Post So...about the President's State of the Union Address?
It hasn't started yet (another 20 minutes or so) but, at least in my opinion, the president is bound to create more BS to label his recent excursions as successes. Still, it's a yearly thing to watch it (plus. I LOVE bitching about him as is) and I plan to do it again this year. Are you tuning in?

Let's try to keep all discussion in this thread...;)

Let's NOT keep all discussions in this thread. In fact, let's all invade the Best of 2005 thread, all Uwe Boll discussions, several review threads in the Review forum, and perhaps start another 11 topics on it in the DVD section. Come on, who's with me?!

Let's BAN Mr. X. Who wants his lil' ass on the boards anyways? Sheesh. He's the one responsible for provoking rusty, who eventually, turns a thread about blueberries into a thread about sterile pads.

Maybe not. ;)

Post About Social Security.
I posted this on my blog, but I figure that I might as well post it here.

In light of Bush's SotU address, I figured I'd put in my 2 cents.

I realize that Bush's plan is not perfect. In fact, if it were up to me, I would do away with SOcial Security altogether, Roosevelt's legacy be damned. But here we are, with that monstrosity of a program on our hands. Bush's plan provides for private accounts, where we can use some of our money to divest from the governmen fund and invest it into some stocks or bonds. The key feature, in my mind, about the plan is the private accounts part. Sure they may be restrictive, but they are private. That means that the government cannot at a later date take that money away from me. Not so with regular Social Security benefits. The Supreme Court ruled in the past that the Social Security benefits are not guaranteed and are not covered by the property rights. That means that the Congress can vote to cut social security benefits, increase the qualifying age, etc.

Hence, the private accounts, for all their drawbacks, have the immeasurable benefit of actually belonging to the people, and not to the whim of the lawmakers.

True, and the biggest problem is that no one has the balls to do something - this SS issue been talked about for 20 years.

- One problem with the private accounts is that most people don't understand the stock market - look at how much money people lost in a down market. I bet you alot of people will end up losing money or going broke with this money they are given.

- No one is ever going to do political suicide by adjusting SS now - I am not saying take all the money away from the elderly but maybe do some kind of mean test that saves some money now rather than just passing it all onto the next generation.

- Also, if you look at SS - 20 years ago they raised people's contribution about 3000 every 3 years. Now it goes up about 3000 every year and the took the cap off the medicare so if you make a million you will pay the 1.65 % or something on the whole million unlike years ago.

- I think they can't just pass it off 25 years into the future and have to do something radical today. But no one is going to have the balls.

I enjoyed the part when Joe Biden started an ovation which nobody joined.

Overall a good speech with hardly anything new. I can hardly wait until Bush and the gang get to cracking on the deletion of the 150 programs. Hopefull at some point in the future he elaborates on exactly which programs he is talking about and then adds his stupid new expansion in pell grants and money for college. :crosses fingers: please be getting rid of large parts of the IRS code.
