Post Re: Intl. Box-Office: Russian Kolchak is #1 of the weekend!
Kolchak did excellent numbers, but not quite record-breaking. It will become the current #1 of the year (unless WoM is terrible, but I kinda doubt that) and should pass $35 million, but how far really?

As expected Eagle Eye is performing rather well overseas, we're certainly looking at $200+ million worldwide.

A lot of films are crawling to benchmarks: You Don't Mess with the Zohan to $100 million, Get Smart to $100 million, Mamma Mia! to $400 million (well not crawling, but you get the idea), Hancock to $400 million...

Hellboy II: The Golden Army has already by far outdone the overseas number of the first Hellboy film and with Japan, France and Germany ahead, it should pass $80 million overseas with ease, more than doubling the first film's OS gross.

So, TDK will fall a bit short of 1 billion?

What would TDK be at? 989M or so?

Either way, the re-release will get it over 1B, no way WB lets it stop at 998/999 or something.

Wall-E saw a weak opening in Italy this past weekend. Not much more than 50% of Ratatouille, half of Kung Fu Panda.

Post Re: Intl. Box-Office: Russian Kolchak is #1 of the weekend!
""Eagle Eye" soared past rivals, collecting $12 million at 3,779 playdates in 49 markets to top a moderate frame at the international box office.

The Coen brothers’ dark comedy "Burn After Reading," Russian sensation "Koltchak" and family favorite "Wall-E" supplied most of the remaining box office firepower with combined grosses of $23 million. Domestic winner "Max Payne" shot down respectable foreign coin with $6.3 million at 1,305 in day-and-date launches in 32 territories, led by $1.26 million in Spain.

"Eagle Eye" scored its top grosses from its Japanese launch and its second South Korean sesh, both with $2.5 million, and Korean biz held impressively with a drop of just 8%. The actioner’s cumed $45.6 million in foreign markets in the middle of its offshore run.

The "Eagle Eye" victory meant that the foreign weekend winner has differed from the domestic leader in every session dating back to the final frame of July, when "The Dark Knight" took both crowns. That streak should end next weekend when Disney launches "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" day and date in 30 markets, including France, Germany, Spain and the U.K.

Expectations are sky high for "Senior Year," partly due to the sensational foreign performance by "Mamma Mia!" The tuner took in $5.9 million at 3,789 to become the fourth pic of 2008 — and 32nd of all time — to top $400 million in overseas box office.

Foreign grosses also will get goosed the following frame when "Quantum of Solace" begins its international launch ahead of its Nov. 14 domestic debut.

In the meantime, distribs are opting for targeted openings such as with "Burn After Reading," which continued to impress overseas with a first-place launch in the U.K. with $3.3 million. The George Clooney-Brad Pitt laffer held well in Spain, down 32% in its soph sesh to $1.7 million, and in Germany, off 5% to $1.6 million in its third frame.

"Burn," still early in its foreign run with about $30 million from 14 markets, could wind up being one of the few American comedies to see its foreign grosses top its domestic total (currently at $57 million). Sony’s "You Don’t Mess With the Zohan" achieved that milestone with $740,000 to boost the laffer’s foreign total to $100.8 million — making it the second Adam Sandler pic to hit the $100 million mark offshore, after "Click."

When they hit international multiplexes, most U.S. comedies fall short of matching their Stateside performance. For example, Par’s "Tropic Thunder" opened moderately in France with $1.8 million as part of a weekend that saw it score $4.1 million at 1,662 in 48 markets to lift its foreign cume past $60 million — still $50 million shy of the domestic total.

Sony’s "The House Bunny" has turned in mild numbers with $3.2 million at 1,375 in 37 markets for a $13.7 million cume — less than a third of its domestic total. "Get Smart" has totaled $99.4 million, or $31 million behind its domestic total.

By contrast, animated family fare’s often golden overseas, such as "Kung Fu Panda" with an eye-popping $418 million outside the United States. "Wall-E" scooped up another $7 million at 2,844 in 22 markets, led by a $3.8 million Italian launch, to push its foreign cume to $247 million — with Japan likely to push that total past $300 million when following its December debut.

In other highlights, last weekend’s leader "Koltchak" continued to impress with $8.2 million at 1,223 in Russia and the Ukraine. The epic, handled by Fox, has cumed $27.6 million.

And in Germany, action topped romance as moviegoers gave the edge to U’s opening of "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army" with $2.1 million over Warner’s launch of "Nights in Rodanthe" with $2 million including Ladies Night sneaks on Wednesday."

"Thanks to openings in seven territories during the weekend led by Japan and the U.K., DreamWorks/Paramount's thriller "Eagle Eye" ensnared an estimated $12 million from 3,779 screens in 49 markets, finishing No. 1 on the international circuit for the first time.

Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox's video game-inspired "Max Payne," the No. 1 film domestically, was fifth on the weekend overseas with $6.4 million from 1,305 screens in 32 mostly small markets. The action vehicle starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis premiered in first place in at least six of those markets and debuted at No. 3 in Spain with $1.3 million from 302 sites.

At No. 2 overall was "Burn After Reading," the Coen brothers' espionage satire, which opened in five new territories (three handled by Universal). Overall, its weekend take was an estimated $8.7 million, hoisting its overseas cume to about $30 million. Universal reports that the U.K. opening ($3.3 million from 396 sites) was the biggest boxoffice bow of any Coens title in the market.

Placing No. 3 for the weekend was Fox's release of the Russian-language "Admiral," director Andrei Kravchuk's historical drama that opened No. 1 internationally last frame. Playing Russia and the Ukraine, the historical drama tallied $8.2 million from 1,223 screens for a two-market cume-to-date of $27.6 million.

In fourth overall was Pixar/Disney's "WALL-E," which premiered at No. 1 in Italy, garnering $3.8 million from 250 locations for a robust per-screen average of $15,200. The weekend produced $7 million from a total of 2,844 screens in 22 markets for a resulting overseas cume of $247 million (compared with $221 million domestically).

Disney predicts that the animated title, 2008's ninth-biggest hit overseas, will overtake "Iron Man" (overseas cume: $254 million) and "Sex and the City" ($252 million) this week to become the year's seventh-biggest international hit.

The weekend's No. 1 tally for "Eagle Eye" hoisted its foreign cume to $45.6 million to date. Japan's weekend gross was $2.5 million from 306 locations, while the U.K. opening produced $1.7 million from 357 screens, enough to place No. 2 in the market.

Universal's "Mamma Mia!" pushed through the $400 million overseas gross mark (cume: $400.1 million) with a weekend take of $5.9 million from 3,789 locations in 49 markets. The smash hit musical is 2008's fourth-biggest international grosser after Paramount's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" ($466 million), Warner Bros.' "The Dark Knight" ($464 million) and DreamWorks/Paramount's "Kung Fu Panda" ($418 million). It also is Universal's second-highest international grosser ever after 1993's "Jurassic Park."

Buoyed by a strong Germany opening ($2 million from 382 sites), Warners' "Nights in Rodanthe" grabbed $4.4 million during the weekend from 1,725 screens in 22 markets. The cume for the romantic drama is $12.6 million.

DreamWorks/Paramount's "Tropic Thunder" opened at No. 3 in France ($1.8 million from 300 spots) and pulled $4.1 million overall from 1,662 locations in 48 markets, good for a cume of $60.2 million. Fox's horror film "Mirrors" scared up $3.1 million from 1,600 screens in 25 markets for a cume of $30.6 million.

Woody Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" retained the No. 1 market spot in its second France weekend (down just 33% from the opening frame), emerging via Warners with an estimated $2.4 million from 431 sites for a market cume of $ 7.1 million.

Sony's "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" broke the $100 million international gross mark during the weekend (cume: $100.8 million), making the Adam Sandler comedy his best-performing title abroad behind 2006's "Click," which garnered $100.4 million overseas for the studio.

A pair of fresh local-language titles scored especially well in France.

Studio Canal's release of director Pascal Thomas' reworking of Agatha Christie, "Le crime est notre affaire," opened at No. 2 with an estimated $2 million from 250 screens. "Coluche, l'histoire d'un mec," director Antoine de Caunes' film about late French humorist Michel Coluche's 1981 bid for the French presidency, opened at No. 4 with $1.6 million from 350 locations.

Other weekend tallies, plus international cumes, include: Sony's "The House Bunny," $3.2 million from 1,375 screens in 31 markets, cume $13.7 million; Warner's "Body of Lies," $1.7 million from 665 sites in eight markets, cume $6.1 million; Universal's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," $3.1 million from 1,349 dates in 33 markets, cume $69 million; Disney's "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," $2.2 million from 1,002 sites in nine markets, cume $14.1 million; Miramax/Disney's "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas," $1.6 million from 460 sites in two markets, cume $16.8; and Universal's "Wanted," $2.3 million from 1,350 screens in 21 territories, cume $201 million.

Other international cumes: Fox's "Krabat," $1.9 million from one market (Germany); Universal's "Death Race," $23.3 million; Fox's "Taken," $35.2 million; and Fox's "Babylon A.D.," $16.3 million. "

Impressive for You Don't Mess with the Zohan. Didn't see this becoming Sandler's biggest ever overseas. Just shows that his star is growing outside of the USA.

Mamma Mia! still going very strong I think we're looking at $570-580 million now worldwide, depending on how it will do in Japan.

Wanted passed $200 million overseas - very good as well. I don't think anyone expected a $335+ million worldwide gross for it before it was released.

The theatrical debut of Disney's "High School Musical" franchise kicked off the international circuit's holiday season in melodic No. 1 fashion, garnering weekend boxoffice of $40 million from 3,050 screens in 22 markets.

At the opposite end of the franchise spectrum and finishing No. 5 was Lionsgate/Mandate International's "Saw V," which premiered via various distributors in the U.K., Australia, Panama, Venezuela, Poland, Slovenia, Taiwan, West Indies and Turkey. The weekend tally was an estimated $6.1 million from 940 screens with a No. 2 U.K. finish providing $3.8 million from 367 screens.

The biggest single overseas territory by far for "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" was the U.K., where the weekend tally was $13.5 million from 500 situations, or a mighty $27,000 per screen. Advance ticket sales in the market -- the largest overseas for Hollywood studio films -- had set a record a full three weeks before its Friday opening, Disney said. Its overseas debut, in which it finished No. 1 in at least 21 territories played, is the biggest October international opening of any title since at least 2001, according to Disney. Global tally stands at $82 million. Openings in nine new foreign territories, including Italy and Mexico, are on tap this weekend.

No. 2 during the frame was "Burn After Reading," which grossed an estimated $9 million from 1,900 screens in 20 markets, hoisting the cume for the Coen brothers' spy spoof to $48 million. Worldwide, the cume is $106.3 million.

Expanding by a dozen markets in its second weekend internationally, Fox's action vehicle "Max Payne" garnered $8.7 million from 2,400 sites in 44 territories, enough to grab the No. 3 spot. Its early cume is $17.8 million.

No. 4 was the DreamWorks/Paramount thriller "Eagle Eye," which performed well in Japan and South Korea and grabbed $7 million from 3,108 screens in 54 markets. Its overseas cume now stands at $57 million.

DreamWorks/Paramount's "Tropic Thunder" registered $4.4 million from 1,620 locations in 54 markets for a cume of $66 million. Tied at $4 million each on the weekend are Universal's "Mamma Mia!" and Pixar/Disney's "WALL-E," with the smash hit musical with Meryl Streep playing 3,200 dates in 50 markets for an overseas cume of $408.7 million.

"WALL-E" was booked at 2,990 screens in 24 markets, and it finished No. 1 in Italy for the second straight weekend ($2.1 million from 600 locations). Its foreign cume climbed to $253.5 million, eclipsing New Line's "Sex and the City" as the year's eighth-biggest overseas hit.

Fox's release of the Russian-language historical drama "Admiral" drew an estimated $3.6 million from 1,225 screens in Russia and the Ukraine, hoisting its cume to $33.6 million from just the two markets. Warner's romantic drama "Nights in Rodanthe" raised its international cume to $17.8 million thanks to a $3.4 million weekend from 1,600 dates in 24 territories.

Warners' release of Woody Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" dropped from first to third place in France, collecting $1.7 million from 439 dates. Topping the market was the local-language entry "Mesrine: L'instinct de mort," a Pathe release of director Jean-Francois Richet's biopic of gangster Jacques Mesrine. The violent crime title starring Vincent Cassel drew an estimated $4.5 million from 299 situations, compared with $4.3 million from 400 locations for "HSM3," the market's No. 2 title.

The Ricky Gervais comedy "Ghost Town" from DreamWorks/Paramount opened in the U.K. in the No. 4 spot, amassing $2.1 million from 341 spots. Paramount's release of "How To Lose Friends and Alienate People" with Simon Pegg opened in Australia and New Zealand and collected $875,000 overall from 412 spots in three markets including the U.K.

Other weekend tallies, plus international cumes, include: Warners' "Body of Lies," $2.1 million from 737 screens, cume $9 million; Sony's "The House Bunny," $2.1 million from 1,370 sites, cume $16.9 million; Universal's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," $2 million from 1,178 dates, cume $72 million; Fox's "Mirrors," $1.7 million from 800 screens, cume $33.9 million; Universal's "Wanted," $1.5 million from 1,100 sites, cume $204.5 million; Disney's "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," $1.2 million from 975 screens, cume $15.9 million; Universal's "Death Race," $1.2 million from 1,070 situations, cume $25 million; and Miramax/Disney's "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas," $1 million from 438 screens in the U.K. and Spain, cume $18.8 million from just the two markets.

Other international cumes: Fox's "Babylon A.D.," $16.4 million; Warners' "Get Smart," $100 million; Fox's "Blindness," $4.4 million; and Fox's "Krabat," $6.5 million.

High School Musical dances to 22-country $40m opening
26 Oct 2008 22:35

High School Musical 3: Senior Year finished top of the class overseas thanks to an estimated $40m haul from 3,100 screens in 22 countries through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International that set a new opening weekend record for an international launch in October.

Dominant in North America as well with a $42m thee-day debut, the Disney Channel smash starring Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale opened number one in all its territories led by $13.5m in the UK, $6m in Germany, $5m in Spain, $4.3m in France and $3.7m across Scandinavia.

Elsewhere it took $1.7m in Brazil, $1m in Poland, $900,000 in Austria and $800,000 in Switzerland. High School Musical 3: Senior Year will broaden its reach next weekend, when opening highlights are expected to come from Italy and Mexico.

Wall-E added $4m for $253.5m and ranks as the eighth biggest international release of the year so far. The Pixar title stayed top in its second consecutive weekend in Italy on $2.1m for $6.9m.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua added $1.2m for $15.9m and remains the number-one release in Mexico for the fourth weekend in a row and has grossed $7m. The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas added $1m from the UK and Spain for an $18.8m international running total.

The Coen Brothers' dark comedy Burn After Reading crossed the $100m worldwide threshold to reach $106.3m after adding $9m from 1,900 locations in 20 international territories, bringing the overseas tally to $48m through Universal/UPI and other distributors.

Universal released the film in Mexico and Argentina, taking $500,000 from 230 sites in second place and a Coen Brothers record of $280,000 from 49 in first, respectively.

Burn After Reading held on to number one for the second consecutive weekend in Australia on $1m from 193 for $2.8m, and grossed $2.3m from 296 in the UK for $4.6m. It ranks second after three in Spain on $1.2m from 321 for $6.5m.

Mamma Mia! grossed $4m from 3,200 in 50 territories for $408.7m and added $385,000 for $128m (£66.3m) in the UK in the 16th weekend. Hellboy II: The Golden Army boosted its tally by $2m from 1,178 locations in 31 territories for $72m and Wanted added $1.5m from 1,100 in 17 for $204.5m.

Death Race opened in five including a potential number one launch in Taiwan. Overall the action remake grossed $1.2m from 1,070 in 27 for $25m. There are 25 territories to open over the next two months including Australia, South Africa, Serbia and Mexico next weekend.

Fox International's action title Max Payne added $8.7m from 2,400 screens in 44 markets for $17.8m, led by a solid $3.5m Russian debut on 505. Russian title Admiral added $3.6m from 1,225 in Russia and the Ukraine for a muscular $33.6m running total.

Tropic Thunder added $4.4m from 1,620 in 54 territories for $66m and opened in six, including a $1.7m debt in Italy from 256. Ghost Town starring Ricky Gervais opened in the UK on $2.1m from 341, while How To Lose Friends And Alienate People, starring another British comedy export Simon Pegg, grossed $875,000 from 412 locations in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK to stand at $7.4m. It opened in Australia and New Zealand on $529,000 from 199 and $79,000 from 40, respectively.

"Disney's "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" graduated with honors at the weekend's foreign box office in a dominant launch with a socko $40 million at 3,090 playdates in 22 markets.

"HSM3" finished first in every territory, averaged a stellar $12,945 per location and posted the biggest international total for a frame since "The Dark Knight" grossed $42 million in mid-August. The frame also marked the first time in three months that the foreign winner has matched the domestic winner, a feat last accomplished by "Dark Knight."

The impressive start portends a potentially lucrative overseas run for the feel-good musical -- particularly given the massive foreign success for "Mamma Mia!," which took another $4 million over the weekend to pass $408 million offshore.

"HSM3" took in more than the combined international grosses of the frame's next four finishers: "Burn After Reading," "Max Payne," "Eagle Eye" and "Saw V."

While "HSM3" opened in nearly all major Euro markets, "Saw V" saw $6.1 million at 940 as distribs limited launches to nine territories. Nearly two-thirds of that came from the scarefest's $3.8 million Brit debut at 367; its Venezuelan debut of $260,000 outgrossed the combined total of the next seven pics in that market.

But "HSM3" ruled, with its U.K. launch more than quadruple the take of "Saw V" with $13.5 million. And on the Continent, audiences flocked to the tuner, which raked in $6 million in Germany, $5 million in Spain, $4.3 million in France, $3.7 million in Scandinavia and $1 million in Poland. The musical's $1.7 million Brazilian opening represented Disney's fifth biggest launch ever in that market.

The "HSM3" foreign debuts generally doubled the haul last year of Disney's princess pic "Enchanted," which showed solid traction overseas with $212 million.

The strong start signals that international moviegoing could kick into high gear during the final two months of 2008. A pair of potential blockbusters -- "Quantum of Solace" and "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" -- will open in several major markets next weekend before going wide the following frame.

"Burn After Reading" finished the best of the rest with $9 million at 1,900 in 20 markets to lift foreign cume to $48 million while still early in its foreign run. The Coen brothers comedy looks likely to see its offshore performance finish well above its domestic total, currently at $58 million.

A pair of actioners also shot up notable biz, with Fox's "Max Payne" gunning down $8.7 million at 2,400 in 44 markets, led by a $3.5 million Russian launch, and Paramount's "Eagle Eye" taking $7 million at 3,108 in 54 territories.

Par's "Tropic Thunder," nearing the end of its run, grossed $4.4 million at 1,620 in 54 markets for an international cume of $66 million -- $44 million short of the domestic total and a typically moderate offshore performance for an American comedy.

Warner Bros. continued to see modest results for "Body of Lies" with $2.1 million at 737 in nine markets -- half of that from its $1.16 million South Korean debut, second behind local entry "My Wife Got Married." "Lies" has cumed $9 million, led by $3.7 million in Australia, and won't move into major European markets for two more weeks."

Get Smart passing $100 million is pretty great considering that foreign comedies usually underperform overseas. Get Smart was more successful overseas than US successes like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Tropic Thunder, Big Daddy and Wedding Crashers. $230+ million worldwide is really an excellent gross for it.

I really am wondering how Mamma Mia! will perfom in Japan. If it breaks out there (which I somewhat doubt), it will have a minimal chance at $600 million worldwide, but as I said, something like $580 million sounds more likely.

Burn After Reading is certainly passing $100 million overseas now, a huge success for the Coens!

Eagle Eye is doing pretty well too, though in Germany it flopped. Should be good for $200 million WW or so.

Hitman made $99.9 million WW (missing the $100 million mark by less than $70,000) - Max Payne will surely outdo that number. I see up to $125 million for it.

Apparently Madagascar 2 set an all time record in Ukraine and second best American opening in Russia.
So, I'm not sure what to expect. The first was mediocre unlike Shrek 2's predecessor.

Journey 3-D is also passing 100 million mark this weekend (98.79 mln.), which is also pretty good achievement considering that most of foreign markets still have very few 3D screens.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Disney's song-and-dance film "High School Musical 3: Senior Year," which opened last week as the biggest-grossing musical movie ever, remained atop the box office in North America this weekend, according to preliminary figures released Sunday.

The first big-screen version and third installment of the original made-for-television franchise by Disney Channel is expected to take in 15 million dollars over the three-day period, with 61.8 million dollars over two weeks in U.S. and Canadian theaters.

Meanwhile, HSM3 took in about 26 million dollars overseas this weekend, being No. 1 in each of its 26 international markets and with a foreign total of 85 million dollars since its release. It has grossed nearly 150 million dollars globally in just 10 days.

The Weinstein Company's comedy "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" debuted in No. 2 with 10.7 million dollars. The R-rated film is about two cash-strapped roommates who try to make adult films to pay off their bills.

Last week's runner-up "Saw V" slipped to No. 3 with 10.1 million dollars over the weekend, while "Changeling" from Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood and actress Angelina Jolie, was in No. 4 with 9.4 million dollars as it expanded to wide release.

In "Changeling," which was based a legal case in 1920s Los Angeles, Jolie played a single mother who fights against the city's bureaucratic police department after her son disappears.

New release "The Haunting of Molly Hartley," a horror film from Freestyle Releasing, was in No. 5 with 6 million dollars over the Halloween weekend, which saw Hollywood's overall sales slumping as the holiday fell on Friday coincidentally this year.

The top-selling 12 movies took in about 75.17 million dollars collectively this weekend, down about 38 percent from the same period last year. It was the first "down" weekend for Hollywood after five "up" weekends.

So that's about 14X it's budget after 10 days

"James Bond returned with a record-setting blast at the international box office as Sony/MGM's "Quantum of Solace" gunned down a socko $38.6 million at 2,123 playdates in the U.K., France and Sweden, two weeks ahead of the domestic launch.

British biz for the pic dazzled on Bond's home turf with $25.3 million at 1,150, breaking the three-day launch record held by "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and taking in a jaw-dropping 70% of the market. The Daniel Craig vehicle also set a Friday record with $8 million, 23% higher than "Goblet."

The $10.6 million French launch for "Quantum of Solace" set a Bond pic record over three days, topping the five-day mark of "Casino Royale" by 16%. And the $2.7 million Swedish debut was the fourth biggest ever in that market after the final "Lord of the Rings" pic, "Goblet" and the third "Pirates of the Caribbean."

Bond saw a stellar $18,181 per-location average for "Quantum of Solace" from the trio of territories -- portending massive biz next weekend when it expands into 57 additional markets including Germany, Italy and Russia. Sony's international distrib topper, Mark Zucker, noted that the pic benefits by coming into a market that hasn't seen an actioner with mass appeal in several months.

With "Casino Royale" having topped $425 million offshore and a high-powered worldwide promo campaign, "Quantum of Solace" may wind up topping "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," with $467 million, as the top 2008 international title.

But it wasn't all Bond on the foreign front. With Halloween having little impact outside the U.S., the frame also saw continued impressive teen and tween support for Disney's second frame of "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" as it danced its way to a solid $25.9 million at 3,805 in 32 markets.

"HSM3" kicked in its top gross in Italy with a $4.9 million opening -- Disney's fifth highest in that market -- while the U.K. followed with $4.3 million, off 56%, and France with $3.5 million, down a mere 7%. The tuner's already taken in $85 million outside the U.S.

The frame also saw Paramount's "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" turn golden in its first launches with a stunning $17.8 million at 635 in Russia and Ukraine -- the top openings ever for both markets and an early indication that the sequel could outperform the original's $340 million overseas cume. The sequel took in $16 million in the red-hot Russian market, breaking the record for local smash "The Very Best Movie."

Par's opted for a gradual foreign release on the "Madagascar" sequel, with only Hungary and the Philippines launching next weekend and most key territories open by the end of the month.

By contrast, international audiences showed only modest support for serious political fare as Oliver Stone's "W." opened with a moderate $750,000 at 200 in France, its first major market. Similarly, Warner's early foreign results for Middle East thriller "Body of Lies" have been muted with $10.8 million in 10 markets, mostly from Australia and South Korea.

"Burn After Reading" continued to generate respectable foreign numbers with $6.7 million at 1,705 in 20 markets, eclipsing its domestic total with $58 million overseas. "Saw V" scared up $5.8 million in 17 territories -- but with Mexico the only major market -- to lift its early foreign total to $14.3 million, and "Eagle Eye" grabbed $4.5 million at 2,276 in 54 markets to push international cume to $65.5 million.

And "Mamma Mia!" stayed a player with $3.4 million at 2,700 in 46 territories to raise its foreign total to $414.8 million and edge past "Kung Fu Panda" as 2008's third best international grosser after "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" and "The Dark Knight.""

I think we can expect over $100 million from Quantum next weekend. It has a chance to knock-out both Indy's and TDK's overseas totals.

James Bond jolted the international boxoffice during the weekend as Sony/MGM's "Quantum of Solace," the 22nd installment in the 007 franchise launching in only three overseas markets, drew a spectacular $38.6 million from 2,123 screens and claimed the No. 1 spot easily.

Another fresh entry, DreamWorks Animation/Paramount's "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa," a sequel to 2005's "Madagascar," added voltage with an estimated $17.8 million from 635 screens in Russia and Ukraine, the biggest opening weekend of any title to play only those two markets. It ranked as the weekend's No. 3 attraction overseas.

Biggest by far of the three territories played by the latest Bond movie was the production's home base, the U.K., where "Quantum" dominated with $25.3 million from 1,150 situations for a whopping $22,000 per-screen average. It was the biggest three-day opening for any film in the U.K., surpassing by 35% the market opening of 2006's Bond installment "Casino Royale," according to Mark Zucker, Sony's president of international distribution.

In its No.1 five-day premiere in France, "Quantum" pulled $10.6 million from 824 sites (a per-screen average of $12,864), which Zucker said is a market boxoffice record for the series. In Sweden, "Quantum's" opening figure was $2.7 million from 149 situations (a per-screen average of $18,121), 31% bigger than "Casino's" bow in that market.

Referring to the $38.6 million weekend figure accumulated in "Quantum's" three markets, Zucker said, "No other international release in 2008 has grossed more (playing in) fewer than 27 territories."

Weekend action for the Bond title propelled Sony's international boxoffice for 2008 past the $1 billion mark.

"Quantum" will play in 57 new markets this coming weekend and will not open domestically until Nov. 14. Sony opened "Casino" overseas Nov. 15, 2006, and the film drew $338.3 million before Jan. 1, 2007. Its full offshore run grossed $432.1 million.

"High School Musical 3: Senior Year,"
Disney's comparatively low-budget, made-for-cable-TV franchise entry, placed second on the weekend overseas with an estimated $25.9 million from 3,805 situations, drawing a $6,807 per-screen average in 32 markets. The film's overseas cume is $85 million, and it has grossed $146.8 million worldwide.

"HSM3," produced for a reported $13 million, finished No. 1 in each of the nine new territories it played and in 24 markets overall. Italy led the pack with $4.9 million from 250 sites, a per-screen average of nearly $20,000.

Fourth on the weekend overseas was the Coen brothers' espionage spoof "Burn After Reading," which garnered $6.7 million from 1,705 screens in 20 markets and upped its international cume to $58 million. At No. 5 was "Saw V," the latest chapter in Lionsgate/Mandate International's grisly horror franchise, which tallied $5.8 million from 26 markets, raising its overseas cume to $14.3 million and its worldwide total to $60.1 million.

In France, "W.," Oliver Stone's version of the rise of President Bush, premiered at No. 8 in Paris and its suburbs, taking $750,000 from 200 screens in the market overall. Universal's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" opened at No. 4 in Paris and its suburbs, grossing $2.4 million from 410 sites in France and $3.8 million on the weekend from 1,428 dates in 26 territories. The film's overseas cume is $76.5 million.

In its fourth weekend in France, Warner Bros.' release of Woody Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" ranked No. 5 in Paris and its environs, winding up with $1.4 million from 430 sites on the weekend and upping its overseas cume to $12.1 million. The top local-language title in France remains "Mesrine: L'instinct de mort," a violent biopic of gangster Jacques Mesrine starring Vincent Cassel, who won a best actor nod at the recent Tokyo International Film Festival for his performance.

"Mesrine," a Pathe release, finished No. 2 in Paris and its suburbs and made off with $3.3 million from 489 dates during its second weekend -- down 25% from its opening frame -- raising its market cume to $8 million.

Other weekend tallies, plus international cumes, include: Fox's "Max Payne", $2.9 million from 2,400 screens, $23.4 million; DreamWorks/Paramount's "Eagle Eye," $4.5 million from 2,267 screens, $65.5 million; Universal's "Mamma Mia!" $3.4 million from 2,700 sites, $414.8 million (third-highest foreign grosser this year); DreamWorks/Paramount's "Tropic Thunder," $3.3 million from 1,306 situations, $71.2 million; Pixar/Disney's "WALL-E," $3 million from 2,005 screens, $258.8 million; Warners' "Nights in Rodanthe," $2.7 million from 1,274 dates, $22 million; Warners' "Body of Lies," $1.1 million from 594 screens, $10.8 million; and Universal's "Death Race," $1.7 million from 2,309 dates, $27.9 million.

Other international cumes include: Disney's "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," $16.6 million; New Line's "Appaloosa," $3.6 million; Paramount's "Ghost Town," $4.6 million (U.K. only); Fox's "The Admiral," $36.6 million (Russia and Ukraine only); Sony's "Step Brothers," $25.9 million; Miramax/Disney's "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas," $20 million (U.K. and Spain only); New Line's "Journey to the Center of the Earth," $97 million; Warners' "Get Smart," $100.2 million; Sony's "The House Bunny," $19.1 million; and Fox's "Mirrors," $34.5 million."

Terrific for Quantum of Solace - I'm pretty sure it'll become the #1 grosser of the year overseas - $500+ million here we come! I think we're looking at $700+ million worldwide here, thoug the overall WW gross should stay behind Indy's.

Excellent for Madagascar 2. I don't think Russia's opening will mirror all markets, but it will outdo the first film overseas, I guess. Maybe $400 million OS? In any case, we'll be seeing Madagascar flicks for years to come. Just wait till Kung-Fu Panda 2. It will most likely make $800+ million worldwide.

Burn after Reading is well on its way to $150+ million worldwide. Very respectable.

I hope WALL-E can still pass $500 million worldwide. Unless it bombs in Japan, it should, I think, but not by much.

Amazing for Mamma Mia! Hell, its OS gross will be within less than $50 million of Indy's and The Dark Knight's!
