 How to Lose Friends and Alienate People How to Lose Friends and Alienate People Quote: How to Lose Friends & Alienate People is a 2008 comedy film based upon British writer Toby Young's 2001 memoir of the same name. The film follows a similar storyline, about his five year struggle to make it in the United States after employment at Sharps Magazine. The names of the magazine and people Young came into contact with during the time were changed for the film adaptation. The film version (adapted by Peter Straughan) is a highly fictionalized account, and differs greatly from the work it was built upon. It was distributed in the United States by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and in the United Kingdom by Paramount Pictures and Channel Four Films (the former also distributed in Australia).
The film was directed by Robert B. Weide and stars Simon Pegg as Sidney Young, Kirsten Dunst as Alison Olsen, Jeff Bridges as Clayton Harding, Danny Huston as Lawrence Maddox, Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Johnson, and Megan Fox as Sophie Maes. The cast also includes Max Minghella and Margo Stilley. How to Lose Friends And Alienate People was released in both the United States and United Kingdom on October 3, 2008.

It takes a little while to get going, but I think I liked this more than Run Fat Boy Run. Shame it really didn't catch on here in the states. Jeff Bridges was hysterical and cought a couple of Big Lebowski references in there.
B+/ A-
Harmless comedy that while forgettable, was a good matinee movie to watch.

8.9-9.0/10 B+/A-
Some parts were ridiculously funny. Like, I could've been rolling on the floor if it wasn't nasty.
The story was a tad predictable, but still decent.

Re: How to Lose Friends and Alienate People A strangely neutered R-rated comedy...and yes this is despite the full-frontal tranny nudity.
I really did not expect it to go down the typical rom-com pathway to happiness, but man it sure does. It's a passable diversion with pleasant performances, but to my surprise the only thing about it that puts it in recommendable territory are Kirsten Dunst's hilarious drunk scenes.

Re: How to Lose Friends and Alienate People Not bad actually. The performances were well done, and the script was nicely structured. Although there wasn't too many laughs in the movie, but it was still enjoyable.
Grade: B.

Simon Pegg is charming and funny. He's a born comedian. In the hands of a less skilled actor his Sidney Young would have likely become an intolerable moron, but as it is, he's just portrayed as a naive, but lovable fool. There are obvious similarities to The Devil Wears Prada, but it lacks a strong and memorable turn like that by Streep in Prada. Pegg, however, still carries this film. Megan Fox provides eye candy (and lots of it!), but nothing less and there's absolutely no chemistry between Kirsten Dunst and Simon Pegg, but that's alright. The romantic part of the film never really worked anyway (I would say the same of Anne Hathaway's romantic relationship in The Devil Wears Prada). Instead it is just a fairly funny comedy with a few nice insights and a great supporting turn by Jeff Bridges. It sticks closely to the formula, but manages to get only the best out of it (mostly).
