No argument there. I think the Academy got too carried away with that one.

I like to add Forrest Gump on the list. The character is stereotypically southern and dumb. He just has no sympathy. They just use his trait as an exucse for tears.

I liked Lost in Translation so cant complain there.

Most of the 1996 crop were probably not deserving (weakest BP group ever??) but I guess not alot to choose from.

1996 was a great year.

Braveheart - Not as good as when I was 12, but still a good film and deserving of a nomination.
Babe - Awesome movie and something fresh.
Sense and Sensibility - I love Austen, this is one of my favorites films, and I think it and Braveheart could switch.

Il Postino - Never saw, maybe replace with Casino.
Apollo 13 - Rob Howard's best film! Not to mention it is a good movie.

Kill Bill Vol 2

Oh my. That's such a beautiful list I could cry.

 My bad I should have been more specific. I meant 1996 films, ceremony held in 1997.

You are talking about the 96 ceremony for 1995 films. And I agree, 1995 had better films than 1996 (the ones mentioned above + Seven, Casino, Suspects etc).

Sling Blade and Hamlet were snubbed in 1996. Amazing achievements.

Indeed. Very odd selection that year.

I don't think Juno coasted on page--I know the very mannered script and idiosyncratic style was a turn-off to a lot of people, but it was also the key to the movie's success. If a single person was the driving force behind its awards success, it would be Diablo Cody and her cult of personality. Remember, she's the one who got the Oscar. (Did Page pick up any awards?)

1998's most well-aged films are Big Lebowski, Babe: Pig In The City, The Truman Show and The Thin Red Line. Private Ryan's astounding, but the script kind of nags on subsequent viewings, it's all about the visceral punch.

I find Gangs of New York to be the most awful nominee of the past 10 years. I could deal with Crash as a nominee but as a winner?

Definitely Crash, Babel and The Reader. Those three really stick out for me. There are certainly other questionable choices but nothing comes close to how bad these are.

American Beauty is the nominee (And winner, ugh) that immediately comes to mind as a film I genuinely dislike, nay, hate. Otherwise, Gigi, Crash and the first half-hour of Dr. Doolittle (I'll eventually finish it) are thoroughly mediocre.

If you hate American Beauty, you have no soul.
