I just wanted to know how people feel about dowloading songs and movies and other material off the net. I don't mind so much old literature because its already in the public domain, but the rest of it?
Downloading movies off the net isn't really much different than recording off of TV. Same with recording music. The thing is, when it's new, that's the only opportunity that it will ever have to sell big to the masses, so when the masses are stealing it, they are hurting the industry. If somebody records something off of a friend, at least somebody paid for it. I was never big on owning copies, as I preferred to buy the whole package myself.
I don't really get into downloading from sources off the net. I did tell Lecter to download Million Dollar Baby, but I also told him to pay to see it when it comes out, so that's not so bad.
I won a copyright infringement lawsuit, and it's not a good feeling to know that somebody took your original work without asking, and it's an even worse feeling to know they were selling it in a commercial venue that you didn't approve of.
On the other side, it's thing like this that keep prices down. If it wasn't for the threat of illegal downloading seriously hurting the industries, I can only imagine the prices that the crooks at the music and movie companies would be charging us. There are some benefits to it for us, so I don't really make too big of an issue about it, but I prefer to pay for stuff, not just help myself.
