Ahhh, I see Moriarity has seen the British Cult Film and Novel, "The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy" which has been made by Disney and after reading this review, I'm inclined to say this is going to BOMB hard for Disney unless your a big follower of this sort of thing and get into British Humor which I don't think the general moviegoer will understand, especially if this is supposed to be catered to teens...

You seem to take the opinion of Moriarity like the bible itself. He was the same guy who said that Day After Tommorrow will outgross the Passion and it hasnt happened yet. What does Moriarity know what makes a movie a hit or not unless you hook a cheese sandwich on a fishing pole to chase after

I wont give you a big grilling about Hitchhiker's Galaxy, Im sure either Baba or Dolcy will :wink:

I guess he's no more of an expert than anyone else in the Internet World I suppose that passes themselves off as a Professional Critic and his opinion is just about as good as any.. As for him predicting "Day after Tomorrow" would outgross The Passion?? Hey, everyone misses at box office at some point, probably more than you think including myself which I'm far from perfect in predicting box office.. But "The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy" is an acquired taste and unless you understand this goofy British Humor, I say it will not be very well embraced except for hardcore fans of this and BOMB hard for Disney.. Will see..

Harry Potter did well and I thought those films sucked. so we shall see how this does.

Harry Potter is a little easier to understand and is more of a Fantasy than Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy which falls into Quirky British Humor like Monty Python or Bean... You either get this sort of thing or you don't..

I am pretty sure he just overpredicted that movie because he wanted it to do that. It is kind of like me ... if I am going to be watching an Eagles game ... I can't bet against them even if I think they may lose. I have to bet FOR them and hope that they win, that way I can root for them. I think the same thing applies here ... BKB went with his heart on the movie, something alot of us here do.

As for him being wrong on this ... don't be so sure.

My feelings are this:

The movie will be good, but will end as a box office failure. I think it is going to end as a cult classic and have a humor that only a few can and thus will appreciate. I would not go as far as to predict this ... I have to see trailers, press, reviews, blah blah .... but to say that he is wrong just becasue ... simply wont cut it here.

Infact I think he may just be right.

Oh I will be right... Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy is acquired taste and you either get the British humor from it or you don't and the majority of moviegoers unfamiliar with this will not buy into this.. As for White Noise not making what I predicted?? It also opened up on less screens to, therefore, preventing it from opening up at 45 Million.. Lovemerox can rag on me all he likes about that, but the fact is is that 90% of the posters around here including critics and internet critic wannabe's predicted it to open much lower than what it made in it's opening weekend.. The movie was a success and a sequel now greenlit as a result.. =D>

Holy shit, I totally agree with BKB. I love the books, but I'm having an extremely hard time seeing this breaking out. I'd guess it does more of a Sky Captain-ish run as it's far too weird for most audiences and gets lost in the shuffle. Maybe 18/55 thanks to the summer, but I have a hard time seeing this doing well considering it has no big cast, VERY weird humor (c'mon guys, don't deny it) and a limited US fanbase.

I mean, it's like Monty Python or Mr.Bean or any other British type of humor.. You either get it or you don't and if this is coming out, what?? This Summer??? In a Summer filled with Super Blockbuster movies??? I'd say put a fork in it, it's Toast.....

Yeah, as of now it's opening against Kingdom of Heaven, the new huge epic from Ridley Scott, director of Gladiator. It's been playing the release date dance for awhile though, at this point I'm sure it won't get a weekend to itself.

Moriarty's review was positive right??? he seemed to love it.

Its release date. It's the first movie of the summer and i dont have high hopes for Kingdom of Heaven.

I am hearing Buzz on Kingdom of heaven everywhere I go.

It seems Ridley Scott has a pull along the lines of M. Night.

People expect great things from him after gladiator. I am beginng to think it will hit 150-200.

saw the trailer .. one of the least impressive ones i've seen. it has buzz .. i dont deny that .. but i foresee a run for it more along the lines of Troy. That in itself is good but it means we're not gonna see numbers we expect of May. This means Hitch has a chance to open well. 30 million for me will be satisfactory.

I'm not so sure. Mostly because British humor is the one thing we still do get. Monty Python anyone? PBS also plays British tv shows like mad, and I used to watch Are You Being Served and Red Dwarf and Absolutely Fabulous every day when I was young. MOst of thier tv series including Queer as Folk, etc, became so popular here they started AMerican spin-offs. AbFab went out for awhile and we clamored so loudly for more that they made a few more intallments.

I think we forget that compared to say, Serbian or Russian humor, he relate to Anglo humor (think how big Baz Luhrman and the Irish) more than any other type. That being said this is not a flat-out comedy, and the supposed sci-fi elements are, as usual, going to turn off alot of people. On the other hand I remember still living in PA (so I must have been around 6) and seeing the book on my dad's bedstand (not knowing what it was at the time). It definately will survive on cult following, but that's not a small cult following by any means. It will also completely depend on anglo countries on the international level.

I think it depends on how much hoopla is around it opening weekend. If its #1 and has a high per/screen average, it will pique people's curiosity and maybe some people who haven't read the book will become interested. If it has stable but not impressive opening, its going to depend on fanboys (and girls) along, and that will only go so far. Because of that its a pretty wide a prediction range. And of course, it has to be well done, if it ends up disappointing the fanbase than its as good as dead.

Big Opening = 200 million
Medium Opening = 115 Million


But then again, I know nothing about BO predicting, and just really want to see this movie.

I was worried about this. Too bad Douglas Adams isn't still alive; he kept a pretty strong control over every other form the Guide took, and the quality remained high.

Still, Moriarty's review says that it is pretty good but still in a rough form, and he seemed to imply that the things he noticed could still be fixed by release date... so I am still optomistic.

Hey, when I met Harry Knowles last week we talked a lot about animation (because of my background with Animato magazine) and his little cartoon movies he has, and this week he put up a Mickey Mouse bit -- I wonder if he did that for me? :wink:

Mike, even though he hasn't been a part of the production, Adams is responsible for most of the script for this movie. And really, i dont see what the problem is. Moriarty's column says the movie is good.

yea ... i still think the movie at the end of the day will cater to its fans and will become a cult hit on dvd. whats the budget for it? i hope it gets a 100m theatrically.
