Re: What's the most beautiful city you've been to?
tough question.....
I think St. Petersburg takes it for me though... just an amazing city. Moscow is crap compared to it.
Love Bruges as well, but pretty small so cannot really compare it to other major cities.
I don't know.... I love Paris' architecture and feel of the city, but it is too packed and not a big fan of the people. Plus I don't think La Defense fits in well....

The most fun I had in Italy was visiting Pompeii and walking along Cinque Terre.

Rome, Paris
As a guy so interested about Roman history, you could see why I pick Rome.
I was young then around 11, I plan to return and fully appreciate the history.

Rome is amazing. Some of the sights and the overall mood gave me chills at time. 2nd Place for me is Lisbon, but only if you speak Portuguese and aren't scared of this one gypsy who follows you selling you drugs every 5 Minutes.

Paris is pretty ugly outside of the landmarks. The whole place smells of urine. I find it comical when people slate Paris for being "ugly outside of the inner circle". I'm not sure if its just me, but generally, every single European city ive been in has places of incredible beauty which is always flanked on its outskirts by places of extreme poverty. It's part and parcel of their nature. It just happens that Paris' places of extreme poverty are more on show for those driving into the city than say, London's. Nearly every single major European city has its share of dank, ugly areas. They are never publicized, but they do exist. Milan is probably one of the worst cities in that sense. It tries to seduce you with glamour but fails to tell you that it's sort of an industrial hell-hole. Paris' beauty is more or less contained to the "old city", but the same can be said for dozens of major European destinations.

Re: What's the most beautiful city you've been to?
Levy, I have heard a million fantabulous things about Toronto. I'm obsessed with it. It is the sleeper-cell of all times. But I have heard nothing about its cityscape, like, ever! For me? ROME! Sienna Assisi Chicago Edinburgh Boston/Cambridge Santa Fe Lisbon Tel Aviv Cortona Amsterdam Seville These are not in any particular order except for Rome, which is absolutely #1. Madrid would be up there too except for I got utterly robbed there for the first time ever, and that slightly skewed my opinion of it. Does Lincoln, NH count? Its not technically a city, but I love the White Mountains so, so, so much.

Re: What's the most beautiful city you've been to?
Probably depends on your focus. There are so many different types of things you could consider beautiful about a city.
I'd just go with beaches and mountains. The Denver region and Southern California, especially around Huffington/Laguna Beaches.

As far as physical beauty, I would have to say Victoria, British Columbia. So pretty there.

It's hard to beat Paris.
Though I'll say New York gives it a run for its money.
I haven't been much places, though.

Haven't done much travel due to cash/youth/agoraphobia.
Cordoba looks stunning, though.

Re: What's the most beautiful city you've been to?
I live in Toronto and its not one of the most beautiful cities.
Its quite a urban mixmash up graffiti, exposed wires and poles full of papers and hobo's begging everywhere for money.
However it easily makes up in its vibrancy, diversity and there are very beautiful parts in the middle of the city (Midtown)
Rome is great with its history. You see the heart of Catholicism and all of those buildings and then you see all of the Roman Buildings. Its a historian "wet dream"....

Cordoba looks stunning, though. Its charming, but tiny. You should go if you ever get the chance, but only for a day trip. Stay in Seville and just jump a bus for the day. Beware of the evangelical pamphlets handed to you when you go see Mezquita. I was, like, "Wth?," when I visited this past summer.

There's beauty in the symmetry of the city, let alone the wonderful landmarks and history. Bruges is also very beautiful. More so than how it comes across in In Bruges.

Re: What's the most beautiful city you've been to?
Siena and Assisi are gems. I love late-Medieval cities, though, more than Renaissance ones. The Church in Assisi is not to be missed, nor is just hanging out in the main palazzo in Siena. I absolutely loved those two cities more than any of the other ones (except Rome of course) that I have visited in Italy.
And, no that is not the experience I had in Amsterdam! I just really liked the canals. We went in winter (this was nearly a decade ago, so things might be different now). Amsterdam's canals put Venice to shame I tell ya! I found the colorful houses lining the water pathways to be very pretty too. Plus, I saw a windmill! I had a Dolcinea moment.
For cities that I haven't seen but am dying to, Istanbul is way on top. I waaaaaaaaant to go there.

Re: What's the most beautiful city you've been to?
I went to both Venice and Amsterdam a few years back and the Amsterdam canals are definitely better, cleaner, wider. The area near Anne Frank's house in particular is nice. And Ive been told other areas where we tourists dont venture are even prettier. Though the non canal part of the city isnt all that flash but the place has a great buzz.
Venice was raining when I was there and the smell is probably worse at that time. Look at Venice now though aggg submerged.

Siena and Assisi are on my must see list. I also love medieval cities/history. Read about/seen docos about Assisi and the church there/St Francis etc.
