Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
I don't know if it will do $75 million opening weekend due to the fact that its an animated film, but Star Wars: The Clone Wars should do very well this August.

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
Yeah I agree with what Magnus said. It should have a $75m+ weekend and then sharp drops. All depends on how its marketed.
Dammit - Lucas should just make Episodes VII, VIII and IX already.

It would keep costs down and ensure continuity. But I suspect they would leave a bigger gap between each film's release - ie. 2 years.

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
Per Variety, Star Trek has been bumped from Christmas to May 8, 2009. The same article mentions the Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder is moving from July 11 to August 15. And it also mentions Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island (starring Leo DiCaprio, who else) will open October 2. http://www.variety.com/article/VR111798 ... Id=13&cs=1

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
That leaves DEC 08 EMPTY. If I was Fox/Focus, I'd move 9 back a week now to take advantage of this even if Star Trek probably wouldn't have affected it at all. And Dreamworks should bump MAD 2 into DEC now.
HP6 is going to have a very nice run it seems. HP4 had to deal with Narnia and Kong, but HP6 doesn't have anything to contend with at the moment. And so will everything else from NOV (though something from NOV will probably move to DEC now).

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
looks like filmings are moving to avoid tdk...though this virtually gaurentees TDK will be moved up to wednesday.
Paramount just helped out w.b. sooo much for 2008.
I wonder...could Star Trek be moving due Hulks possible move to december?

What the fuck Paramount. Star Trek opening the day after Wolverine opens? What the fuck. I mean, if you're going to move it to summer 2009, at least give it a GOOD spot. July is WIDE open. Why not go with July 17th? That gives it seperation from Transformers and G.I. Joe, so Paramount doesn't have to worry about hurting their own movies. Not to mention, this is not a sure-fire hit movie, thus opening in winter would have been MUCH safer. Idiot. Why would Tropic Thunder move from a fantastic July spot opening against small competition to moving to a August spot opening against big competition AND having Pineapple Express on its back? Idiot. However, if it stays, WB needs to fucking move TDK up a week and force HB2 out somewhere. WB can't let that spot just go empty like that. They need to be aggressive and take it. The film would have a chance at better legs in that spot (more days in July, not to mention it's 2nd weekend probably would have little competition). The Shutter Island thing may be a typo. October 2nd is a Thursday. Not to mention, it would be stupid to open a Leo movie RIGHT before another Leo movie opens, which I think has much more potential (Body of Lies with Ridley Scott and Crowe and Leo). I think they meant to say October 2nd, 2009. Which would make sense. Corpse wrote: That leaves DEC 08 EMPTY. Eh...not really. Star Trek was opening Christmas Day, and the most it was going to do in those seven days was 75m. I think it can be replaced (*cough*Incredible Hulk*cough*). Or you have Mad. 2 move to December 12th and have Seven Pounds move to Christmas Day. Mad. 2/TDTESS could be like A&C/Legend, though TDTESS would probably open to half of Legend. [color=#0080FF][b]More empty then. Because compare DEC 08 to DEC 04, 05, 06, and 07. It looks terribly weak. And I'd move TDK back a week too. Also, no film has claimed OCT 31st yet? That's odd.

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
No, it wont Magnus. Youd rather the film open the week after a dead weekend than have a dead weekend in its 2nd weekend.
Opening a week after Hancock would allow Hancock to steal some buzz, press and media coverage TDK would get if there was no big opener the week before it. But i do think TDK will defiently move to Wednesday, July 16th and its just a matter of time.
If they were smart though, theyll keep it on friday. That gives it 16 days since Hancock opened, ample time for the press and media to blow up. Obviously, given thats its batman and ledger death, the film was gonan have a big media frenzy, but moving would just make it that much smaller.
Thats excluding the fact that Hancocks 2nd weekend will be around 20-25 million. TDK would have the 2nd place film in its weekend be in the mid teens, which is whatll be if it keeps July 18-20 as its opening weekend.

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
Quote: Right now, it is opening against competition of at least 25m+, maybe 30m+. If it opens July 11th, it probably would have no competition opening against it as HB2 would move. It probably actually could open bigger on July 11th. And it would have seven more days in July plus having a softer 2nd weekend drop What you talking? Hellboy 2 is going to bomb big, it might open to 30 million but itll be below 15 million by its 2nd weekend. Mama Mia! will open in high teens. Itllgo 1. The Dark Knight - 115 million 2. Mama Mia - 18 million 3. Hellboy 2 - 13 million 4. Hancock -12 million I dunno, I would take either. IF Step Brothers wouldnt move and Mama Mia would be July 18th's only big opener, than Id take the move to July 11th and force Hellboy outta there. BUT It would have to stay on the Friday! If they tried to open on wednesday July 9th, Hancock wouldnt be fully outta gas thus yet. They are better off just staying where they are; it gives them more time to garner buzz and hype. Honestly, now the situation s there for TDK to be a possible 2nd bigges opening of all time. There would 2 months between huge block busters (indy and batman) and 16 days between big films (hancock and batman). That empty two weeks gives TDK time to go from huge blockbuster to mega blockbuster, because the media will have nothing else to focus except the film, ledgers death, ect. Its already the most talked about film of the year, but this gives it even more.

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
Not it isnt, sith oened in 3660 theaters. If the demand is there itll get the screens and with 16 days of nothing to talk about movie wise other than batman, the demand will sure as hell be there. Magnus, that 16 days is the different between HUGE 100-110 million opening weekend and 120-130.
Those 16 days are 16 days where TDK will be the only film the media talks about, its 16 days to completely flood the market. You take big buzz and give it so much awareness (because theres nothing else to talk about) in such a short period of time (16 days) and thats how buzz explodes, how you go from huge hit to mega hit. The wait. Its all about the wait. The wait before 300, the wait before american gangster, the wait for i am legend...
You want TDK to open in a dead market, where nothing good has been been released in atleast 2 weeks and right now, some how they have gotten it.
Ill take the extra week along with 2 new openers. But it has to stay. It cant switch weekends; a move to wednesday might not be that bad but it needs to stay on the friday.
TDK is honestly in the single best position box office wise right now than any film ive ever followed. if the schedule remains EXACTLY how it is and w.b. unloads its marketing budget in june and july...this film will shatter expectations, even my own. I hate to say it, but Heath ledgers death is probably why films will leave.
It was already gonna be a tough fight for attention against batman, but now itll be downright impossible.
This is wbs chance to make TDK the biggest film of 2008. The buzz for Indiana Jones isnt there because they waited too long. Right now, TDK has all the buzz heading into summer and now it has by far the best schedule. We saw how pirates 2 did with superman a week before it, imagine how it woulda done without superman.

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
Magnus, the schedule I was looking at was older, so it didn't have some of those. It does look fine now though.
Also, if MAD 2 doesn't move to DEC (it really should). It'll have HSM3, Potter, and Bolt as competition. Just too much for it in my opinion. But if MAD 2 doesn't move, if I was Disney I'd think about moving Bolt to DEC then. Further away from MAD 2, and the bigger problem, Potter. Opening just 5 days after Potter. And Bolt looks so cuuute, just like Rapunzel in 2010/2011, it'll have a mix of CGI and Traditional Animation it seems....

Nevermind, Rapunzel is using NPR it seems. Tarzan's Canvas System, Sin City, and 300 used it too.

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
Star trek moving means that hulk 2 will take that spot or who knows maybe fox will move dragonball there.
But as of now i think dragonball will be a massive bomb since it won't be able to handle competition from star wars and tropic thunder.

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
Aggghhhh so many moves all over the place.
You guys have covered most of it.
Star Trek would be well served in the summer of 09 but the date is totally wrong. Still early days though as now the writers strike is over looks like Summer 09 will take shape fast.
Tropic Thunder - thats a stupid move but whatever - im not expecting much from it. And it comes a day after Star Wars was anounced.
July 08 is in need of severe re-construction. Hopefully Hellboy can be dumped because its wasting a perfectly good weekend and throwing the whole month off. Love Guru should take advantage.
Now the best news is Benjamin Button. It should thrive in December and I think it could be Finchers biggest hit.
Madagascar should stay where it is and Bolt should go to December.

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule (re; Magnus)
The question to ask..
"Why would Paramount move several of its 2008 films to 2009 and not Dreamworks releases?"
While how much they can gross is an issue, there is a much, much larger fiscal reason that if rumor is correct, will be made apparent in time.

Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule

The Eddie Murphy family comedy Meet Dave (formerly titled “Starship Dave“) has been moved back from May 30th to July 11th. Dave was originally set to go head to head with Sex and the City: The Movie, and will now compete with Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D. Paramount’s Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder was originally set to open on this July date, but was moved to August.
With Paramount pushing JJ Abrams’ Star Trek from it’s previous December 25th release, it opened up prime real estate, which Fox will fill with the big screen adaptation of Marley and Me starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson. Marley was originally set to open one week before Christmas. Marley and Me will now go head to head with the Adam Sandler family fantasy comedy Bedtime Stories. STARSHIP DAVE - July 11th MARLEY AND ME - December 25th Seems like fox also did some reshuffling. Although if they wanted they could have moved dragonball to december 25th or july 11th but they didn't. Instead on December 2th marley me comes out. They also moved Starship dave. It comes out a 2 weeks before x-files 2. That move makes sense since they haven't released any kind of promo material for that and it was supposed to release on may 30th. July 11th will be crowded as hell and basically the entire month of july is jam packed.
