At yesterday's gathering of world leaders in southern Poland to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the United States was represented by Vice President Cheney. The ceremony at the Nazi death camp was outdoors, so those in attendance, such as French President Jacques Chirac and Russian President Vladimir Putin, were wearing dark, formal overcoats and dress shoes or boots. Because it was cold and snowing, they were also wearing gentlemen's hats. In short, they were dressed for the inclement weather as well as the sobriety and dignity of the event.

The vice president, however, was dressed in the kind of attire one typically wears to operate a snow blower.

Does anyone else find that it is just beyond ridiculous for anyone, let alone a paper of WP's stature, to be concerned with what Dick Cheney is wearing at the Auschwitz memorial? Of course, I could reduce myself to making a cheap shot at Vladimir Putin and Jacques Chirac and their respective countries' notorious antisemitic attitudes, but that would be low. Or would it?

I also think it's fair to report. Cheney is representing the US, and his attire looks like he just doesn't care. As the article suggests, he looks like he just walked out his door to shovel snow.

As a matter of taste you should dress appropriately when your representing your country at an event like that, and Cheney should know better. I can't believe he thought that would be ok.

And so I've heard that one of the immediate responses to the surrender of some of the guards was to shoot them point blank. So the desire to murder had crossed all boundaries then. I've known this, only, I didn't know it was so abrupt. I don't think I can get myself to the point of blaming them. I mean, technically it is murder, but the circumstances are extraordinary. And by extraordinary, I mean that, having suffered extraordinary fates, the response would be to reply with extra-ordinary (literally, extra-ordinary, as I doubt those people would try to kill others in normal circumstances) acts of trespassing.

This is extremely interesting and disturbing. Interesting because it gives an in sight into the immediate after-math of the Holocaust, and disturbing because it's proof of the de-humanizing effect of the event; if people respond to murder with murder, the level of trauma and apathy must be extremely high.

I agree. Although it's far from a big deal (and probably shouldn't be headline news like it is), Cheney did make an error in judgement here.

well, i'm a sick freak, so i actually like being in a funeral home. i love the smell of formaldahyde in the morning, it smells like....death.
