 Re: Step Brothers
This movie has had such a polarized reaction among people I know. Some are calling it one of the funniest movies they've ever seen, and some are calling it one of the stupidest, least funny movies they've ever seen.
I feel like this is the supreme example of having to be in the right mood for a certain type of comedy for it to work.

 Re: Step Brothers
Solid laughter mixed with off-key moments, and sometimes akward worked in their favor (heavily in their favor), but sometimes it didn't; I for one was not a fan of the Dale/Derreck's wife sexual jokes B+ or 7 out of 10

 Re: Step Brothers
The movie definitely tries to maximize vulgarness. That said, it's got a lot a great scenes. Both leads are hilarious, and the ending is actually pretty awesome.

Good film, with a few very funny scenes in it. The dinner scene where the parents are announcing their divorce is funny as hell B

 Re: Step Brothers
Totally hilarious but also completely forgettable. I forget most of the jokes now, a morning after watching it.
I do remember that I felt trying to squeeze a plot in at the end, when the film up until that point relied on (and was successful at) random sketches and skits, was pretty awkward and ruined the wonderful randomness. But most of the film was suitably nonsensical.
This year's Hot Rod, Talladega Nights, or Anchorman.

 Re: Step Brothers
STEP BROTHERS - 5/10 (C-) or 4/10 (D+)
A pretty bad and annoying comedy with few laughs to be found. I would have been dead-set on a 4/10 (D+) but the finale was decent and is making me consider a 5/10 (C-), which feels a little too generous. I'd heard it was terrible from everyone I know who had seen it, but I was still expecting something better than this.

I don't know if it was because I didn't get it or I simply hate R-rated comedy. But I didn't laugh, not even once. Really. D

Luckily, for others of us it does elicit a laughter response, and we are postively stimulated by the experience. Yee haw. Like Waiting For Godot...

 Re: Step Brothers
Easily the worst of the three R rated comedies. Tropic Thunder- A- Pineapple Express- B- Step Brothers- C- Might be a grade better or lower (C or D+)
It was alright for the first like 50 minutes and then it became repetitive, unfunny and dragged too long and since we grade movies for the whole that they are not just snippets it fails to impress. It was way too long like I just said for a comedy with no real idea of where it's going. It's basically such a simple plot that they had so many ridiculous scenes in it which were very hit and miss. Didn't do it for me at all. Too much slapstick. Idiotic sleepwalking and second fight among other retarded, not funny scenes. Blah. Won't watch it again. Worse than Anchorman as well. Totally despised Derek's wife, who looked like a whore more than anything else. Ferrell's mother's character was badly written as well. Whatever.

 Re: Step Brothers
a misfire. It felt like McKay/Ferrell/Reilly were going, "Wow, people really like this type of stupid-man humor that made Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and FunnyOrDie hits. Let's make a movie with characters even stupider than that!" Some of the time, it worked, and that whole ending sequence was hilarious. But overall, my god how forced it all felt. Ferrell has done a few too many performances as the loud idiot character. He needs to move on from that; he's a pretty talented guy. If it didn't have those few incredible moments, it could've been a disaster.
C+
As a character in a far superior summer '08 film would say, "you never go full retard."

Even though I enjoyed Step Brothers, I agree. Playing a man-child is something Ferrell has already done, and he had it perfected not in this R-rated outing, but in the squeaky-clean Elf. After seeing just how great he was in Stranger than Fiction, I'd hate to see him end up playing the man-child role for the rest of his career, as has happened to Adam Sandler outside of a more serious role every few years.

This movie gets everything right except for the funny, which is sadly missing. I mean, I dont even want any of the script or anything to change...but like, it should have been funny. : (

 Re: Step Brothers
On the other hand, the Wine Mixer scene almost, almost, makes this a four star film. That's somewhere between 2.5 and 3.5 stars for that part alone.

 Re: Step Brothers
This was hilarious! Absolutely loved it. Best of the 2008 comedies (ive seen). Puts Tropic Thunder and Sarah Marshall to shame.
Its just damn funny throughout and has a bunch of classic lines and scenes. The wine mixer scene is bloody brilliant.
Grade; A

 Re: Step Brothers
Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly really pull off the kid in an adult body concept well. Its a big joy ride from start to finish and with alot of classic scenes added, Step Brothers is one of the better comedies of 2008. The supporting cast, including Richard Jenkins, are great and make the film all the more enjoyable. It's a great night movie to get laughs off of. B+
