New Dates (from Coming Soon):
The Lucky Ones (Rachel McAdams film) - October 24, 2008

Pink Panther Deux - February 6, 2009 (from February 13, 2009)
The Ugly Truth (Katherine Heigl film) - March 3, 2009
Untitled Judd Apatow Comedy - July 31, 2009
Nottingham (Russell Crowe film) - November 6, 2009

Some interesting release date choices there.

Looks like Apatow comedies will become summer (and year round staples). Wonder what this one is?

Russell Crowe stakes out his usual November haunt - Nottingham could do very well with good marketing and some critical acclaim.

Valkyrie has been delayed from October to February 13 (President's Day Weekend).

That doesn't strike me as the greatest sign, considering it was already delayed once before.

eh thats not good. Its probably slightly better BO wise (should do minimum $80m) but not the greatest sign. Its been moved 3 times actually - June to Aug, Aug to Oct and then now. That means no Tom Cruise pic this year. Perhaps thats the intent.

Meh, but who knows, maybe the Oscars will remember it if it's:

1. Very very good

2. And makes loads of cash

Both is possible. With the cast and its release date, I see $100 million as locked. Looks like a release similar to Road to Perdition.

Yeah thats right - sounds good. Actually it sounds like it may be able to get some mass appeal and if it could do $150m+ - it may be remembered come oscar time. Then again - it may be a crowd pleaser not award fodder and Summer 09 isnt that congested so its not a bad release date. Perhaps a little too close to Transformers though.

July 2nd 2010 - The Last Airbender

Well it is a lice action movie based on the avatar cartoon but they have dropped the title avatar because James Cameron is the king of all directors.

Is the cartoon popular enough to warrant a live action adaptation?

We now have an official date for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I and it's November 19, 2010. So far, it's the only movie scheduled for that date.

Hopefully Part II doesn't go with the May release that has been mentioned. It really should go with early July. Though I could be wrong saying May isn't a good place for a Potter film, but I'm sticking by it right now. If it does end up in May, the weekend before Memorial Day Weekend would be the only place for it I think. Opening it on Memorial Day Weekend would destroy it's legs, and even if it opened to record breaking numbers, I think a 70%+ second weekend drop would happen followed by something near 60% it's third weekend.

Hm, though if Potter 7: Part II gets the first May release date, like Iron Man, hell, by that time, inflation and anticipation, I can see a $160+ million opening for it.

Nah. 175m+ OW.

A multiplier of just 2? Because I really don't see it making more than $250 million...

Perhaps, but it'd be dead before Memorial Day Weekend came around I think. And it would have awful weekdays and wouldn't be able to recover in time since summer weekdays would be at least 6 full weeks away. I really think opening before most schools were out really hurt Potter 3. And early May would give Potter 7:II basically no summer weekdays, or holiday breaks like with the NOV release dates.

I'm a little, well, I am picky when it comes to Potter, and being the last film is only going to make me more picky.

With a $160 million opening weekend, the legs won't even matter that much. I mean, Spider-Man 3 had pretty bad WoM and huge competition and all, but thanks to its huge opening still ended up with $335+ million and the #1 of its year.

So, I think either early May or November (which is the best time anyway).

I don't know if I would use SM3 as a comparison though. Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 had great legs, unlike the Potter films. They haven't had terrible legs or anything, but nothing over a 3X since the very first film. It's hard to say what Potter 5 would have ended up with since it opened on a WED, but I doubt it would have managed a 3X since it probably would have opened with something around 115/120. So what Im saying is that Potter is a frontloaded franchise, unlike the Spider-Man franchise (before the final film). So part II of the last Potter film would be extremely frontloaded.

And I'll still stick by the early July date being the best release for Potter since it distances itself away from the bigger summer films in May/June, allows the huge opening + Max Midnight sales, and allows summer weekdays.
