I'm unclear on how Daisy is a slut. I mean in the film you see her with 3 people. Button, the young NY fella and her later husband. Not to slutty there I must say.

Benjamin on the other hand goes to a brothel, has an affair with a married woman and also has a section where he accepts he slept around. If anything Benjamin is the slut here.

exactly.

and what she was 23 during the time in NY. She was doing what 23 year olds do. She was immature, as you could during the scene at the restaurant and the bit after dinner when she comes onto him.

I'm sorry but that's a spotty record. 4/6 and it appears the movies he had most control over, the only female characters in the whole film are possesions and/or sexual objects or people who serve men. Another is a franchise film with an established lead which was his big break and oppurtunity. I'll accept Panic Room

Haven't seen Seven or Fight Club, but Zodiac isn't exactly a story blooming with great female roles, assuming one wants to stay true to the story.

Though I do like how you're trying to show how much Fincher doesn't like women while referring to one of his characters by two of the most derogatory words possible to throw at a woman, and a woman that really doesn't seem at all deserving of the titles. Classy.

Btw I'm not ragging on her being a slut (though she is, which I thought was clear with the all the men line and the way she went around. I'm not even saying that as an insult towards the character, being promiscuous does not harm a film character for me in any way)... I'm ragging on her being a person without any worthy attributes. If you could ask Button hypothetically "Name me all the things you love about Daisy that puts her above everyone else?", what would he come up with that's shown in this film? Her blue eyes? Her dancing? uhhhh. Daisy is totally empty as a character and in terms of noteable attributes that make her her

well that's your prerogative shack.

i thought she seemed detached from life, even as a child. the same way Swinton's character was.

Daisy was great as a child, once she grew up though, it all went downhill. BORING.

And my main problem with the movie still is that it never settled on one thing. The most enjoyable part of the movie was when he was in Germany... and that didn't even last that long!

WAY too jumpy on different subjects.

Can I ask what's interesting about Daisy? I can't find anything. She's pretty much just a shallow slutty dancer chick, Button loves her on first sight and the movie never presents any other reason for him to, other than her looks. At least Tilda had a few interesting things to say.

actually I do agree with this and think the relationship would have been more relate-able had she some redeemable qualities, however perhaps that is the point. Their love exists because....it does, there doesn't need to be another point.
Yes, I am THAT MUCH of a hopeless romantic.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

Well do you have TBS? I've grown to associate Gump with it because it's literally on there once a week. It just fits as a movie that's always airing on tv and you have a comfort zone with rewatching 20-30 minute sections here and there if there's nothing better to do. Gump is like the ultimate cable movie IMO.

Anyways this has all distracted from the definitive point

Button is just a boring, lifeless, unwatchable movie. I'm stealing a joke from Bill Simmons: It's The Curious Case of the SNOOZE Button!

no? well... alright

Heh. kinda funny.

It wasn't boring though. I was never bored, just never excited. It's more bland than boring.

Seven - Male psychotic killer.
Fight Club - Male terrorists. Father abandonment issues.
Button - No real antagonist, maybe Button's father, an abandoner. Ben abandons.
Panic Room - Home invaders a troupe of males. Yoakam is vicious. Father abandons again.
Alien 3 - ? We at least know they were not queen aliens. Isolated vicious male prisoners.
The Game - Not applicable.
Zodiac - Male killer(s). Father abandonment again. Female most rational/not obsessed character.

Shack's bashing went from actually decent to downright lack of thought and can be summarized in one line: he just found the whole thing boring. Once again we are stuck without a good bashing.

Its at No.63 on IMDB and a frontrunner for many oscars. Seems like its well liked outside of some people here.

Not to mention, it's Ben Lyons' choice for best movie of the year.

Clearly, some of us need to get a clue about what is and is not good.

He also hates men, though. I'm pretty sure he's a misanthropist.

I'm starting to think Benjamin Button is him flipping off the audience and saying "Oscar bait? I'll show you Oscar bait!"

Not really what I meant. Im just pointing out the very widely diverging opinion on this film.

If anything the anti-Button attack in this thread stems from the high expectations this film had.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Here's the final line in Seven from Freeman:

"Ernest Hemingway once wrote, 'The world is a fine place and worth fighting for.' I agree with the second part."

Best. Final. Line. Ever.

Except, despite the fact that he may not necessarily like his male characters, he still is interested enough in them to characterize. He has never given a female an adequate characterization. Well, I haven't seen Panic Room, but his abuse of women in Se7en, Fight Club and Zodiac, as well as his depiction of Daisy, all demonstrate his prejudice.

I think you should see Panic Room then. The film has not one but two strong female characters.

Yes. Seriously, Fincher being accused of sexism is about the stupidest thing yet I've heard in the new year. Except my tenants upstairs having the balls to tell me to lower the volume of a movie at 8 at night.

It's snack. I think he accused Gloria Steinem of hating women.
