Welcome Berg. Is Bergman where your screen-name comes from?
I've only seen Seventh Seal, which is one of my favorites. I keep wanting to watch Fannie and Alexander, as well, and I hope I'll get around to it this summer.

Re: Rank GOD a.k.a. Ingmar Bergman
I have only seen Persona It was definitely good! I really need to make a point to see more of his movies. Especially Fannie & Alexander. Maybe a future Indie Film Club movie?

Re: Rank GOD a.k.a. Ingmar Bergman
Thanks for the welcome. It is a good thing that you started with a Bergman masterpiece. It would have been traumatic to start Bergman's oeuvre with something like The Serpent's Egg. The Seventh Seal is Bergman's most iconic film. I mean, Death plays chess. Persona is his most intimate. But Cries and Whispers is still my all-time favorite.

01 The Seventh Seal 02 Hour of the Wolf 03 Persona 04 Fanny and Alexander 05 Wild Strawberries 06 Cries and Whispers
All but #6 would go into that "masterpiece" category for me.

Re: Rank GOD a.k.a. Ingmar Bergman
1. Fanny and Alexander 2. Smiles of a Summer Night 3. Cries and Whispers 4. The Seventh Seal 5. Wild Strawberries
6. Persona (which I don't like terribly much. At all. Maybe one day I will see it as something other than impenetrable silliness.)

Re: Rank GOD a.k.a. Ingmar Bergman
I've decided Smiles of a Summer Night will be in my next Criterion B1G1 order. Just gotta pick another 24 dollar one to go along with it.

Re: Rank GOD a.k.a. Ingmar Bergman
I wish my school offered classes on Bergman. I know someone else in Canada (who might have gone to the same school as you, actually, as she was in Edmonton too) who took classes on like, Kurosawa and Gangster films and stuff. Awesome.

Yep, the U of Alberta does a gangster film class that it's known for, as well as classes on specific directors. It's pretty great. Where do you go?

Where do you go? UCF. Central Florida. It's pretty lame. (I actually like the school quite a bit. It's fun. But there's definitely no gangster film classes haha.: ( )

Re: Rank GOD a.k.a. Ingmar Bergman
I was watching The Seventh Seal last night (for the first time, and only my second Bergman) and I couldn't help but thinking how pitiful our bickering in the awards forum is. Those films are just nothing compared to stuff like this.

Re: Rank GOD a.k.a. Ingmar Bergman
cries and whispers had a literally numbing/hypnotic effect on me that no film or any art for that matter has ever had on me before. fuck this bergman guy...he's destroying my favorite movies list.
I need it again asap though...it really might be one of the greatest things I've ever seen.
