On the whole, the story is not one of Wall-E's original or bright spots. Wall-E is about execution.
If originality was the only criteria, then it shouldn't be nominated. If dialog is the only criteria, then it shouldn't be nominated.
So why was it nominated?
Because people like the movie.
IMO it's a bunk nomination, not that others aren't, but it's bunk.
A robot left alone on Earth falls in love, saves humanity, and dies. Sounds pretty original to me.

Wall-E's script is Z-grade apocalypse junk. It excelled on its excellent visual touch in the Earth scenes.

Ghost Town is a better screenplay than Wall-E's
In Bruges is a better screenplay than Wall-E's
I'm just saying... it's not about the movie, it's just about it's relative strengths. And whether it fits within the categories.

Then again, roo, In Bruges has a better screenplay than almost all films of 2008...

Re: What win do you REALLY not want to happen this year?
I feel a need to point out the bland nonsense of WALL-E's screenplay. The first 25 minutes are visually amazing and i loved it but in terms of apocalypse logic its non existent and then after that its just simplistic nonsense of the highest order. I can't handle the condescending nonsense WALL-E hits me with, it screams Eco love and then hits me with complete lies. Its just utter stupidity.
I adore apocalypse films and I think people should compare the first 30 of WALL-E to A Boy and his Dog and we can compare and we see the flaws in this depiction.
Shite this sounded like a very very serious debate. sorry people i just had a speech of sorts.

Night of the Comet is a B-Movie classic. Full of cliched characters but still great fun.
Better still ask Roo about Solarbabies.

Slumdog for best score.
The Dark Knight had the year's best score but that was snubbed. Wall-E's was second best. That should win.

Hmm, can't remember the last time there were so many opponents of a Best Picture frontrunner. I think even Chicago enjoyed more support back then at BOM.

Chicago was actually enjoyable and seemed like a BP winner. Slumdog is a tourist of epic proportions.

Chicago had a lot of support from what I remember at Oscarwatch and BOM. It was an entertaining film.

So, um, what was the last frontrunner that had this much backlash before it has won?

Night of the Comert had Catherine Mary Stewart, my crush in the 80s (well, one of them), dancing in an abandoned shopping mall to Cindy Lauper's 'Girls just wanna have fun'. An unforgettable scene in the history of movies.
Whatever happened to her? Last I remember she was in 'Weekend at Bernie's.
EDIT: Just found a recent pic of her on IMDB. Hasn't done much in the 90s and 00s, mostly TV work. She looks very good for 50.
It starts at 2:19.

now that it's possible, my main pick would be Kung Fu Panda upsetting Wall-E. Oh god if that happens...
