The Philadelphia Story- 9/10

K.Hep's performance is really something to behold. I don't grow tired of this movie. The whole ensemble is brilliant.

Matador- 8/10

Pedro's filmography is really such a box full of surprises. This movie grabs you with all its wonderful weirdness. It's great to see Carmen Maura show up in what seems like almost every other Almodóvar picture and the young Antonio Banderas is quite nice on the eye. The performances are perfectly stated and as always the movie is full of great visual touches. Definitely one I'll rewatch eventually.

Wendy and Lucy - 9

This is really a great, great film. Shame Michelle Williams is pretty much being ignored for her performance here. And the Security Guard, not sure if his name was ever mentioned, I don't think it was. Anyway, great supporting role. And while the film isn't even 90 minutes, I felt it did drag just a little in the beginning, first 15 minutes or so. Only real complaint if I had to name one.

Polergeist

I suppose it was much more effective back in its day, and you can see a lot of cool Spielberg touches throughout, but there are far too many unintentionally funny moments (everyone loses their shit so easily, that short-ass woman with the weird voice was ridiculously placed, etc.) for it to amount to much. This was that rough '80s transition period to the modern VFX age. Some, like Ghostbusters, survived. This is an example of something that didn't quite make it.

the good the bad the weird - the director of a tale of two sisters tries to mimic both old fashioned hollywood action adventure yarns and leones dollar trilogy and falls flat on his nose - you cant copy the three-way finale from GBU after staging a 30 minute desert chase (lifted directly from indy 3). learn how to pace your films, man! there are still a few inspired moments here and there, but the guy aint no spielberg...

Bad Santa

A funny, offbeat Christmas movie, but it relies too heavily on profanity and the continuous this-guy-is-a-lowlife gag to be great. And I dunno... I thought the way they made that kid overly stupid and gross was kinda mean. But hey, I laughed. Most of the time. B-

There's no such thing as relying too much on profanity!

I really like the Harold and Kumar movies. The first one was especially funny because, I mean, it takes place in Jersey. I watched it right before my failed move out there, too.

Anyways, I just saw All About Eve for the first time ever. I actually really liked it, especially the way Eve works the blackmail plot in. I haven't seen many Bette Davis movies, actually only What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, so it was very odd to see her as the 'good' character in a movie. Unexpected. I thought Margo Channing would be a nasty character, and she actually really wasn't. I thought the dialogue was fantastic too, with all the entendres about life and performance. Very whitty, well shot, good pacing, acting, etc. Highly recommend it.

Any movie that manages to make Bush a cool character has done a killer job in my book.

Quote:
Margo Channing: Lloyd, honey, be a playwright with guts. Write me one about a nice normal woman who just shoots her husband.

Quote:
Lloyd Richards: What makes you think either Miller or Sherwood would stand for the nonsense I take from you? You'd better stick to Beaumont and Fletcher! They've been dead for three hundred years!

Margo Channing: ALL playwrights should be dead for three hundred years!

What did you make of the Birdie character? Isn't she a sweetheart?

haha, that's awesome. It seems to sort of not be something that you would like, but then it does. The movies must be among the ones I found funniest this decade.
