 The Reader
Now that we know a film can (basically) come out of nowhere with a 60% rating at Rotten Tomatoes (I thought the film was good btw) it will be used to justify any insane-o prediction from here on out.

 Re: The Reader
well, without the Globes, this would've had nothing... I think this reminds us that the Globes do have a stronger impact on the Oscars than it has seemed in the past few years.
But this makes all the Great Debaters out there much better off than they should be.

 Re: The Reader
It's so weird how they've stumbled their way through the last few seasons, making themselves seem incapable of getting anything nominated, and all of the sudden stumble upon this. The sucker's still got it.

Not to rain on the parade of hyperbole but The Reader being nominated does not necessarily say anything about the Globes. it says that the Globes were spot-on with this, nominating it for Picture, Director, Screenplay, and Winslet. This and BAFTA might have been the only awards groups to do so.

 Re: The Reader
It's funny the conclusions people will jump to.
Could it be that the Academy just really liked the movie?

And people still said the Globes had little impact.

 Re: The Reader
This tells us any Holocaust-themed movie should not be ignored.
Also, if the producers (Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella) had strong Oscar support in the past and recently died, their friends will want to honor them one last time.

Could it be that the Academy just really liked the movie? No, that's not possible. They had guns pointed at them. It was all very tense for a while.

 Re: The Reader
I am really just baffled by The Reader. You said it. A 60% RT score. This is 30 times more surprising than something like Chocolat getting nominated because we were used to it from the Weinsteins.
I guess this shows they're back in the game. Hmm.
I'm not going to trash the movie, though. I haven't seen it and, despite the vocal criticisms of some on here, I'm sure I'd like it. Plus, I just really really want Kate to win an Oscar, and the movie's strong support indicates there's a good chance.

 Re: The Reader
And despite Chocolat's 58%, it had its passionate fans. This, not so much.

 Re: The Reader
This really just solidifies that BFCA is MUCH more important than RT when judging a film's strength in the block. The Reader has a very solid and BP level 87 at BFCA. Regardless of the critics, that means the AMPAs like it at least well enough for it to have a BP shot

 Re: The Reader
RT is bad because the internets let anyone review a movie.
