Give me some remade invasion films I can judge it against and I will reconsider my grade!

Start with War of the Worlds I guess. Does it have to be remakes? Does it have to be modern?

ID4, Signs, Invasion of the Body Snathers, The Thing, The Blob, Men in Black, Mars Attacks, The Arrival, Contact, Species, Close Encounters, They Live, ET,...

Hmm...

War of the Worlds had better suspense... and better effects/action.

But this had better acting and I liked this storyline better.

So... I gave WotW an A...

I'll stick with B+

Are you fucking kidding me? I haven't seen this yet, but i thought Cruise and Fanning gave spectacular performances. Actually the acting is my favorite part of that movie and probably the best acting in any end-of-the-world movie ever!

Are you kidding me?

Fanning gave one of the WORST performances I've ever seen from a child actor. She was HORRIBLE.

Cruise was the ONLY standout in the movie.

I didn't like it.

Reeves was the only thing I liked because he is a badass.

5.5/10

Post Re: The Day the Earth Stood Still [2008]
Really didn't like this one much. I was already hesitant because I'm a big fan of the original film, which this really looked nothing like from the trailers. But the biggest problem is how big of a bore this is. The first hour is completely uninteresting and devoid of any tension or suspense, and drags like there's no tomorrow. It picks up steam during the final act but again loses focus during the almost-ridiculous finale/epilogue. The writing here is really awful and manipulative, and almost every character is underdeveloped. Keanu Reeves is the definition of one-note, Jennifer Connelly is very good and proves she's above this material, Jaden Smith delivers one of the single most annoying performances of the year by far. But what bothered me the most about this film was that two of television's finest and most talented actors - Kyle Chandler and Jon Hamm - were given NOTHING to do here. I was especially disappointed with how little Hamm was featured, considering the character he plays is fairly important in the original film. The brilliant Kathy Bates gets a bit more screentime but really fails to make an impression. Anyways, I didn't find it repulsive or anything but it's certainly not a good film - pretty much the definition of the word pointless. C/C-

One thing that really bothered me as well: if those silver locust things could pretty much eat through ANYTHING (as exhibited by the stadium being destroyed, people dying, etc.) and were going to be the cause of the human race dying out in the first place, how did they manage to avoid them by simply hiding under a bridge at the end?

I read the above review, and I just don't understand how such an explicitly detailed negative written section ever matches up with the letter grade?!?

...and people make fun of my grading system...

It's not on the same level as the films I've given D grades to this year (including The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Mirrors, etc.) At least certain aspects of it had merit.

Its like a motorway.

It gets you from A to B, doesn't take to long and is sleep inducing in its bland featurelessness,

A big fat meh.

B

Though i'm not quite sure if that grade is tainted or not.

I loved the story. Loved the premise. Even loved keanu

i'm not totally sold on the execution. its not that i found the execution bad .... it was just .. bland. looking back though, i can't actually pinpoint any specific thing that i truly hated.

ugh what a boring fucking film. 0 action. Script was bad. I liked the idea they were going for until the end where they hit you over the head with it.

Did people really expect a lot of action from this??

Hahaha I told you guys long long time ago that this movie will have maximum 3 explosions or cool CGI moment. I mean the old TDTESS movie hardly had any action so naturally this wasn't going to have much.

Anyways I liked the movie for the first 60 minutes but i didn't like the last 30 minutes as it was extremely rushed. The climax wasn't all that good too. I was really really hoping they would do the whole speech thing but ah well. Maybe they edited stuff badly hence resulting in a rushed last 30 minutes.

Still it was pretty decent. B

It's really hard to make a film like Sphere look and sound exciting. Congrats TDTESS.

See, I thought this movie was boring, but at least it wasn't actually laughably-bad-makes-me-want-to-kill-myself like Sphere.

I never understood all this Sphere hate. :er:

F for Fucking awful. quite possibly one of the most boring disaster films in the past decade. oh and people who gave this an A or B weren't really paying attention. John Cleese nearly died of boredom.

For one, if you didn't get the point of the movie, the next movie with a point
will have to hit you over the head for you to understand. It doesn't get much
simpler.

Two, this movie is WAY better than Sphere. Sphere was one of the worst
adaptations from a book I've ever seen (possibly the only worse adaptation I've
seen is Eragon, though The Lost World was pretty bad too, at least that had
dinosaurs to save it).

B for the acting and effects, and + for the message of the movie and the plot.

B+

An actual sphere has more point than this lame remake...
