I really liked this. I went in expecting a slightly better than average teen-sex comedy and was surprised to be treated to an almost over-achieving teen-sex comedy. Yeah its familiar and has a been there done that feel in parts. But it had me laughing my ass off and thats what this type of film should deliver and this delivers in spades. I'll agree with Magnus in that Mardsen and Green really elevate the film to another level. Green was awesome as a bitingly sarcastic Amish dude. Maybe the stars aligned or hell froze over but I'm giving this:

Grade A

I thought it was quite terrible, to be honest. It brought nothing new to the genre and the whole thing felt very cheap and dated. The two leads were likable enough but gave wooden performances, and the bulk of the supporting cast was terrible - save for Seth Green, who provides the film's only real laughs. I have no idea why James Marsden signed on for this, playing a role that Seann William Scott would have probably turned down ten years ago. It quickly became quite tiresome and I was beyond ready to leave once the end credits rolled. I'm surprised at the incredibly positive reception here. C-

A wonderful, witty, and original comedy. The three young stars who make up the main characters work great together. However, two of the supporting characters (James Marsden and Seth Green) really stand out and give alot of laughs. This is probably the best comedy of the year and deserves way more at the box office. Plus, how can you deny that donut.

A+

Meh.

It definitely has some pretty big laughs, and the direction is more sporadically creative than what you'd expect from a movie like this, but it's way way too long and has some seriously brutal dry stretches where you're just kind of left waiting for it to hurry up and get to its ultra-predictable climax.

Sweet, funny, dirty, smart...

...just what I'm lookin' for in a life partner comedy film!!!

This is easily the finest ROMCOM of the year - - beating out such admirable adversaries as Charlie Bartlett, Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day, Baby Mama, or even 27 Dresses.

Not only that - - it's the best comedy movie of any variety that I've seen all year. It's fuckin' brilliant.

There hasn't been a movie this outside since Beerfest, but it's hardly a fair comparison, because Sex Drive is so darn romantic!

Plus, no filmmaker's been wiillin' to party with the Amish like this, since the legendary Kingpin...

Completely took me by surprise, swept me off my feet, carried me to a queen-size bed, and ravished me like it was 1944 all over again.

Briliant, brilliant, brilliant - - watch this filmmaker - - remember his name.

Sean Anders.

It won't need a large font soon, you're just gonna know it.

Watch Sex Drive in it's first run - - you won't regret it. (Even, if you're swayed by the anti-hype, you can still wake up later in life and brag about it to yer grandkids when it's it's playing on TCM Golden Oldie Cult Classics in 2044...

99.999 out of 5.

Two additional points to add:

1. There's a short creepy/funny outtake after the final credits.

2. Rumspringa!!!

Here's a quote from the above review:
Quote:
As one of the most forgettable films of the year, "Sex Drive" will be remembered for its disgusting lack of respect for the American moviegoer's intelligence.

Heh. Duplicating this statement at the end of every low comedy movie review might work 9 out of 10 times - - unfortunately you got caught out this time. Reviewing a low comedy based on intelligence is an iffy proposition on it's own. Unless you're reviewing something like Waiting For Godot, a lot of humor appeals to our emotions as opposed to our intelligence. Further, I would say that it is almost a requirement of comedy to lack respect for our intelligence. Humor is designed to challenge our worldview and make us laugh at our own foibles, not just be some sort of polite reinforcement of our fragile egos.

I rarely review horror movies, especially low horror genre movies, because they simply do not work for me - - they don't make me scared. It is usually a waste of time for me to watch them, or to try and tell fans of the genre that it's a bad movie through a review, because these movies do work for many fans - - they make them scared. Same goes for low comedies. If you're not a fan - - if they don't make you laugh, I would suggest your time would be better spent writing reviews of films in a genre you enjoy, because in the case of Sex Drive you have made an egregious error. Far from one of the "most forgettable" films of 2008, it will be remembered and cherished by low comedy fans for generations to come.

So, when you lament in your post here at KJ, "Seriously Mr. Pink and JMovies... I am honestly not sure if we saw the same movie :( " - - that is literally true. You did not see the same movie. You watched this film through eyes and mind prejudiced against low comedy from the start. It did not make you laugh, therefore your review is moot...

SEX DRIVE - 8/10 (B+)

One of the best teen sex comedies in ages. It was really funny and cute, with charming leads. Amanda Crew is gorgeous and Josh Zuckerman is pretty cute. James Marsden delivers plenty of laughs in a supporting role. The fact that his overly-homophobic character didn't offend me but instead made me laugh is a feat in itself.

"Sex Drive" is a gem of its sub-genre, and one of the better comedies of 2008. It deserved to be a bigger hit, but I'm sure most, like I, thought it looked pretty bad. If it weren't for the surprisingly good reviews I would have passed, but I'm glad I didn't.

I ended up watching the rated version because the way the flipper disc had the Rated/Unrated versions labeled was confusing. I thought I'd put it on the Unrated side. I hear the story flows better with the Rated version, and that's probably true, but I'm still curious to see what was in the extra 20 minutes included in the Unrated version.

it steals way too much from similar and better movies (the main guy looks and acts exactly like Jason Biggs, James Marsden is an update of Stiffler, and the whole quest-for-sex thing is a little been-there, done-that), but the movie offers enough laughs to barely make up for it. The predictability of it all is annoying, but yeah, it's raunchy and funny, so I give it mild thumbs up.

It's ridiculously predictable, steals lots of things from other (and some better) teen films and a tad long, but...

It's really, really funny.

I liked it, and not for reasons I was expecting. It is funny, yes, but so much of the material is beaten to death throughout the movie. (For example, the bits from James Marsden and particularly Seth Green were funny the first time or two, but not any time after that.) As a comedy, it's hit or miss. What pushes it over and gets it a recommendation from me is the surprising depth put into the characters. It's not going to change the way movies are made, for sure, but the three main characters and the relationships they shared with each other felt authentic (something that can't be said for a lot of movies like this one), which made the movie worth its near 110-minute running time. It's worth a look.
