 Poland Box Office
Well one more foreign box office thread but I was thinking a long time about making one so I think it's a good time to creat it.
All numbers in Admissions
For start TOP 20 movies after 1989 ( I will explain later why we track numbers before and after 1989 )
1. Ogniem i mieczem 7 150 000 adm. 2. Pan Tadeusz 6 170 000 adm 3. Quo vadis 4 300 000 adm 4. Titanic 3 510 000 adm 5. Passion of the Christ 3 450 000 adm 6. Shrek 2 3 390 000 adm 7. Shrek Third 3 352 469 adm 8, Jurassic Park 2 740 000 adm 9. Katyn 2 735 777 adm 10. Lion King 2 720 000 adm 11. LOTR: FOTR 2 530 000 adm 12. Harry Potter 1 2 520 000 adm 13. Lejdis 2 509 000 adm 14. W pustyni i w puszczy 2 230 000 adm 15. Kiler 2 200 000 adm 16. LOTR: ROTK 2 089 415 adm 17. Zemsta 1 980 000 adm 18. Ice Age 2: Meltdown 1 946 964 adm 19. Pope John Paul II 1 913 155 adm 20. Karol, un Papa rimasto uomo 1 878 124 adm
The list only for movies after year 1989 when Poland left communism and democracy started. Movies before 1989 had huge numbers which no movies after 1989 will never reach. It was caused by effect of free tickets. People received tickets for movies from their factories or other workplaces. It was made on huge scale which caused best movies to reach 36 milion admissions during time when there were 30 milion people living in Poland.

Guys, you should not forget your brilliant movie past, regardless of this freaking thing...how did you call it? Oh, yeah, democrazy. I demand the data prior to 1989. Give me Pan Klyaksa and Znakhor.

I cannot comment on the quality of the Polish titles as I don't know them and don't know if they deserve to be there, but Step Up and Urmel... Surprised however to see The Mist and El Orfanato in there. Is the horror genre big in Poland?

Re: Poland Box Office Thread ( July 11-13 ) Hancock vs Panda!
Step Up 2 was popular mostly with teenagers who watch popular TV show "You can dance".
As for Horrors I can tell you that they don't go over 200k admissions to often but many of them reach over 100k admissions. There is not big but loyal group of fans. Many horrors have more admissions then huge comics adaptations.
As for Polish movies quality: Lejdis - good, Nie kłam Kochanie - average, rest - crap.

Weekend TOP 10 ( July 25-27 ) 1 Wall-E....................................... 52 319 / 295 641 2 Kung Fu Panda.............................. 37 426 / 873 853 3 Hancock ........................................ 27 266 / 329 236 4 The X-Files 2: I want to believe ................ 19 932 / 19 932 5 Made of Honor.................................... 18 603 / 18 603 6 The Bank Job................................ 15 457 / 15 767 7 Get Smart........................................ 13 939 / 13 939 8 Jak żyć? ....................................... 9 963 / 57 876 9 Wanted................................................. 5 333 / 242 264 10 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull........ 2 843 / 896 503 Great, hot and sunny weather killed the box office last weekend. All movie fell from 50% to 70%. Wall-e is disappointing This movie has great WOM but was release at a bad time Kung Fu Panda - should easily pass 1 milion admissions but it will need some better drops get anything more than million. Hancock - Is doing really good. Should end up around 410k admissions. Biggest W.Smith movie in Poland since Men in Black II. Indy will end up around ROTS numbers which is a good number. Wanted is getting close to Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 numbers

There was a new version in 2001. BTW it's still the most expensive polish production. At the time it was made it cost around 20 milion $. Now that would be around 38 milion $. It needed at least 6 milion admissions to get back it's budget. It didn't make it

Re: Poland Box Office Thread ( July 25-27 ) Mummy 3 on top.
Mummy 3 had pretty impressive OW in Poland. I didn't expect it to make more than 70k adm. but it made 109 794 adm. It should end up making around 300k admissions in the end.

Re: Poland Box Office Thread - Mummy 3 on top.
The Dark Knight opening weekend numbers are 110 203 adm. With previews it has 126 681 admissions. Very good opening considering that it's only on 80 copies ( Avg no of copies for a big movie is around 100 copies )
Here is Top 20 OW for a comic book adaptation in Poland
1 300 - 174 626 2 Asterix at the Olympic Games - 138 949 3 The Dark Knight - 110 203 4 Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra - 97 694 5 Spider-Man 3 - 92 381 6 Men in Black 2 - 84 069 7 Spider-Man - 80 651 8 Constantine - 73 628 9 Spider-Man 2 - 72 848 10 Wanted - 58 627 11 Sin City - 52 653 12 Ghost Rider - 42 434 13 Batman Begins - 40 305 14 X-Men: The Last Stand - 33 847 15 Iron Man - 32 095 16 Road to Perdition - 29 220 17 X-Men 2 - 28 777 18 Hulk - 21 882 19 Superman Returns - 21 239 20 League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - 20 058
To make it clear: 300 and Asterix aren't considered as comic book adaptation in Poland by average viewers. Average person thought that 300 was a historic movie and Asterix is popular thanks to animated movies and not comics.

Re: Poland Box Office Thread - TDK on top :)
Epic "1612" easily becomes the highest grossing Russian picture in Poland ($0.455 m). Pretty impressive that they've even released it there - the subject matter is not an easy sell for the local audience as it deals with the Polish intervention and is highly pro-Russian. Anyways, the movie is pretty bad.

Kind of the same in western Europe, superheroes are very much a product of urban American mythology.
