Oh, and Tony... don't make comparisons to Mario and Halo, unless you want Halo to fail horribly as a movie (or for Uwe Boll to direct it). The Mario movie is certainly no masterpiece, so a Halo movie like that would surely suck.
36 months is around the norm for films to be written, optioned, greenlite, preproduced, shot, chopped, locked, and distributed.
Obviously, with a large production like Halo, it could be rushed to make a specific date. But unless a studio has a particular weekend open that they a need a film like Halo for, I wouldn't expect the film to be rushed.

Psst: Tony, baba, the in-the-closet lovers, keep the PC vs. Console arguments in the video game forum. This is about the movies

You're comparing a low end car to a high end car here. A low end car usually wins car of the year not because its a better car but its innovative and a lot of other stuff that people don't expect off that category. I'm not calling halo low end at all .. i'm just syaing that its able to do things in a situation where no one had thought good things could come. I commend it for that. But thats it. It'll never be a lamborghini to me. But i'd still prefer buying a Civic.
Your analogy is whacked! If anything Halo is the high end car. As FPS'ers go, Halo was a behemoth when it came to pure production values and money spent in producing. If anything, Doom 3 was the Ford Pinto - low rent FPS.
Which is why a Halo movie will be so successful. It is the high end Ferrari of video games. Put out a Half Life movie and likely most people will yawn.
And, insomniacdude...I think the success of the video game is directly related to the movie. And, babs and I are not in the closet lovers...we've been out of the closet for a long time now. Get your facts straight!!!

Tony .. last I checked, ferraris sell less than hondas .. thats why civics sell more units ..
there was a thread recently .. what are the worst fanboys .... theres almost a possibility of combining these 2 together. cause its evident which fanboys i love to hate..
Anyhoo, back on topic.
So i was thinking ...
wouldn't it be almost orgasmic if we're all sitting in the summer at the theatre watching the previews, without any knowledge of what is to come
and you hear the Halo Theme and see the Master Chief show up....
..woah...

PC elitists/snobs?
And, yes as you pointed out the car analogy doesn't work because Halo (Ferrari) sells for the same price as Doom 3 (Civic), so it's hard to make the analogy unless Ferrari's were the same price as Civics... which would be cool!

Nah, that's a long period of time in this day in age.
You can get a film like Halo knocked out in 1.5 years, easily. Sequels are usually quicker.
No reason you shouldn't see this film in August 2006, which is when I would imagine them releasing something like this.

I would imagine a Memorial Day release, with shitloads of ads. August releases tend to have smaller openings and less leggy runs. There just isn't enough weekddays to power it through.

Well according to mary release dates don't mean anything anymore
I think a lot is going to depend on the picture. If they get an A-lister (director or actor), they could open it on Memorial day, but you know... if they had an a-lister at this point, they would be mentioning it. The chances of this being a huge budget mega-monster of a film are small. Like most video game films (I'm thinking like Doom and Resident Evil) it will appeal to a certain audience and be considered a little too chancy for a Memorial Day weekend.

Have you even seen the sales on the Halo franchise? I mean, I agree, it depends on the names they draw in, but even without a name they can easily draw in $100 million based upon the Halo name alone. As long as it isn't an insult to the game (a la Resident Evil) it will make money.
As for Doom, I think that it will do close to $100 million. Doom can be the ultimate action movie. I think it was a huge mistke to let Uwe Boll take the big seat, and the quality will be vastly diminished.
The problem with many video game movies is that it is never handled well. Studios fall into the same trap that audiences expect them: to approach the movie in a nonchalant way and not put the same craftsman into the movie that they did into the game. All that needs to happen is for one movie to break the mold. I don't want to say this will be it, but if they do land a good director, I'll definitely be seeing this with an optimistic approach.

Who says it isn't already written, optioned, greenlit and preproduced?! Someone could be pulling the wool over everyone's eyes! And... Bill Gates is starring in it!

Not sure how you came up with those numbers. 16 months easy, isn't very likely unless it's fast tracked.
There are a lot of factors in play so I wouldn't hold my breath Roo.
