Red Cliff is doing very well in Japan.

Wall-E will be released next month. Though I wouldn't get my hopes up that it'll do very well. Probably best to assume an average opening and an average final gross. Indy is the only Hollywood film that has made over 50M this year, thanks to it's big opening. But Indy ended up having pretty meh legs.

Since this is basically a Miyazaki thread, can someone recommend me which of his movies to see?
And in what order I should see them? Haven't seen any but plan to get them this winter and watch them by year's end.

I'd start with the old school 'Zaki - - Totoro and Kiki - - they're the ultra classics (...and add Panda, Go Panda if you wanna see some of his roots)...

...then on to the modern mindblowing with Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away...

Then ya can finish up with Howl's Moving Castle, Nausicaä, Castle in the Sky, and Porco Rosso, and the rest of the lesser Miyazaki...

Id have to go with Mononoke and Spirited Away being last if only because seeing the others after those two would probably result in slight disappointment maybe.

Using this logic, I'd save Totoro for last - - it's Miyazaki's one perfect movie - - it's on my all-time top ten list...

It's one of three (soon to be four, Miyazaki + Little Mermaid) perfect Miyazaki films I think you mean. :p

Wall-E had a solid debut.
Red Cliff is becoming a big hit, 50M will happen very soon.
Suspect X is yet another big hit film for Toho this year at just over 50M after 10 weeks in the Top 10.

Can't find a number for Ponyo. 153M as of 4 weeks ago though, might be around 160M maybe? Will update when/if I find smething.

Okay start for WALL-E. With some luck it'll make $20-25 million.


Red Cliff is really very big.

Yeah, the story of Three Kingdoms is big in Japan (they have an entire franchise of PC games based on it).

Yeah, the downward trend for Hollywood films doesn't look like it's letting up anytime soon. Ratatouille grossed 33M, and doesn't look like Wall-E can beat it.

Recent Pixar in Japan :

Wall-E - Probably something like Lecter projected, though it's hard to say.
Ratatouille - 33M
Cars - 12M (Heh)
The Incredibles - 50M
Finding Nemo - 102M
Monsters Inc - 74M

Japan is obviously jealous.

It's so sad. The Japanese box-office used to be so exciting... :-/

With strong dollar I am wondering how low HP6 can go. I am thinking 50M can happen.

HP6 should cross 50M without too much trouble.

The Box Office in Japan isn't weak though. Toho had their biggest year ever in 2008.

BO has been weak for hollywood. We have not had a 50M grosser.

But I was wrong about dollar. At least against yen, it has lost significantly over 6 months. That should help potter for sure.

Indy IV grossed just over 50M this year.

What to look forward to in 2010 (First-Half):





Studio Ghibli is releasing a new film next summer, Karigurashi no Arrietty (The Borrower Arrietty), being directed by Hiromasa Yonebayash. It will be Hiromasa's debut as a director. He had previously worked as an animator on Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea.




The third installment in the Bayside Shakedown series, a popular tv drama will be released next summer. Bayside Shakedown 2 became on of Japan's biggest films of all time, earling approx. $165m (17.4b yen) during the summer of 2003.




Pokemon the 13th Movie will be released on July 10th, 2010. The series remains as popular as ever in Japan, with the annual films consistently making the Top 10, earning around $50m.




The crew behind Love and Honor (2007's 9th biggest film) are back with Hana No Ato (After the flowers), based on the Shuhei Fujisawa novel, most famous as the writter behind Twilight Samurai. In the feudal Japan, the daughter of a samurai decides to avenge his lover, who was forced to commit suicide after being framed by his clan’s leader. No release date has been announced yet.



Solanin, based on the award winning manga of the same name, tells the story of two friends in college who don't know what to do with their lives as they work together through life's unpredictable turns. The live-action adaptation will be released in April.




Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland has been receiving a significant amount of buzz 4 months before it's release date. It currently ranks at the 9th most popular film on the popular entertainment site, Eiga. The film will be released on April 14th, 2010.



Liar Game: The Final Stage film is set after the second television season based on the manga. In the story, a woman named Nao Kanzaki (Death Note's Erika Toda) is caught in a dangerous high-stakes competition known as "Liar Game," and a genius con artist named Shinichi Akiyama (Boys Over Flower's Shota Matsuda) comes to Kanzaki's aid. In the film, Kanzaki teams up with Akiyama and a former rival named Fukunaga for a final round. The film is set to be released on March 6th, 2010. Another popular tv drama adaptation. The genre is quickly becoming the biggest in Japan

Seems like pokemonomania was so long ago... For several years the crazyness was just huge here, but then suddenly died in the early 2000s. I find it remarkable that it's still so big in Japan after so many years.

It became the most successful animated series in 2008 when the 11th Movie pushed the series over 50b yen ($455m at the time). It's at about 55b yen now (or $500m+).

The only thing that lost it's popularity everywhere but Japan was the anime basically. The video games still sell just as much as they did 10 years ago worldwide, and is still the 2nd best selling video game franchise ever by a wide margin over 3rd place, but will likely never reach Mario for 1st.
