I'm rooting for Sideways or Million Dollar Baby, but since Sideways has virtually no shot at winning it, I'm going to put all my effort behind M$B. While The Aviator was (at times) a wonderful movie, Million Dollar Baby was so superior to it, in my opinion, that I'd be a bit disheartened if Aviator won as a way to honor Martin Scorsese.

A win by Finding Neverland (which won't happen anyway) would cause me to froth at the mouth.

After your bloated analysis, is that all you can say. Gotta love Lecter, he always posts but never says anything. But then again maybe this is a good thing as hopefully Lecter won't have anything more to say and we won't see his usually excessive posts, saying nothing.

And to answer the question = MDB

I think the AMPAS should continue its trend of the past few years in awarding the Best Picture, regardless of genre, to the best film of the year. It's happened recently with a musical, then a fantasy film, and now, hopefully a comedy.

I'm throwing my support behind Sideways. It's the only film of the five to hit every note perfectly. And it just happens to be a comedy.

Best Picture wins for comedies are few and far between. Out of 432 nominated films, only 17% have been comedies, and even less, 11% have won Best Picture.

Here's the list of comedic films that have won Best Picture. For some of these films, whether or not they truly qualify as comedies as opposed to dark comedies or dramas with some comedic moments is debatable.

It Happened One Night -1934
You Can't Take It With You -1938
Going May Way-1944
All About Eve-1950
The Apartment-1960
Tom Jones-1963
The Sting-1973
Annie Hall-1977
Terms of Endearment-1983
Driving Miss Daisy-1989
Shakespeare in Love-1998
American Beauty-1999

This is a rare year that the AMPAS can award a film AND acknowledge a genre that is often overlooked.

Maybe next year, a sci-fi film will be worthy.

In fact with the exception of Leo's performance, The Aviator is the most boring movie ever nominated for best picture.

Scorsese has made fantastic movies like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas that should have won best picture hands down. Hopefully the academy will not make the mistake of awarding him for his stellar career with a BP win since The Aviator does not deserve it.

I'm seeing my first Oscar film this weekend, but I'm not sure which one I'm going to see. The threatre in London by me is playing Sideways, Million Dollar Baby and The Aviator. Which Oscar film should I see?

I'm leaning towards The Aviator. If I like it as much as I think I will (I saw a clip with Leo and Cate....ahhh...it was amazing) then it will be the film I'm rooting for.

Million Dollar Baby is another choice close behind, because I want to see whether I agree with people calling this a "masterpiece". But to tell you the truth, Million Dollar Baby's story just does not interest me at all.

Sideways looks great, and I'll definately check that out sometime, but it's not my #1 priority.

I'd see Finding Neverland if it were playing there, but it's not.

Without having seen any of the films, I'm rooting for The Aviator. I'm not sure whether we're allowed to vote just for who we're rooting for period without having seen any films.

PEACE, Mike ;)

Yes, you can root for anybody you wish, even if you don't feel the movie deserves it. You can also change your mind (just note your poll vote) and post that you're now rooting for another movie. For instance, if you see the Aviator, which you voted for, and you love it, and then you see M$B, and are blown away by it, you can join the winning team, and root along with us.

While I thought DiCaprio was quite good, Cate Blanchett is the one who elevated The Aviator to another level, imo.

I would compare Cate's work in The Aviator to Jamie's in Ray, it's at that level.

Mike, why not see all three?

I can believe it. I saw only a clip of her performance and I was in awe. Part of me is seeing the film because of her (the rest of me is because Scorcese rocks and the film looks awesome).

Seeing all 3 would be fun, but can't happen. None of my friends like watching these type films. They are into super summer action stuff, not Oscar material. So, I'm seeing the Aviator with my father. And I don't want to go to films on my own. That's just too weird for me.

PEACE, Mike ;)

You shouldn't have said it, now Goldie will not think much of your opinion and your Oscar predicting skills...

What a pity, eh?

lol, I really don't get his stance on that. You don't need to have seen any films to have good predicting skills. Infact, it's probably better not to see the films, because it's creates bias through personal opinion.

Meh, just my thought.

Yeah, that's like saying you can't predict and analyze a movies box office until you've seen it. I think Goldie is just looking for reasons to get lippy with Lecter, so if you're listening, Goldie, shut the hell up with the petty crap already. :???:

I never had a problem going by myself but I know a lot people who don't like to, so don't feel weird.

Out of those 3, The Aviator is the most popcorn. Unless you like crying or laughing by yourself, I would rule out Sideways and Million Dollar Baby.

Heh, I got used to that since just like your friends, mine are not really into smaller oscar-type films either.

When I was younger, I had a similiar hangup about going to the movies by myself. I was worried about what others would think. (he's a loser, couldn't get a date, doesn't have friends, etc...) I finally realized that if I want to see a movie, I'm going to see it, and I don't care what any of those geeks think. The movie that actually broke me of that phobia was Pulp Fiction. I couldn't get ANYBODY to go see that with me. Go figure. I went by myself. Now, more than ever, I go by myself. I used to have my brother to go with, because he liked movies as much as I do. (have no idea why Pulp Fiction didn't look interesting, because he loved it when he saw it)

I have seen both best picture noms by myself, and was literally by myself for Sideways, as nobody else was in the theater. If I would have waited for Oscar loving friends to go with me, I might still be waiting. I think M$B has an appeal that goes beyond the Oscar crowd. I don't think Sideways is as much for those who prefer movies like Too Fast Too furious and the like.

I'm rotting for Million Dollar Baby.

However, I think the Aviator is almost just about as equally great as M$B. I mean Aviator just combines all the great aspects of film-making into one gigantic epic.
But I liked Baby's more subtle and in the end, more effective punch.

On my top ten list, the films stand as....

5. Million Dollar Baby
6. The Aviator
7. Sideways

9. Ray

~22: Finding Neverland

80% of movies in theatres, I see by myself. It's not only that friends of mine don't like all these movies, it's also that there are just too many movies I want to see. None of my friends thinks of it badly in any way, though and I don't care much either actually.

Oh and funnily enough, Pulp Fiction is the favorite movie of many of my friends, heh.

It's a sad day when you can't get someone, anyone, to see an Alexander Payne movie.

I'm rooting for Million Dollar Baby.

If the conservatives kill that, I'm rooting for Sideways.

If the prohibitionists kill that, then Ray.

If the People for the Ethical Treatment For the Blind kill that, then The Aviator.

I would advocate a meteor hitting the Earth before acknowledging Finding Neverland with that reward.
