I'm surprised Oldboy isin't nominated for more. Was it not eligible, or something?

I think unlike Golden Horse Awards, this is mostly exclusive to HongKong-produced films instead of even Chinese, let alone Asian, cinema as a whole.

Something tells me 2046 will sweep these

Hopefully, Oldboy will win Best Asian Film, if Zatoichi gets it, I'll be mad.

I loved In the Mood for Love, and he has a reputation for tight action/violence like in Chungking Express (which sadly I haven't seen) and Fallen Angels (which I have but thought was mediocre). I've seen Happy Together as well, but it was three years ago, and I must say, despite not being madly in love with it, it was because it was a very different and ambitious project. I like that actually, when I director tackles new ground. It often doesn't lead to the crispest movie, but you have to respect someone for trying to leave the "safe" zone, and he does it quite often and is never a failure.

I don't know much about 2046 except for I checked out the cast. Its the same cast that's doing to be in Memoirs of a Geisha. Hell, I'm going, the three best actresses out of China are all in it. And I really don't know the male equivalencies with the exception of Tony, and I've loved him since way back when I was 12 or 13 and saw him in The Lover.

Oh, but according to Archy its grossing way less than the other releases. I wonder why that is? Kung Fu hustle is huge there.

Wong Kar-Wai's films don't gross that high in box office because they're more art than mainstream. His style is very distinct. In you like In the Mood for Love, which I do, you should enjoy 2046 as well.

In recent years, most of the Hong Kong movies are trashes......

I have seen New Police Story, and it is a terrible movie......

Of the picture nominees, I've only seen New Police Story and 2046. While I liked New Police Story more than 2046, it really isn't an award-winning type movie (save for Daniel Wu's Best Supporting Acting perfomrance). It's like if The Bourne Supremacy getting nominated at the Oscars (Chris Rock would probably love these awards).

I haven't seen Kung Fu Hustle yet, but it think it will win best picture.

Me too. Did anything get more nominations? (Shaolin Soccer having done so well before only helps)

I'm going to give a hand of these a viewing, but i tend to agree that the genre needs to reinvent itself outside of the genre. Its the same as American "action" movies, it gets boring unless you go back to the basics of good plot, dialogue, etc. The choreography and violence alone don't hold my attention any better than a building blowing up in Die Hard to the millionth degree would. Some of these directors are good storytellers though, so we'll see if they integrate the action scenes into a larger film or if its really just about the action scenes. How had everyone here already seen 2046? Is it out in the states already? I'm actually interested in seeing it.

If you live near any Chinese-American communities, all Chinese rental stores should have 2046. But it may or may not have subtitles depending on the version of your copy. It's probably also downloadable online (probably on Chinese sites?). And there is 97 ebay listings of the dvd right now.

Otherwise, BOM lists its theatrical release date as 2005, but I doubt it would get more theaters than Infernal Affairs did.

So Kung-Fu Hustle and 2046 won six awards each. I am a bit surprised that 2046 didn't take Best Picture, though. Very glad, however, that Tony Leung has won. One of the finest Asian actors out there right now.

Speaking of 2046, for those who have seen it...do I need to see In the Mood for Love before it, it doesn't it matter?

By the way, you should change the title, Michael ;)

No....

Becuase 2046 is a totally useless sequel of In the Mood for Love.

No, the two stories aren't really connected. I still recommend to see In the Mood of Love first, although I'm in a different opinion with mary in that I think 2046 is very good in its own right.

Thanks mary and Michael! :)

My theatre will be getting 2046 next week and I want to check it out. They show the trailer for it all the time recently before other movies and it looks really good (great music!).
