what am I supposed to do, boycott?
On the list of awards I want within the next 10 years,
A Pulitzer, a Nobel Peace Prize, and an Oscar.

Re: Why do we care about the Oscars?
I still like the Oscars for the movies alone, but financially, they are only still running on television because people make a big deal over what everyone is wearing, etc. If it were about the movies, this wouldn't still be on TV imo.

Re: Why do we care about the Oscars?
Now in days i just enjoy peoples bitching about the Oscar much more than the awards themselves, thats why Crash winning was great, i loved how many people went ape shit.

Re: Why do we care about the Oscars?
Why do I care? Because although there will always be cult hits, the Oscars are the only way that most people have any clue what the good movies of the past are. So when a movie wins Best Picture, it means that movie will be forever engraved in movie history. Even the bad ones are still remembered today. And win an actor wins an acting award, he will forever have that title in front of his name, and it'll give people a good deal of respect for him, regardless of whatever else happens during his career. Heck, even a nomination makes him look really good.
not to mention... it is the biggest ceremony for the medium I love. How could I not get excited about it?

Re: Why do we care about the Oscars?
Another reason I enjoy the Oscars, it gives us a good hint of which once popular stars (who end up winning an Oscar) will end up having all of their future films tank!

It's like fantasy football. The chase is what's interesting not necessarily the results.

I love expert film making enough to forever give the Oscars the finger. Bunch of fuckers awarding overrated movies.

Re: Why do we care about the Oscars?
I love the oscars because they have rather good taste in movies, and while they often make mistakes (crash and the soon to be Slumdog millionaire come to mind) they usually give awards to pretty good movies and give the lesser known "indie" type movies a chance to be hyped and get attention. This is really the only medium for "mainstream" moviegoers to hear about some of these movies. Although this year is pretty bad, much much worse than 2007 was. I'd say that with the reader taking the dark knight spot, and SM likely to win, this is a very disappointing year for the academy awards.
