Post The Romantic Comedy Thread
Ok, so weve probobly all seen a romantic comedy, from the pioneer of the genre, "Pretty Woman" right through to "Hitch". Its not considered a cool thing for movie fans, or guys for that matter, to indulge in a romantic comedy, because they are obviously targetted at women.

But, you know - i like a good movie, and i love the way studios market romantic comedies especially. Anyway, discuss all your favourite guilty pleasures [ie Romcoms] in here. Heres some suggestions

My Big Fat Greek Wedding [My Say: Bad movie, romantic comedy or not, transparent and cliched]
Pretty Woman [My Say: A classic romance story that benefits from Julia Roberts to no end]
How to Loose a Guy in 10 Days: [My Say: Pretty average, Hudson is endearing, but Matt M is a cardboard actor]
Maid in Manhattan [My Say: An insult to my intelligence, terrible movie, casting, direction and acting]
Two Weeks Notice [My Say: An enjoyable, surprisingly fresh romcom that shows us why Bullock is still around]
Notting Hill [Hugh Grant pisses me off, and Roberts is a bit catatonic, but its a good concept pulled off pretty well]
Love Actually [Great romantic comedy, too british in parts, but it is very original and very enjoyable]
13 Going on 30 [My Say: A really cute, warm, and funny romcom with some amazing acting]
50 First Dates [Drew Barrymore is great. May not be the most achieved movie ever, but certainly romantic and funny]
Along Came Polly [A bellow average romantic comedy that trashes a great cast]

Romcoms are movies that I'm never sure about. On the one hand, I have movies that I love, but then I also hate quite a few of them. Recently, I thought In Good Company was a great one. 50 First Dates was good, but a disapointment as an Adam Sandler movie. My Big Fat Greek Wedding is vastly overrated. I'll never, ever understand what people saw in this movie to make it a $240 million grossing movie.

some recent ones I have enjoyed...

- 50 First Dates
- My Big Fat Greek Wedding
- 13 Going on 30
- Along Came Polly

I am most likely going to see Hitch this weekend. If it is good it will join that list.

In Good Company wasn't exactly a romantic comedy. The Grace-Johansson romance was the subplot.

50 First Dates was a disappointment as an Adam Sandler film because it didn't feature his trademark whining and incessant yelling? It's a good thing you didn't see Spanglish.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding was popular because it appealed to an incredibly diverse group of people. It's just the kind of movie people sort of enjoyed and told their friends about.

Most of the romcoms from Studio Canal/Working Title films are excellent.

I've got to disagree with that. I've enjoyed plently of Adam Sandler movies. Not just his "trademark whining and incessant yelling" roles. Mr. Deeds, Anger Management, and Big Daddy were not like that. Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore are what you're describing. 50 First Dates was funny, but no where close to his other movies.

I thought Punch Drunk Love was a great little romcom. Though the com aspect is based mostly on personal taste.

Assault on Precinct 13!

I could have done with that £6.50! But because im such an avid film fan, i thought i'd check it out, good, but not worthy of my six quid.

I'm not the biggest fan of the genre. Not because of the genre specifics, but because most of them that I've seen have been poorly done. Most comedies today are poorly done , period. Most action movies are too. Heck, now that I think about it, most movies are. :-k

Nevermind...

Well ill definately be seeing Spanglish very soon [2 weeks], and In Good Company too. Although its debatable if either are romantic comedies [i think both possess elements, but are more As Good As It Gets style romcoms in the sense that drama and comedy are far more important than romance]

Avenging Angelo can be classed as a Romantic Comedy, and i love that little film.

MSN uk has released a list of "100 best chickflicks ever"
http://msn.videoisland.com/visitor/brow ... de_id=4526

users gave Pretty Woman just 3.5 stars, As Good as it Gets and Chocolat and Ghost just 3.5 too. Just as well MSN made the list eh? Since all 3 are 5 star films for me.

13 Going on 30 is also there, as is Notting Hill and The First Wives Club.

Doesn't Garden State could as a Romanic Comedy? I think that one is great.

Also I love MBFGW because it was something different and it is soo much like Armenian Families, even though in the film they try to deny it.
