Nah. 175m+ OW. A multiplier of just 2? Because I really don't see it making more than $250 million... I think you meant 350m And yes...I see a low multiplier. Probably 2.0-2.1 for a total around 360m. HP1 adjusted will probably be around 425m by then, and I see this getting about 85% of HP1 tickets, which would be 360m. Also, I'm predicting a 75m OD. Yes, $350 million : ) A $75 million opening day? Nahhh.... a 27% increase over the current record?!

A $75 million opening day? Nahhh.... a 27% increase over the current record?! If it opens on summer start, then I think it has the capablity to do it. Inflation and increase theater/screen count both help it a lot. And then add the fact that this is probably going to have more hype than SM3. The only factor that may hurt this film is if the first part is not liked by fans. As long as that is recieved well, this is shattering OD and OW. But will it have that much more anticipation than Revenge of the Sith?

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
I'm with Corpse on this one. A May release date would do it no good as a steep decline would ensue with no holiday weekdays to fall back on. Early July would be great for it - especially with no Transformers breathing down its neck - like OotP which basically did $300m anyway.
Before the split - I was predicting a 2010 Potter 7 doing $350-$375m. Now Im thinking $310-$350m for each one. Still not sure if the 2nd will do better or worse than the first. Both Pirates and Matrix trilogies suggest the second will do worse even though its the epic conclusion.

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
If Prince Caspian does well in May, I don't think Shrek 4 would be a serious threat really. Shrek the Third failed to receive 3 multiplier despite opening the weekend before Memorial Day Weekend. Yes, it did have Pirates opening just a week later so that was a big reason, but still, just over a 2.6 multipler for Shrek? The legs of Shrek the Third, the poor reviews, and the awful DVD sales suggest Shrek 4 could fall below 300M, and I think it probably will. If Prince Caspian can gross something near the first Narnia, or more, I don't think Shrek would be a major threat and the reverse would the bigger talking point.
Though I would like to see Narnia take the Pirates July spot.

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
There's alot of money to be made at Christmas though so it should do some decent numbers. Personally I think its better off in Feb/Mar/April - like Sin City.

Bad release date. I expect a 150 million drop. Terrible move. That's what happens when studios get confident about their product, and think that moviegoers will see their films in droves any time of year. Night At The Museum's May move was risky, as was Narnia's. This move is just plain ridiculous.

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
Yeah thats a silly move. I guess outside the holiday season and summer - March is considered the next big launching spot for a big animated/kids film (thanks to Ice Age, Horton etc). Being a sequel it should still open well enough but a it wont get much further than $120-$130m

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
I cant believe the Love Guru still hasnt moved. I'd say they are better off moving to the Hancock weekend as that is rated R and is the only wide release. Plus the weekend after it is rather weak.
Also I didnt realise Tropic Thunder is coming out so late in the summer and is up against Clone Wars. That could go either way.

Oh boy, really really stupid move for Alvin. Seriously, the holiday season was the main reason for the first film's success!

March is also the month the family films from the Winter are fading away, and there isn't more until the Summer, so the market is empty when it comes to family films. So a big family film should do fairly well in March, I think Ice Age and Horton are great examples. So maybe it's a good move since it will likely see a sharp decrease, and would be overwhelmed against stronger event and family films during the Winter. So a Spring release means little to no competition.

Horton would have made $180+ million with Alvin's release date in December, so...

I am not at all shocked that it's being released less than three weeks before the general election. Probably a smart marketing move.

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
I was looking at the future schedule. Is it me or is it like locked that TF2 will win next year and will likely be like ROTS in 2005 and DMC in 2006, being the only huge event film next year???
X-men Origins will be in the same situation as Iron Man. No big movie for almost 2 months and decent competition. However I see instead a gross of 75/200 million.
Next Memorial day will be weird with a Terminator spinoff and a Christmas film. I don't know what will happen.
However to me the only very hyped film and prehaps the first event film does not appear till the end of June!!
Transformers 2 is easily set to knock down spiderman 3 record.... It will have lots of attention as it there will be only smaller films grossing max 40 million in their first weekend.
My basis is simple, what is its competition and really to me 2009 seems to be a sequel free year. We saw this in 2005-2006 and this usually lead to a lot of sub 300 million films but then one film breaking out getting close to 400 million.

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
True there will be a lot of 200 million grosses next year. No doubt about that, but there will not be an event film (250 million +) in May....
However imo, the only film with a chance to make over 250 million before July is Transformers 2 next year...
The hype will be massive, the market will be quite open and it will face Ice age 3.
I see around 135-150 million opening weekend with a gross about 330-380 million domestic.
I don't know about that Disaster film called 2012.
