Frank Capra Appreciation!
Since Makewings said he was not familiar with Frank Capra, I have started this thread for people to comment upon his work!
Capra made films from the silent days, through the great depression, and into the 60s. He constantly championed the "little man" against the powerful, and his films are quite funny and genuinely inspiring in some cases. He also made some real crappy films too, but you can say that about any director (well, except a few, but I'll leave that for another thread). Some of his films, like any old film, feel very dated but of course you have to understand that when you watch older movies.
Here is a short list of the films someone should see to discover Capra:
It's a Wonderful Life (
http://imdb.com/title/tt0038650/)
The holiday classic with Jimmy Stewart! When a man wishes he had never been born, a clumsy angel shows him what life would have been like without him.
You Can't Take it With You http://imdb.com/title/tt0030993/
Very funny and the winner of Best Picture and Best Director Oscars.
It Happened One Night http://imdb.com/title/tt0025316/
Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in another great comedy, which is one of the few films to win the 5 top Oscar awards! (Picture, Actor, Actress, Director, Writer)
Mr. Deeds Goes to Town http://imdb.com/title/tt0027996/
The real one, not the Adam Sandler remake. Capra won another Best Director award for this one.
Arsenic and Old Lace http://imdb.com/title/tt0036613/
Very funny Cary Grant film with lots of dark humor.
Meet John Doe http://imdb.com/title/tt0033891/
Gary Cooper again, as the little guy fighting against the powers that be.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington http://imdb.com/title/tt0031679/
Jimmy Stewart again as the one Senator who is not corrupt!
You can't go wrong with any of these.
