The Mo'Nique one has the subtitle of "Based on the Novel by Sapphire" to distinguish it.

Oh snap, TWC and Lionsgate have sued each other over distribution rights to Push

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/con ... af28b33ecb

and here's an article on just how difficult it will be to market the film

I think TWC is probably the film's best chance at Oscar noms for the actresses.

Tyler Perry Present's Push has a bit of a stigma attached to it.

I have been busy at work, but I have to be honest and say when I first saw you mention the Mo'Nique Push, I was like "That action movie with Dakota Fanning is that good????"

Frozen River won the Grand Jury prize last year, and now has two nominations.

Maria Full of Grace won the Audience Award, and got an Actress nomination.

American Splendor won Grand Jury prize and got a Screenplay nomination and won the WGA.

In 2000 You Can Count On Me tied the Grand Jury prize with Girlfight, and while Girlfight disappeared YCCOM still got two nominations, the same as Frozen River. It also won the WGA.

So no, hardly never.

I will say the same thing I said about Sally Hawkins possibly missing out on Oscar this year in spite of her LA and NY wins.

Just because it hasn't happened before does not mean something can't happen for the first time any given year.

I hope Weinstein Company doesn't end up distributing it as I have a feeling they'd kill it's box office potential. And the potential is definitely there. The movie, if it stays true to the novel, has very universal appeal in the same way that The Color Purple did a couple of decades ago. In spite of it all I actually would dare to call the story life-affirming and all those other cliched adjectives. Taken into account a very media neglected demographic, crossover appeal, and awards buzz and I could see this doing very well at the box office. Maybe not a blockbuster or anything but it'll definitely do well if handled properly.

The media just wants to spin this story about how difficult it will be for this to break out so they can act shocked when it does well and turn it into an underdog story. But I suppose if it'll help the movie I don't mind all that much.

Reviews are in for Cheri. Lots of praise for Pfeiffer, Bates, Score, Costume, Cinematography. The movie itself is somewhat mixed, though comparisons to several past BP nominees is always a good thing.

Quote:

Stephen Frears' sumptuously mounted film of Colette's novel Cheri is for the most part an entertaining drama boasting a host of deliciously poised performances. If it finally fails to find a satisfying dramatic tempo or tone, it is still bound to attract sizable specialised audiences (roughly the same crowds who warmed to Frears' The Queen, Dangerous Liaisons and Mrs Henderson Presents or other classy period pieces such as Doubt, The Duchess and Atonement.)

Initial critical response at its Berlin competition screening was mixed, suggesting that Cheri might have a harder road to travel in awards terms than The Queen

Derek Elley at Variety

Quote:

Like a passable bottle of champagne, "Cheri" fizzes and slides down quite easily but lacks real body and doesn't really hit the spot. Driven along by Alexandre Desplat's busy score, scrumptious duds by Consolata Boyle, pastel-tinged widescreen lensing by Darius Khondji and, most of all, by Kathy Bates' scene-stealing turn, this Stephen Frears-Christopher Hampton adaptation of Colette's famous Belle Epoque tale of romance between an experienced older courtesan and a spoiled youth is, like Michelle Pfeiffer's lead perf, short on real passion and emotion. Moderate rather than sparkling biz looks likely.

Kirk Honeycutt at HR

Stephen Frears never makes the same movie twice. What he does do though is make thoroughly professional and immensely entertaining stories that pay particular attention to characters, their flaws, emotions and deepest desires. In "Cheri," he has another dandy. Whether it will travel as far as his last film, "The Queen," is hard to say, but with a radiant Michelle Pfeiffer as his heroine, "Cheri" could well be another breakout hit.

By the "big race", I meant Best Picture/Director. Assuming that's what Rod has meant.

And that really has never happened.

It hasn't won the Jury Grand Prize.

I was going by these:

I can't find any info online about the NC-17 rating.

I did find this great story about the fight between TWC and Lionsgate over Push

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/con ... 3a4a?imw=Y

Apparently it all boils down to emails and how they were responded to.
