I think a great question to ask if you fall in the camp that Heath's death propelled the film during award season, is had Heath LIVED, would his performance even been nominated for Best Supporting Actor? And if the film would have still racked up 8 nominations?

Most people know that Heath hated reporters and doing press for his films. He was miserable. A big part of the award season is making the rounds and showing up.

Clarification, I think Heath's death propelled the films performance (partially, not fully). The death + performance helped raise Heath's star power much beyond what it had been when he was alive. This translates to a memorable performance getting a deserved nomination. Does that make sense or is it jumbled?

Quote:

*If* Heath had lived would the mythic status of his performance and the press on it had been the same? Obviously no, I can only guess it would have been diminished. Would the film had made $500 million? Can I be cynical and say it would have made somewhat less (but not disasterously)?

Does it change the film? No. Does it change the perception of the film? Yes. Will this also greatly affect Dr. Parnasus' box office in the same way, obviously.

I'm in the "I'm not sold he'd be nominated" camp. Nicholson did miss for Batman 89, which would equate to a 425mil ish film today, and had a much more prestigious/academy friendly actor than Ledger.

There was a lot of categorical confusion with him, though.

But some people on here (not naming specific names, just a general sense) seem to ignore the fact that Ledger's death played a substantial impact in the reception of the film. His performance may be brilliant, but it was a driver for the success and critical reception of the film.

The film reception centers around that performance, for better or worse.

Hmm, you must have really enjoyed TDK, considering you chastised Batman Begins as much as anyone on the forum if I'm not mistaken. Or maybe I'm being presumptuous. Either way, I think you sort of nailed it, and why even if Johnny Depp was The Riddler, it wouldn't be the same situation. I don't think Heath Ledger's Joker performance would have been so scary to so many people had he not died, and had his death not been closely associated with the performance. That's not the sort of thing marketing can conjure up.

This is a really stupid question, we don't even know if it will be good.

We don't know the story, the cast, anything.

Might as well make a thread, will The Hobbit win? will Toy Story 3 win? Bear and the Bow? Newt? Avatar?

You're talking about wins, which is a completely different beast.

I think it's possible to make a "Will The Hobbit be nominated" or "Will Avatar be nominated" and have an interesting dicussion. Look at historical trends within the AMPAS, look at the release schedule for the year in question...

Newt, Bear and the Bow, TS3, now you're just being stupid.

1. If it couldn't do it this year it never will.

2. There's no way the 3rd film could live up to the 2nd.

Yeah, that hivemind herd definitely has trouble with independent thought sometimes, huh?

Too many followers, not enough leaders.

You didn't have a problem crafting a hivemind herd when you were the Oscar Czar. :funny:

Also, for its time, reviews for the first Batman also weren't nearly as raving as for TDK now.
