I got an email with some industry tracking today which suggests there is the possibility Mamma Mia could be headed for north of £50m.

Since we are already just shy of £40m it's certainly not off the cards, but the box office can be unpredictable, and it has to cave at some point.

£50m = $95m

Anyway the weekend decline was indeed 11%, meaning it's 5th frame = stronger than it's third.

Oh and this is just $90m away from topping SATC now.
$90m and with over 30 territories still to open in, with a good $20m at least still to come from the UK...I think it's a lock.

Im really happy for this movie.

It is only $14m away from being Universal's highest grossing film of all time in the UK. I think Universal will try make it happen. It would look great for them. The only other film that might make impact is Get Smart which comes out a week Friday. I think the thing that will help its a lack of competition. I could see £50m happening but it might a be a slow process getting there.

It made £7.06m last week and about £7.5 & £7.7 the previous two weeks. I think it's pace would have to fall off a cliff and it would have to shed a ton of theaters for it not to make £50. How soon before nearing the end of summer makes an impact on daily audiences and how big is the impact usually in th UK?

UPI had yesterday's international Mon # at $3.1m so it still looks to be holding steady

U.K. Aug 8-10

5th weekend: £2,803,272 (£39,168,064)

2nd weekend: £4,561,109 (£16,851,641)
1st weekend: £6,594,058 (w p/v)

20 STAR WARS: ATTACK OF THE CLONES 2002 37,545,260

The Current UK Top 10 all time adjusted for inflation
Continously updating this one..
Obviously tracking on the biggest films only began in the 70s.

(with non adjusted in brackets)

1. Star Wars £148.8m (£30.71m)

2. Titanic
£89.04m (£69.02m) -
3. Grease £77.04m (£18.93m)
4. Harry Potter 1 £76.77m (£66.09m) -
5. LOTR 1 £73.08m (£63.0m) -
6. LOTR 3 £67.2m (£60.8m) -
7. The Full Monty £67.10m (£52.23m) -
8. Jurassic Park £66.74m (£47.8m)
9. LOTR 2 £64.98m (£57.65m) -
10. Star Wars EP1 £61.7m (£51.0m) -

Mamma Mia is a lock for the £50m club, but can it join the $100m unadjusted club? it needs to top £53.95m to do that.

my prediction

1 TITANIC 1998 69,025,646
2 HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE 2001 66,096,060
3 LOTR: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING 2001 63,051,172
4 LOTR: THE RETURN OF THE KING 2003 61,062,348
5 LOTR: THE TWO TOWERS 2002 57,654,384
6 MAMMA MIA! 2008 56,000,000
7 CASINO ROYALE 2006 55,502,884
8 HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS 2002 54,780,731
9 THE FULL MONTY 1997 52,232,058
10 PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST 2006 51,735,498

$300m worldwide has been cracked. By the end of the weekend I expect it to be at $320m.

Quote:
Mamma Mia! became the first Universal release this year to cross $200m as $16.8m from 2,750 venues in 24 territories raised the tally to $204.6m. It currently ranks as the ninth biggest overseas release of 2008 and, ominously for its rivals, there are still 35 territories to go. The sole new launch was Spain, where the musical opened in second place on $2.7m from 404 sites. The running total in Spain including previews is $4.9m.

Mamma Mia! held firm at number one in its sixth weekend in the UK and dropped 25% for $4.1m from 536 to raise the tally to $89.2m, making it the biggest film of the year in the UK and 16th on the all-time roster. It fell 15% in the fifth weekend in Germany on $2.4m for $25m and ranks third. The musical added $1.3m from 286 in Australia after a 23% drop for third place on $24.5m and opens in Argentina and Taiwan next weekend.

:yummy:

I was thinking TDK might beat it in the UK but Mamma Mia this weekend was only 200k behind and Mamma Mia has already been out two weeks more. Also TDK is having much steeper drops.

It categorically cannot beat titanic or harry potter. I think best case it will slide in around #4th inside the Lord of the Rings bracket.

However, that will require immaculate holds over the next few weeks.

Oh and Australia and obviously Scandinavia are proving to be juggernaughts for the film too.
I just wonder how high it can go, $500m?

Actuals are now out for the UK. TDK is still number 1 but by only £94,384

Those kind of margins are rarely true when all comes down to it, having filed through hundreds of invoices (joy) last week at a distributor, the final actual recorded gross can differ up to the ten-thousands by the time all is said and done.

It should be a good weekend for Mamma Mia what with the Bank Holiday on Monday in England. Get Smart and Hellboy both have a Wednesday release dates so the weekend totals will be artificially higher. But Screen Daily report the 3 day actuals so will be able to see where it placed.

Get Smart's marketing hasn't been that strong in the Uk though, I don't know anyone who wants to see it. Mind you, Hellboys has been pretty strong and i still don't know anyone who would see that.

Glad The Strangers is getting alot of advertising, ads have been showing on channel 4 every night since Monday, two weeks before it opens.

Anyway back to topic, Mamma Mia is doing amazing in the Uk, and it deserves every single penny.

Why is it being re-released? It's still going strong in theatres.

Also, evidently, there are more gays in Britain than even I suspected

It's being re-released as a 'sing-a-long' version, i guess it could really encourage repeat business.
