I loved how Yoshue summed up the 1951 version.
Anyways about this one, it about matched expectations. I really enjoyed it and I thought the story was great.

This one stunk to high heaven - - it's barely worth commenting on - - other than to say that this trite nonsense is amongst the worst movies I've seen in the past decade...

Re: The Day the Earth Stood Still [2008]
The definition of "average." And I might be a little generous, at that. I'll have to follow the consensus of "not terrible, just there," 'cause that's what it really is.
The special effects are decent, but hardly impressive. The plot generally sucked.
The highlight might have to be them casting Keanu Reeves for this role. Brilliant.
Just highly forgettable.

I pretty much agree with Zing on this one. Nothing is impressive about it, but I wouldn't say anything really stood out as terrible. The best part is that New Jersey is now gone forever.

http://chud.com/articles/articles/17390 ... Page1.htmlThis might just be one of the lowest scored reviews I've seen from a movie in a long time.. Is his review accurate and if not, should I simply wait for the DVD in seeing this??

IMAX it. And then don't see it on DVD.
That's my input.

Re: The Day the Earth Stood Still [2008]
I have just seen the original The Day The Earth Stood Still for the first time, and I can tell you it is smarter at every single turn. The screenplay was sharp as Gort's laser and the direction was as gripping as his manipulators. A classic old school philosophical a-list sci-fi! It is a thousand times better than the braindead remake ( easily)... I still can't believe that so many people in this thread are actually giving the new version a pass!?!?!

I probably gave it a pass because I had such low expectations for it. And the casting of Keanu as a monotone alien is genius.

BJs Grade:
C-
Appalling script, visuals were mediocre, its utter averageness saved it from totally sucking.

Poor Kathy Bates and John Cleese.
The + is for the two of them. The F, everything else.

This apparently got a C- from CinemaScore, which is difficult to achieve. I can't imagine legs being especially good, even with Christmas two weeks away.

Re: The Day the Earth Stood Still [2008]
What got me most was the complete lack of any action. Yeah, there was the nano-cloud thing during the final 7 minutes. But A), it didn't do anything worthwhile on screen. And B), there's an entire hour and 10 minutes beforehand of NOTHING.
It's really hard to make a film like Sphere look and sound exciting. Congrats TDTESS.

I'm telling you. IMAX it, and avoid the DVD. It's not worth the DVD.

The nano-cloud ending was a a visual bore. There are the two helis that crash in the woods and the two drones that crash in Central Park. And that's it. Lame, even by December sci-fi standards.

To each his own. you're usually right about films like this, so I don't know, maybe you were having an off night? Did your girlfriend give you a handjob during the landing sequence because that could account for some of the praise.

Re: The Day the Earth Stood Still [2008]
Hah!
Maybe because it was free and in IMAX...
I still think B+ is a fair grade...
But I just don't know anymore!!!

But I just don't know anymore!!! This is what I do to determine if a grade is fair. Think of other films in the genre and weigh those grades against whatever film you've just viewed. If you feel this remake is better than other alien invasion films you've seen, then yes, your B+ is fair. If you went insane for a moment (which appears to be the case) and meant to give it a C-/D+ because it's not even in the 3rd tier of alien invasion films, then so be it.

But I just don't know anymore!!! Enjoyment is enjoyment - - if you found the movie to be good, no one can take that away from you (I say this from my own frequent experience with being out of step with KJ opinion)...
