Re: Well...the 2008 Contenders Discussion Thread
Meh I'd say Slumdog is probably just as not modern day as TDK. There's a fantasy/destiny! twist to it. TDK just has the characters and city made up.

Re: Well...the 2008 Contenders Discussion Thread
I think with the election, a feel good movie is going to make a serious run for best picture. As big as TDK was, I think an uplifting film like Slumdog could pull an upset. They'll give Ledger best supporting actor to reward TDK, but I'm not sure if they'd give the Oscar to yet another dark film at a time where "change and hope," seem to be the trend..

("Forrest Gump" was popular with the Academy and there are some parallel's here). But, as I was telling a friend today, for a much more striking and beautiful marriage of technology and ideas, I'd encourage folks to watch "Wall-E" again. I keep hearing "wow" or "meh" for Button. Talk for Wall-E is picking up again, though.

I was trying to figure out how to word that into my post, but this is pretty good, and I totally agree. Also, awarding some "international" (An Indian setting/ensemble with a European director!) might look cool after the most international president ever was elected.

Re: Well...the 2008 Contenders Discussion Thread
Here we go: http://www.variety.com/article/VR111799 ... =3296&cs=1Quote: Aging is a theme that resonates with an Academy often criticized for its predilection toward the sentimentality of the subject ("On Golden Pond," "Driving Miss Daisy"). But Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth elegantly fused F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story with a decades-spanning love story, another favorite genre with voters (the Roth-written "Forrest Gump," "Reds"). It helps give "Button" a chance at a category-sweeping juggernaut, with Fincher on track to score his first Academy nomination.
At five nods with one win, Blanchett is fast becoming a yearly Oscar night fixture, and her Daisy is another full-bodied portrayal of sensuality and intelligence that wouldn't be out of place among leading actress turns of the '30s or '40s. One-time supporting actor nominee Pitt (for "Twelve Monkeys"), meanwhile, has an unusual role that fortunately plays to his strengths: love of character parts and brooding ambivalence about his beauty. It could mean his first lead actor nom. Strong supporting work from the lively Taraji P. Henson as Benjamin's adoptive mother Queenie, and last year's supporting actress winner Tilda Swinton as Ben's aristocratic first love could yield other noms.
A Fincher movie is usually a cause for technical celebration, and "Button" covers all the bases, from the sepia-to-spectrum richness of the visuals (Claudio Miranda) to the century tour of clothing styles (prior nominee Jacqueline West), and from the stunning New Orleans-based production design to the performance-capture-meets-makeup aging effects that put Pitt's wrinkled face on a shuffling, diminutive body.

Some changes in the BFCA score:
Milk - 92 Slumdog Millionaire - 91
And a new one:

Just came from Slumdog Millionaire.
It's solid for a Best Picture nomination. I can't say for the win though.

Blanchett will be nominated. Why don't I get tired of saying that?

How come there is still no review for Australia 10 days before its release?

Yeah, I was wondering about that too. Can't wait to see it though!

Re: Well...the 2008 Contenders Discussion Thread
So, if the current word on RR is echoed in coming weeks...
1. The Dark Knight 2. Slumdog Millionaire 3. Milk 4. Revolutionary Road 5. Australia 6. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
7. Doubt 8. The Wrestler 9. Frost/Nixon 10. The Reader
It seems we have 6 possibly 7 strong contenders again if both Australia and Button come through. I would not know which one to take out if it came to those 6.

Thirs review for Doubt: http://www.screendaily.com/ScreenDailyA ... ryID=41859I think that unless Winslet is a REAL stunner in Revolutionary Road (is she really going supporting for The Reader?) Streep kinda has this locked up...

Meanwhile, Happy-Go-Lucky is at 94% and 7.8/10 at RT: http://64.14.20.205/m/10009538-happy-go-lucky/I think Leigh is in contention for a Best Director nom. Right now I have him at #7 or so.

There are a few more reviews posted in AD's Doubt thread, and all of them have at least good inks.

A couple of Australia reviews popping up. One was pretty good (complains about length), other called it incredible.

Re: Well...the 2008 Contenders Discussion Thread
Variety's Revolutionary Road review is in http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117939 ... id=31&cs=1Generally positive, though he states it's more surface heavy in comparison to the layered, deep book. Dicaprio looks like a BA contender for sure, maybe for the win. Also says Michael Shannon delivers a "startling" standout supporting role, playing Bates' mentally insane son. Can probably count him in for that alone, heh.
