Re: The MAMMA MIA! tracking thread.
First week musical record now broken too.
It was reported earlier this week that international cume going into third weekend was just shy of $100m, meaning the movie will likely be pushing $200m globally by the end of the frame.
Sex and the City's $372,000,000 is a bit off yet, but certainly isnt looking that distant at this rate. It should meet it's foreign $221,000,000 total, at least.
This summer has been a revolution for female-cinema that it most desperately needed. Between SEX AND THE CITY and MAMMA MIA! a small shift in power has occurred where women are now going to be granted a bigger voice in audience demand than they had before. Breaking those first week records was important, and the thing is with other romantic comedies that had set precedent, they did have much more male appeal.
It was generally agreed that movies which skewed too female were a disaster ground at the box office before this year, but then two movies in a row happened to show different. And not only did they show different - but they are respectively just outside of the top 100 of all time (or will be) worldwide and even with the more male skewing female movies, they are going to rank around #4th and #5th of all time in the female orientated worldwide list.
MAMMA MIA should, at this rank #2 in all time musicals behind GREASE when all is said and done. Of course, SOUND OF MUSIC does some major pwning adjusted, but still.

Mamma Mia is doing AMAZING!
Both Sex and the City and Mamma Mia are great performances! Studio will be more willing now to produce more female oriented films. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing.

Im excited about what this summer means for the future of female skewing film, because i believe women should have a chance to enjoy cinema tailored to them just as men do. Also, i have a penchant for chick flicks, incase no one picked that one up.

Well, I think that at this point $105 million in the US is guaranteed and it will likely make more than that. A somewhat realistic projection would put it at $110-120 million with a slight chance at more.
Worldwide, well, it's huge, however the good weather is hurting it in Germany. I still see around $340-360 million WW.

Mamma Mia has certainly become a phenom in the UK. I mean, this is getting major repeat viewings, excellent buzz and a lot of goodwill. I expect it to top $65m here.

Why is BOM so awful with international figures right now? it seems like is biased and thrown all of its resources towards the 949 million ways to analyse the dark knight

Re: The MAMMA MIA! tracking thread. ($185.5M ww)
Domestically, MM! has seperated what was initially lagging hairspray by $1m into a near $5m lead, and has also turned around from significantly lagging The Devil Wears Prada into a narrow lead.
SATC - $151M TDWP - $124M HAIRSPRAY - $119M
If MAMMA MIA! continues to perf on this tangent we could see $135M on a nice day. International grosses are likely to be in the mid $200m range id say.
TDWP - $210M SATC -$221M HAIRSPRAY - $81.7M
It's already just a weekend away from eclipsing HAIRSPRAY'S $200m worldwide cume, wether it can topple TDWP's $326m OR SATC's $372m remains to be seen, both are pretty much in the top echelon for female skewing films.

But yeah, the Intl. Section is totally falling apart at the moment.

Does ADAM have any UK updates? He seems to have access to numbers that I don't.

Re: The MAMMA MIA! tracking thread. ($202.15M ww)
I just use Variety.com and Screendaily.com, Both there international previews didn't have much about Mamma Mia this week.
It should hang around the Top 10 for a while. TDK was the last movie that is going to have an impact. I'm pleased it has managed to outgross SATC and Hancock despite them both having an higher opening weekend. Once we get the new UK total tomorrow, that will give us the biggest indication as to where it will end up.
From about mid August we will have quite a few batches of international openings weekly. At the moment we are just living off holdovers.

Re: The MAMMA MIA! tracking thread. ($202.15M ww)
Quote: At No. 4 is Universal's "Mamma Mia!" which boosted its international total to $140.7 million thanks to a $14.6 million weekend at 2,310 screens in 22 markets, down just 10% from the previous stanza. The musical's worldwide tally is $228.7 million. Its best market was the U.K., where "Mamma Mia!" ranked second and drew $6.1 million from 495 sites for a 24-day market total of $63.8 million. I can't believe how strong it is in the UK. Even after all these weeks.

Yeah i had a look at the figures today and it's increased 11% in the UK this weekend to a total of £32.something million. It's well ahead of The Dark Knight and is actually made half of what TDK did in the UK this weekend, which is huge considering TDK opened to $22m last week

Total: $229,999,338 Thanks, that international figure differs from the Variety one though, where'd you find it?
