I wouldn't be happy with a lot of that. I'm just not in love with Slumdog. It's not even Danny Boyle's best work. And what's with Defiance? crap picks, slumdog is going to be mawled by TDK.

Yeah, the only way it is winning is if it's as big as Juno or something crazy like that from the public. And its box office has been good, but not that good. This is TDK vs. Ben Button with Milk being a dark horse, and I don't see that changing.

If Slumdog can make say, $50-60 million by the end of February, I'd say that definitely puts it in easy contention for the win.

Didn't work for Sideways, Little Miss Sunshine, or Juno, and arguably those films had more passionate fans (certainly for the first and last two).

Re: Well...the 2008 Contenders Discussion Thread
Slumdog doesn't feel like the BP to me. It's too ... small. I mean there's a difference between Crash coming out of nowhere and Slumdog doing it. Crash had the biggest cast of its year and had the "racism! important! LA!" aura. I can't give the academy credit enough to give BP to a fantasydrama in India centered around a kid on a game show, with no actors and directed by "coming off 28 Weeks Later/Sunshine/28 Days Later/The Beach, and officially way too cool for Oscar" Danny Boyle.
I think until further notice it's Benjamin Button and Milk, with TDK kind hanging on the "is it or is it not??? Dhun dhun dhun!!!" sidelines. I could see Doubt or Revo. Road or Milk if it falls out of the top early = The Queen/Capote/Ray/whatever. Frost/Nixon and Gran Torino = The assholes of the race nobody wants in.

Slumdog could get noms for cinematography, editing, song... It lacks the star power of those movies, but then that could always add to its charm.

Slumdog is basically a foreign language film. There's a heavy use of Hinglish or outright subtitles.
Quick! Last one to win BP was...

It doesn't matter when the film doesn't have any real "Best Picture" vibes, though. Sideways was my #2 of 2004, but that didn't have any at all. Even Crash felt more exclamatory. The film may be good enough to win or cool enough, but it doesn't really encompass a real feeling in the country right now. Not the film's fault, but more of a case of being ahead of its time perhaps. Maybe when the chaotic-cultural-fusion-in-developing-world-vibe hits the country eventually, which it will.

Communism, costume epic. And Bertolucci was overdue for a long time at that point. And it actually doesn't have a huge amount of Mandarin in it.

Someone mentioned this earlier (O?), but with Obama heading into office, I think the Academy could feel a lot cheerier than usual, and Slumdog seems to be a very hopeful film, with enough international flavor to make the average viewer feel good about themselves loving it.

Re: Well...the 2008 Contenders Discussion Thread
Yeah but its true box office potential has yet to be determined. If history holds true, Curious Case and Australia should grab most of the headlines out of the Golden Globe noms. Milk appears to be the real indie powerhouse and it will definitely have multiple GG noms thanks to acting cats. And we don't even know what effect the recent events will have on the film.

Wouldn't Milk fit the "hope" vibe more? At least that would have some darkness in it, because the economy is still in the shitter and the mess the Reagan era left us is still going to ebb and flow even while being cleaned up.

That reminds me: will Australia get in for BP in the Globes? Bobby did, and it's a very Globesy film, but the voting is still going on if I'm correct, nobody seems to love it and it'll just scrape by on not being a financial fiasco because of the international market.

Bertolucci was far from your standard Oscar director. He had been nominated for The Conformist (As a screenwriter, like Boyle for Trainspotting) and Last Tango in Paris, but Tango was a VERY divisive and controversial film. I'll give the Costume angle (It DID win eight other Oscars), but it was still a very foreign affair (And Slumdog still has a lot of English from my understanding?), and is one of only two films (The other being another fairly foreign film - Gandhi!) to win despite being the second lowest grossing nominee.

Oh, I never thought it was in trouble, especially because of the category split. Watch them put Slumdog in Best Musical or Comedy .

Biopics have generally lacked the "oomph" to get a win unless it's a hit with audiences (A Beautiful Mind) or just too strong to deny (Schindler's List). Milk would need to show it's not just an art house movie, which is a lot harder for it than Slumdog. Though I can see a scenario where it wins Screenplay, Actor, Director and Picture. I'd at least give it better odds of winning than TDK at the moment.

Speaking of TDK, I guess they're waiting until the last minute to announce the rerelease details.
