All numbers are in U.S. $'s. For that reason totals may be slightly off compared to other reported totals because of change in conversion rates (totaling up over weeks at different rates vs conversion of entire cume with current rates which HR seems to do)

Well, looks like a Top 5 finish in UK is guaranteed. This is simply insane

Doing well in Germany too where it has a yearly Top 10 finish guaranteed as well. It outdid Indy, Kung-Fu Panda, Sex and the City and will be above The Dark Knight as well. In fact it has a shot at beating the current #1 of the year as well (Hancock).

Worldwide, well, with many many more markets still ahead, I think we're looking at $550+ million WW, maybe even $600 million if it breaks out in France and Russia. Hell, its overseas gross could match Indy's!!!

I guarantee it will break out to surprising numbers here. The musical opened two years ago and sold over 100,000 tickets in Moscow in the first TWO MONTHS, 450,000 in the first year, which is 50% higher than what the Russian version of CATS did. It also became the most attended show in Russia, outperforming such monsters as annual MAKS Airshow and the Big Moscow State Circus - even Madonna with her one and only concert and all its controversy sold 30,000 tickets. Overall box-office in 19 months (it finished this May) is over $25 million and over 600,000 tickets. The musical was also in the Russia Records book for the biggest number of non-stop showings (500 showings in 475 days, 8 times a week) and the biggest number of viewers per showing for a non-stop play (the average number of tickets sold was about 80% - around 1000 tickets per show for over 600 shows).

They were promoting the show like crazy on TV - and all Moscow was in its posters (most of those that were in the subway trains are still there). Of all the musicals we had here it got the biggest publicity ever. They had to extend the show's running period several times, because the demand was so high, and they were constantly getting multiple requests from viewers to keep running it. People reserved tickets months before.
ABBA is uber-popular, and always was + retro is becoming a powerful trend in the last years. It is doomed to be a smashing hit. I'm not sure if they will dub it with translated songs from the local version of musical (like they did with Chicago) - if so, the appeal would be even bigger since the musical's theatrical run proved they didn't spoil anything with the Russian texts.

Does it have a chance to open to $10+ million in Russia?

Yes, it does. I think in terms of drawing power this is closer to Irony of Fate 2 than to Sex and the City. Although surely its marketing is nothing close to Irony or the stage musical, but in terms of the crowds it can potentially draw, it's still well above and beyond Sex. The good factor working in its favor, is that it will draw a lot of people in the regions as well as in key markets. Since the WOM for the play was absolutely awesome, and too many people who heard how good is it never got a chance to see it, they will be happy to get a chance to see it now.
I just got a confirmation - it will be fully dubbed (which is not that great to all the ABBA fans, but the songs from the stage musical were taken very favorably - the guy who translated them is pretty talented and famous musician), which probably means they would put the recorded songs from the show, like they did with Chicago (I absolutely hated this BTW, although it was done pretty professionally). This will help cover bigger audience.
If not the late September release, I wouldn't have doubts about its chances for $25-30 m...

Its kind of funny to see the arrogance of the fanboys of The Dark Knight have their asses promptly handed to them by a singing-dancing-chickflick in so many countries.

I mean the fact that this outgrossed The Dark Knight anywhere other than Sweden is remarkable in its own right. Mamma Mia is definitely my pick for best performer of the year worldwide.

Updated.
The new figures extend its lead on The Devil Wears Prada by $15m and Hairspray to $20m.

Considering the Devil Wears Prada actually opened significantly stronger, and also had great word of mouth, and that Hairspray had good word of mouth and opened identically shows the sheer strength of this movies legs.

I think essentially, especially in the UK, a lot more people are going to see this movie than figures let on - since Seniors get a significant discount in Blighty, and this late on seniors are making up the mass of its audience.

I always knew that the right senior appealing project would do very well, Mamma Mia had the advantage of appealing to youngsters out of the gate so the studio would continue to treat it well, but as the weeks went on, oldies decided to join in too. It's kind of a perfect storm of cross-generational appeal and good word of mouth and the right audience for legs.

Universal's "Mamma Mia!" -- the summer's biggest surprise success on the international front -- dazzled again with $12.1 million at 2,933 in 33 markets to lift the foreign cume to $258.3 million thanks mostly to impressive holdovers. Once again, U.K. biz led the way with $2.8 million in its eighth frame, finishing a close second to the launch of "Step Brothers" as the feel-good tuner declined just 20% for a 52-day Brit cume of $106.4 million.

It's a shame it cant just grab that #1 spot one more time in the UK. I guess its overall gross is more important but it would just look impressive.

Screendaily

Universal's worldwide smash Mamma Mia! stayed on song as an estimated weekend haul to the tune of $12.1m from 2,933 venues in 33 territories through UPI boosted it to sixth in this year's overseas pantheon on $258.3m.

As if overtaking Iron Man's $256 cumulative total weren't reward in itself, Universal top brass will be pleased to see that the worldwide tally is a week or so away from $400m and currently stands at $391.2m.

The musical scored notable number one launches in Poland on $1.4m from 78 and South Africa on $363,000 from 89. Results from the debuts in Colombia, Romania, Thailand and Vietnam are expected early this week.

Mamma Mia! benefited from a strong hold in the UK where it ranks second and consolidated its status as the highest earner of the year to date. The $2.8m weekend haul from 500 following a 20% drop pushed the UK tally to $106.4m.

Ranking third in Germany after seven weekends, the film added $1.2m from 582 after tumbling 42% for $30.4m and also ranks third in Spain on $1.4m from 375 for $13.8m after four and held at fifth in Australia on $716,000 from 283 for $27m after eight. There are 22 territories to open over the next two months. South Korea, Portugal, Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia open this week on September 4.

Money, money, money. Must be funny. To be the guys getting Mamma Mia's cheques.

It deserves its money though. I don't really understand the shaky reaction to it here or in the critical community... I thought it was wonderful fun.

£54,541,447 total so far. So it is still at #8 All time but only about £1m behind Casino Royale. It should beat it by the end of this weekend.

Mamma Mia is within £15m of topping Titanic as the all time #1 box office film in the UK.
I think that the odds of it topping that are slim now, as the school holidays are coming to an end, which shouldn't hurt this movie too much since it's a lot of oldies going to see it.

I think it, at a push, has another £12m to give, but not much more than that. Certainly we can see it lodging behind Titanic and Harry Potter in the all time books, and anything that beats Lord of the Rings has to be pretty major, right?

Its definitely a summer spirit movie, and I don't know with the official summer ending immediately if it can see life into the fall.

Post Re: MAMMA MIA! Global ($391M) ($98m and #8 All Time in UK)
I don't think there are fitting words to describe Mamma Mia!'s performance in the UK. I mean, honestly, I'd equate its UK performance to The Dark Knight's US performance.

I mean it's a lock to pass £60 million by now. I don't think it can beast Titanic, but the question is....can it pass Harry Potter 1 to become the #2 of all-time in the UK?

In any way, it will now definitely pass $400 million overseas (given that it has many major territories to open in). I'd say that $450 million isn't out of question either. Could be the 4th-biggest overseas grosser of the year (asumming that Quantum of Solace, Indy and TDK will be the ones ahead of it).
